23.01.2022 Not only canvas art ......

22.01.2022 WONDERFUL WILDFLOWERS There are carpets of colour on show in the heart of Western Australia's wildflower country as these gorgeous photos by Shelley Tonkin ...from Wheresshelly show. Shelley said she thinks Coalseam Conservation Park will be hitting its peak bloom this weekend and put together this "wildflower report" on Monday which she has generously shared with us. Thank you Shelley! "If you or friends are heading north over the next few weeks be sure to have a read of where to find the best wildflower spots!," she said. COALSEAM CONSERVATION PARK Lots of pink, yellow and cream everlastings and cream and yellow pom-pom heads out at the moment, especially along Miners Rest Camp Road and up near Breakaway (smaller patches near the Canola fields). Plateau Loop hike has lots of yellow everlastings & pom-pom heads up the top. Road into Coalseam has mainly yellow and cream pom-poms with patches of pink. The pinks will probably last another week before they start fading. Yellows will be around for a few more weeks. Coalseam will be at its peak for the next week if you like pinks. DEPOT HILL Lots of orchids out at the moment, particularly the yellow cowslips. Also saw spider orchids, donkey orchids, snail orchids, purple tassels, purple fringe lilies, egg & bacon shrubs, red & yellow cat's paws, pink and cream sholtzias, leschenaultias and lots of pink everlastings out the front. Look out for the arrows drawn in the sand, it means there's an interesting flower to see. The orchids may not last much longer with hot weather expected later in the week. PINDAR 10kms north of Pindar you'll find the wreath flowers. When you get to the fork in the road where the parking lane sign is, go right. The sign points left but most of the wreath flowers are on the right side. At the moment there are only a few flowers out with no complete wreaths. Give it another week. Nice everlastings in the bush on the way out. The Pindar Hotel is also worth a stop for tea and scones. MULLEWA Lots of cream and yellow everlastings in fields on the outskirts of town. Head to Lovers Lane near the Caravan park for fields of pink, yellows and creams. MINGENEW-MULLEWA ROAD Huge swathes of dense cream pom-pom heads along side the road between Coalseam and Mullewa. Turn off onto the road down to the Butterabby Graves for more dense cream pom-poms on the left hand side. More scattered down near the graves. YUNA LOOP Lots of cream and yellow pom-poms with pockets of pink everlastings. MINGENEW Showground Road has lots of pink everlastings, pink tape indicates some smaller orchids to see. Everlastings planted along the train line across from the bakery (always worth a stop!). YANDANOOKA Pink everlastings under the trees around Yandanooka South Road and Yandanooka Hall. Shelley Tonkin / Wheresshelly.

21.01.2022 Are you keen for a dive, have the experience to tackle it, and want to visit some of the maritime history that the Turquoise Coast has to offer? Two 18th centur...y shipwrecks off the Jurien Bay coastline have an interconnected history. The British-built 3 masted barque the Europa was wrecked on Three Breaks Reef, nearly 13 kilometres south of where the Jurien Bay marina now is and six kilometres directly west of the Hill River mouth. The 756 ton barque hit the reef during the morning of the 10th January 1897 and quickly filled with water. While the Captain sought help, the crew of the Europa set up a camp on an adjacent beach. The crew were under orders to watch over the wreck to prevent any other ships claiming salvage or unloading the cargo. The barque was carrying a general cargo which included large quantities of alcohol destined for the Swan River colony. A few days later the coastal trader, the steamship SS Lubra, found the wreck seemingly unattended and began unloading the cargo, the crew of the Europa were reportedly still on the beach busy indulging in the alcohol taken from the hold. The crew of the Lubra found the camped crew who then assisted them to salvage as much alcohol and other cargo as possible and all proceeded to Fremantle. Almost a year later, the Lubra was returning to Fremantle from Geraldton when it struck a reef south of Dongara. Temporary repairs were made but due to continuing rough seas the Lubra eventually sank off Island Point. Today the wreck lies due west of Jurien Bay between Favourite and Osprey islands in only 4 fathoms of water. On a calm day the boiler of the Lubra can be seen above the water line. Only a few kilometres apart, both the Lubra and the Europa have their final resting place. For those with a sense of history and adventure both wrecks are fantastic dive sites when swells are less than one metre. After a century of wave energy, the remaining cargo of bottles and china have been smashed into thousands of pieces littering the seafloor and like most wrecks, the site is fully protected from interference by the Historic Shipwrecks Act 1976. If you take up the challenge, we would love to hear from you and check out your up to date photos of the wreck sites.

