20.01.2022 In partnership with NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, NSW Rural Fire Service, The University of Melbourne and Macquarie University, we are offering a 3-year PhD scholarship for someone with an Honours or Master's degree in plant, forest or environmental science. Her research has produced the Australian Flammability Monitoring System that is helping fire managers with their prescribed burning strategies and resource allocation by providing a clear picture of immediate fire risks. 16.01.2022 Thirteen years ago, Cyclone Larry caused $1.5 billion in damages in north Queensland. You might remember the effect Larry had on Australia's banana supply, destroying more than 80% of crops. CRC research with Geoscience Australia, JCU: James Cook University, Australia and the JCU Cyclone Testing Station has been using the data gathered during cyclones such as Cyclone Larry to improve resilience against extreme winds in north Queensland: bit.ly/3qYisK3 A key product of this research is the recently launched Weather the Storm website: weatherthestorm.com.au/ - helping builders and homeowners strengthen the key connections of their homes against cyclones and storms.

15.01.2022 Driving through floodwater is life-threatening, even if you know the road well, so why do people do it? CRC researcher Andrew Gissing (Risk Frontiers) and others from Macquarie University found that most of the 178 flood-related deaths in Australia since 2000 have been the result of driver driving into floodwater. Check out Andrew's article below about the reasons people decide to enter floodwaters in their cars, and why this is so dangerous.... "If it's flooded, forget it."

04.01.2022 We welcome today’s announcement from the Australian Government to continue funding #naturalhazards research in Australia by investing $88.1 million over the next 10 years. According to the Government the funding will support the transition of the current Bushfire and Natural Hazards Cooperative Research Centre to a new, world-class research centre for natural hazard resilience and disaster risk reduction.
