20.01.2022 The art of live music has taken a hit of late, but people are still making music, it's who they are and what they do. But there is one kind of performance which is impossible to get even close to matching the feeling of on one’s own, and that’s the performance of a big band, concert band or orchestra etc. There are hundreds of community bands of this nature around the country, thousands and thousands around the world. Community bands go beyond the performance, a performance t...hat is something special where the room is entirely filled with instruments alone, no amplification necessary on all but one or two instruments. Community bands are a community in and of themselves. They bring together a unique cross section of their wider community, all with one common interest, making music the way only a big band can. None of these bands were able to practice for several months, in some cases they still can not. They have all kept in touch with each other, kept sharing their love of the genre they collectively enjoy, and kept their friendships and fellowship strong. Community bands shape shy young musicians in to confident, proud, keen contributors to the world. They have continued to provide a sense of belonging and camaraderie amongst their members despite having not played together, in some cases, for several months. They are keen to get back to life as normal, when they can entertain their friends, family, and communities with their unique brand of live performance. One band that has been able to commence rehearsals in the last few weeks is the more than 160 year old Gawler Town Band. The 30+ piece band have found a venue able to accommodate them while rehearsing socially distant, and they were able to work up a small set with this online broadcast, the first in the band’s long history, in mind. It has been my very great pleasure to help the Gawler Town Band bring this idea of a live online performance together, and they have just released the video from that night to Facebook I hope you can find some time to watch, too see what the band is all about. A mix of youth and experience, with so many great supporters and members. And if you have the resources, support them by following them, sharing their performance, or make a small donation via the link on their Live page (link in comments). Or all three, every bit counts.
