24.01.2022 Making connections in the brain helps it to grow and stretch making us think and process information better and faster. Make connection through real life, interesting, fun, novel, child lead learning experiences.

23.01.2022 Oldie but a goodie....and good reason why we speech pathologists spend so much time working on non verbal language.

22.01.2022 The little fella I am working with on telehealth can't concentrate when I screen share things like pictures as it also means he can't see me as well to get the visual cues. So I needed real pictures with 3 bilabial sounds in them. Thanks to Google images I could trace these onto paper right off my phone. Easy #telehealth #telespeech #realpictures #bilabialsounds

21.01.2022 Visuals can be so very useful. But making them can be a pain. Computers, printers, laminators etc... And then not having the right picture or the cards or the sheet with you when you need it or needing to change it around. TIP: Keep a notebook and pencil with you and you can simply make your visuals to help support someone to understand what is happening any time any where. This can reduce anxiety, frustration, confusion, and meltdowns. You can draw whatever you need. They don't need to be fancy, just clear and effective.

20.01.2022 Really love this one.

15.01.2022 So, i went to a social thinking workshop last week and it was fantasic. Would recommend it! I then went to my niece's 9th birthday party and was watching her with all her friends interacting. Wow! The social interactions, subtle cues, and social thinking that I saw from these 8-9 year olds blew my mind. No wonder the kids i see, with difficulties in social skills, are struggling so much. I also really see how the old way of teaching rote learnt social rules couldn't possibly give them even the tiniest littlest bit of the complex social thinking skills they need in order to navigate the social hidden rules of their peers. But i do get how teaching them to learn to think with their eyes is a vital skill to start their social journey as they learn to watch for the hidden social rules and understand their peers. The eyes have it.

15.01.2022 I have been using chalk a lot lately to draw all sorts of therapy fun on the floor to promote #language #play #movement #sensoryregulation and #speech. Crawling around on the floor is so great for strength, coordination, and sensory regulation which in turn helps kids to focus, have fun and learn. We used language to discuss the road and the things along the road. We learnt sequencing concepts, first and second, and practiced /h/ at the start of words, eg home, house. The chalk wears, vacuum, or rubs off for a different concept next time. #getcreative #therapyoutsidethebox #chalk #slp #speechtherapy #playtherapy #learnthroughplay #play #speechpathology

14.01.2022 Verbs are very important in early sentence building in fact children with delayed or disordered language skills often need more help understanding and using action words. So get moving with language and work on the language around the actions.

14.01.2022 My husband sent me this picture of blowing bubbles with straws on the kitchen table he did with my girls today while I was at work. My girls LOVED this activity and I think I might have to add it to my oral motor and blowing activities toolkit. They added glycerin to the dishwashing detergent and water for stronger bubbles.

14.01.2022 As a speech pathologist my greatest privilege and favourite moments in my career have been giving someone a 'voice'.

10.01.2022 Picky eating is a problem for many and the link below has some good information. "Parents decide the what, when, and where and the kids decide the how much." "Experimental foods are paired with familiar foods" "everyone learns that sometimes you get your favourite" and the six words? "You don't have to eat it." It is a good read. In my house we add that everyone needs to remain at the table until the meal is done (this is our biggest talk time) and we chat even if they do...nt want to eat what is served. I often find they will pick at the food and end up eating more just because we are chatting and it is there. Another thing we do at our place is to have the kids involved in the cooking, shopping, menu planning, and setting table (or laying out the picnic rug). I also try to offer the really healthy foods when they are hungriest, which is usually in the afternoon. I should of course add that sometimes picky eating is caused by sensory and/or oral motor disorders so if you think there is a problem other than just being picky. Make sure you have an assessment by a speech pathologist and/or occupational therapist with paediatric feeding experience.

09.01.2022 Very hard part of my job is having to watch as kids miss out on funding and support because they got a few too many questions right on a test, because they didn't get a diagnosis of autism or because they don't quite behave badly enough. Despite the fact that they are so much in need of some support.

08.01.2022 Loving this @halliebulkin Thankyou. I have been spending time on jaw/lip/tongue isolation for speech for years.... Now for new applications. Exciting! Also exciting that I can combine my Bowen Therapy skills and speech, and continue to help my own daughter to improve her swallowing (gags and chokes more frequently than normal and has history of delayed speech) ... #iamworththetime #professionaldevelopment #paediatricfeeding #feedthepeds #dysphagia #speech #newlove

08.01.2022 Visual supports can help with understanding, memory, attention, behaviour, social skills, anxiety and much more. Keep watching this space or contact me for more info... about my upcoming mini elearning workshop- Visuals: visual schedules and beyond. I am in the progress of creating this workshop to help people understand what visuals can be used for, how to identify where and when they can be used and even to make some visuals for the home and classroom. #visuals #visualsupports #speechtherapy #elearning #onlineworkshop #ecis #therapy #SLP.

04.01.2022 Communication is mostly made of the non-verbal, such as facial expressions, tone of voice, and body language etc. This is where most of our message is. The words we say are really such a small part, only 7%! For eg: the words 'she is'. Say these aloud differently. 'she is?' 'she is!' 'SHE is!' ... 'she IS' The words are the same. The message (carried in face, body and tone) is not! So even if your child, student, friend, client, or patient is not using words or only using sounds they will be communicating in different ways. Facial expressions, behaviours, body language. This is still communication and in the absence of words, it may be all they have. So take notice, look and watch, then respond and communicate back. #communication #nonverbal #itsnotinthewords #slp #teachers #asd #speech #talkingwithouttalking

03.01.2022 So i was doing a bit of speech therapy with my youngest at bed tonight, she is 4 and we have been working on her 'k' and 'g' sounds. Usually i will work it into everyday activities so she is practicing even when she doesnt really want to..but tonight all she wanted was to go through her 'reader' - i made her a folder of words and letters and numbers a while back because she wants to be like her big sisters and have a 'reader'- and she loves it when i tick off the word as s...he says it. She was so excited tonight when she got ticks everytime that she said the word (i am talking jumping in her bed excited) that she just kept going and going and did two pages of words, each word about 10 times each. Lol. If only therapy was that easy every day. But seriously this article has some good tips for those parents who have kids in speech therapy.

02.01.2022 Some days we need to remember this. #humpday #keepongoing #dontgiveup #youcandoit