20.01.2022 Get on your bike! If you are coming to Jurien Bay for the long weekend or the school holidays at the end of September, don`t forget to pack your walking shoes a...nd the kids bikes. The Turquoise Way path is a sealed, bike/walk/running track that follows the Jurien Bay Marine park from the marina in town, to the mouth of the Hill river between Cervantes and Jurien. Bike hire is available in Jurien Bay. I can`t think of a better way to visit the shoreline of the Marine park or how to find a secluded beach all to yourself and stay the day. Take your backpack with some snorkelling gear, load the kids backpacks with a picnic lunch or go flat out to finish the 14-kilometre ride and cool down with a quick dip before returning along the same path. If you are lucky, an Echidna might cross your path, perhaps a wandering Sea Lion might pop his nose up in the shallows or a few Emu`s could wander in for a day at the beach. See more

18.01.2022 Are we there yet? Have the kids been in the car for a while and starting to get fidgety, squirming in their seats and annoying the other kids? Are those sugary... snacks starting to peak their energy levels with your stress level heading in the same direction? The answer to solving this age-old parental travel dilemma might be in the numerous playgrounds in Jurien Bay, Cervantes, Badgingarra and Dandaragan. Take the time to stop at one of the many playgrounds in the region and get the kids out of the car to run, climb, swing and slide. In Cervantes, check out the small skate area, shark playground at the Recreation Centre reserve, or the foreshore playground at Catalonia Park. In Jurien Bay there is Pirate Park in Bettong Ave, the foreshore playground near the Jurien Bay jetty, small skatepark and playground on Hastings Street, and take the bmx bikes down to Seinor Park and have a go at the free form bmx track on Meelup Drive. If you're heading inland, Badgingarra have a beautiful nature playground near the tennis courts and the Dandaragan playground is at Pioneer park. It might add a little time to your journey if you are travelling through the region to stop at one of these playgrounds but think of those happy kids and the good start to your holiday. Please note that ablutions are only available at both foreshore parks, and the playgrounds in Badgingarra and Dandaragan. 09.01.2022 Where can I snorkel along the Turquoise Coast? If you are travelling by road There are too many places to list here but there are a few special spots that are ...easy to get to, shallow enough for inexperienced snorkelers, and full of interesting critters, crawlies, and underwater reef to explore. Try the point at Sandy Cape or one of the many places along the track to North Head. Point Louise lookout near Green Head is little bit more adventurous, with deep dark reef holes to explore. For small fry and ankle biters, the shallows around Milligan’s island north of Green Head are just perfect. Dynamite Bay right in town at Green Head caters for all ages and skills. Try Hangover Bay south of Cervantes or simply do your own searching and find a secluded spot with close to shore reef. If you are skimming the water by boat You will be like a kid in a lolly shop out of Jurien Bay, Cervantes, Green Head or Leeman There are shipwrecks to explore, shallow reef systems all over the place and crayfish waiting to be wrestled from their hidey holes. Pack your fins and goggles or hire in town to see what the Turquoise coast looks like underwater. See more

09.01.2022 Try something different - Stretch, Breathe and Experience Freedom. Did you know that there are school holiday Yoga classes in Cervantes for this school holida...ys? Available for beginners, classes for kids, parents and general classes. Yoga is a popular holiday activity for families as a chance to unwind, get rejuvenated, stretch out and not least, participate in a meaningful, shared activity that everyone can do together and talk about later. Bookings are essential due to limited numbers. Get in quick to try something new and different to everyday school holiday activities and also something that you can join in with the kids at the same time (or duck off for a sneaky coffee whilst the kids are busy). Contact the Pinnacles Visitor centre for details 9652 7700. Or if you're in Jurien Bay, there are some great pilates classes for the grown-ups for a bit of a stretch and quiet time. Contact the Turquoise Coast Visitor Centre for the details 9652 0800.

02.01.2022 If you are staying in Jurien Bay or Cervantes you need to put Lesueur National Park on your ‘bucket list’. We are so lucky to have such a pristine and diverse ...biological ‘hotspot’ so close to town. In the wildflower season (just starting now) it is stunning. There are drive and walk trails for all levels of fitness and information boards to guide you through the diversity of the park. To access this National Park from Jurien Bay- turn east off Indian Ocean Drive at Jurien East Road and travel for approximately 12 kms. Take a left turn onto Cockleshell Gully Road (well-formed gravel road) and continue for approximately 8 Kms. You will see a signposted sealed road to the right. This is an 18km, one-way, circular loop that winds through the park. Picnic shelters and toilet facilities are available throughout. Lesueur National Park covers about 26,987 hectares. It is extremely rich in flora and fauna, with over 900 species (about 10% of the state’s known species) of plants, 50+ species of reptiles (the highest lizard diversity of any of the worlds Mediterranean climate ecosystems), and 120+ species of birds. The woodlands of Lesueur have also been identified as one of the last remaining breeding habitats of Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo. Mount Lesueur was first sighted and named by Europeans as the French ship the Naturaliste (and her sister ship the Geographe) sailed past Jurien Bay on its voyage up the Western Australian coast in 1801. It was named in honour of Charles Alexander Lesueur, a natural history artist on board the ship. A reserve was created around Mount Lesueur for "educational purposes" in the 1950s. A more extensive area was gazetted as a national park in 1992. The park is open all year and accessible 24 hours for those who enjoy sunsets, cool afternoons and low light photography. Park fees apply. Call into the Turquoise Coast Visitor Centre for maps and further information. https://www.visitturquoisecoast.com.au/ Ship image is of the Naturaliste and her sister ship the Geographe. Portrait is Charles Lesueur.
