24.01.2022 Hello Gardeners! Better late then never, a little update from the weekend! Liz showed us some amazing golden passion fruit the kids had found creeping over the fence from a neighbour. Craig took us for a toddle through the lovely Adem’s Orchard where the citrus trees are doing their thang. And we built some trellises for the new Madagascan Beans in the science block gardens and laid some mulch. ... We’d love to know, what is your families go-to for fresh fruit and veg? What do your kids love? A fresh picked lettuce? Or perhaps sneaking peas straight from the bush? Or plucking a perfect red cherry tomato floats your boat. Let us know below!

17.01.2022 And now for the prep garden! This little lot of gardens is absolutely flourishing! The potatoes are looking so healthy, we are excited to learn more about the signs to look for to know when they are ready. ... The herbs seem to have found their feet and are producing well and there are flowers on the nasturtiums here! Be sure to check out the photos, there are red, yellow and orange nasturtiums flowering, it will make for a lovely display over the coming weeks. There is also a mystery gardener who has planted peas of some sort and built some beautiful trellis’s from sticks and string - we don’t know who you are but thank you, they look wonderful and we hope you will see some peas soon!

14.01.2022 BAG BUG ALERT Are your newly planted winter leafy greens looking great one day and like chook food the next? The problem might be Cluster caterpillars which are... a difficult pest to control as they attack such a wide range of plants. The first sign will be a white, fluffy egg mass with a horde of young caterpillars emerging a few days later. Best response is acting quickly to remove the infested leaves and feed them to the chooks. No chooks? then just drop the leaves into a bucket of very hot water. 12.01.2022 Garden update... Lovely morning checking out the gardens and giving them a water and some TLC. My efforts are amateur greenthumb but I feel super zen when pottering around pulling weeds and digging in the dirt. The science lab garden is home to an amazing Thai basil which has gone to seed and is a sea of purple. The rosemary is always a standout, much nicer than mine at home. There are a heap of wild bean plants of some sort growing.. The little garden near year 1 classroom...s has a lovely tomato bush growing and a heap of marigolds have sprouted. Hopefully it will be all yellow and orange flowers in a couple of months. The prep gardens have snowpeas, mint, parsley and tomatoes growing. I have thrown some coriander, lettuce and marigold seeds in.. fingers crossed with a good water (check out the new sprinkler) and some worm juice, we will see them sprouting soon. I have added a pic of the citrus in the prep garden which has never had any fruit on it.. if anyone knows about citrus trees and wants to take on a project, please adopt this poor tree! PS. Have you all seen the golden passionfruit vine in the year 2/3 playground.. love it! And so do the kids when they get lucky enough to grab one of the ground. They are delicious.

05.01.2022 Check out the difference between these two swarm clusters. One is ready to move on, and the other has just settled. If we find a swarm acting like the first e...xample, it is a sure sign that it is on the verge of taking off to a location determined by their scout bees who have been out searching for a cavity suitable for their new nest. You can literally see the anticipation of the bees as they excitedly dance around on the outside of the swarm cluster; departure imminent. The second example is of a recently settled swarm, and we would normally expect a cluster like this to hang around for a while, waiting for the democratic process of finding a new home takes place. 03.01.2022 Hello Gardeners, Just popping in with a little garden update from yesterday. We headed up to do some watering at the science block and found our spring onions had been munched! The tubes were full of caterpillars and their charming waste! We gave them a trim, sent the caterpillars to a better place and have our fingers crossed for a full recovery. ... The marigolds are fully in bloom and look beautiful with their bright orange flower heads bobbing in the breeze. The nasturtiums are starting to come into their own and are producing some of the biggest leaves I’ve ever seen from them. The lemon verbena experiment was a bust. I’m going to try sticking a stalk into a jar of water and seeing if we can get some roots that way - I’ll keep you posted! No signs yet of any pea shoots. The seeds were a bit old so we’ll give them another week and see what happens. Finally, you may recall Craig Bycroft installed our very cool new water tank last year. It’s been going great guns but unfortunately the spout has become brittle in the sun and has shattered. I’ve popped a photo below, if there is someone who could help us replace that it would be appreciated - thank you! Check out the next post for a prep garden update!
