25.01.2022 More allied opportunities.

25.01.2022 Recent dung beetle monitoring reveals cattle are becoming 'squirty', especially in capeweed dominant paddocks. Biochar provides fibre to assist digestion - in multiple ways researchers at UWA and CSIRO will detail.

24.01.2022 The$10m available nationally for the dairy industry to reduce energy costs is probably too small to enable a switch to a biomass source however it may cover the cost of a feasibility study or subsidise action. The objective of this grant opportunity is to support Australian dairy farming businesses to save energy through: *replace existing equipment with higher efficiency equipment... *install or replace a component/s to help an existing system run more efficiently *carry out on-farm energy audits *carry out monitoring of energy usage and emissions There is an estimated $10 million available for this grant opportunity

24.01.2022 Biochar plays a large role in natural farming.

24.01.2022 https://www.news.iastate.edu//2/06/17/biochar-slowrelease South west soils have a history of locked up P. Biochar to the rescue!

24.01.2022 Interesting study! Dung beetles' manure burial is known to increase earthworm activity - this study showing biochar and earthworms having a synergistic effect in stimulating clover growth confirms paddock observations.

22.01.2022 Applying Biochar into the soil is now counting as one of the new method for carbon sequestration in the flamework of J-CREDIT, in Japan. We will promote it, then just wish to be some help for mitigation of global warming though the activities. It s really exciting!

22.01.2022 You may have heard Richard Walker, Crissy Sharp and others on ABC Rural discussing the need for ecological thinning to protect the health of forests - especially those with a high number of young trees (regrowth forests) in areas of significant rainfall reduction. Caring for our forests has a cost which has been a barrier to take necessary action. Biochar and co-products, as part of an integrated production process will help defray those costs. [This article also refers to biochar as a fertiliser - raw biochar is not a fertiliser, its unique properties are what improve crop production.]

22.01.2022 Controlled burning turns waste tree litter and wood into carbon capturing biochar that great for use on agricultural land. See front page of this week's (June 1...1) edition. June 11 Weekender Herald out now. Pick up a hard copy in the Adelaide Hills and surrounding regions at your local supermarket (Coles, Woolworths, Foodland) or local PO or visit our online edition. See our new look online edition. It's at a new address so make sure you use this link. https://adelaidehillsweekenderherald.partica.online Adelaide Hills Biochar

21.01.2022 I'm putting a call out to artists, writers, and poets to submit a little something on the topic of biochar to a new underground publication called "A Cool Black Earth". This zine, short for DIY magazine, will be copied and distributed freely, with anti-copyright for all to be able to learn about biochar via non-academic channels. Longer essays will be linked to an online version at the Wind River Project (http://windriverproject.com) with author attribution. A resource directory will be included. Email submissions to [email protected]. Deadline is August 15th, 2020.

19.01.2022 After many hours of blood, sweat and tears (?) - it's coming together.

19.01.2022 Is your operation capable of pyrolysising paper and cardboard? From memory it has increased liming potential - will have to dig out references - or add them in the comments if you know some.

18.01.2022 Who is producing commercial quantities of biochar in WA? Not only is the demand beginning to outstrip known supply, but queries are coming from a wide geographic area and freight becomes a deciding factor.

18.01.2022 Happy to promote WA producers on this site.

18.01.2022 Biochar is one of the most affordable negative emission technologies (NET) at hand for future large-scale deployment of carbon dioxide removal (CDR), which is typically found essential to stabilizing global temperature rise at relatively low levels. Biochar has also attracted attention as a soil amendment capable of improving yield and soil quality and of reducing soil greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In this work, we review the literature on biochar production potential and its effects on climate, food security, ecosystems, and toxicity.

17.01.2022 Did you catch the interview with Prof Stephen Joseph last night? Stephen has been instrumental in documenting the biochar work in the south west - feeding biochar to cattle and biochar amendments in an avocado orchard. He was also involved in Karry Fisher-Watts' remarkable bush foods orchard - growing rapidly and vigorously in a salt laden paddock in Brookton. An up-scaling of this methodology will be on display at UWA's research farm at Pingelly and the process workshopped tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing the results https://iview.abc.net.au/show/great-acceleration

16.01.2022 Biochar itself is only part of the value pyrolysis generates.

16.01.2022 An ideal time to trek out to Pingelly - check out the wildflowers on your way to see how biochar and other amendments have been applied to this restoration project.

16.01.2022 Activated Biochar in Animal Health SOFT Agriculture Pty Ltd offers a range of certified organic products that improve the health and productivity of animals and... the quality of soils. The key ingredient of their Green Stockfeed range is a specially formulated blend of Activated Biochar for animal ingestion to improve livestock health, aid weight gain and ultimately improve the profitability of an animal farm operation. Activated biochar is very good at retaining water, toxins, and bacteria. These qualities cause activated biochar to slow digestion and increase gastrointestinal tract surface area, allowing for improved FCR and production. It also allows toxins and bacteria to be absorbed by the activated biochar and not by the animal's digestive system, leading to improved health and decreased mortalities. A number of other advantages have been noted from using activated biochar in animal feed, including: - Reduced ammonia emissions (safer for animals and environment, nitrogen stored as protein, rewards from clean energy regulators) - Dryer and improved manure quality - Stored carbon (income from carbon credits) Find out more by visiting their website https://softagriculture.com.au/ #animalhealth #biochar

15.01.2022 Bit of trivia. My daughter's garden. Weeping mulberries with cornflowers beneath. Tree on the right had a biochar mix added when the cornflowers were planted. Not only is the tree's foliage greener but the flowers have grown!

15.01.2022 A very detailed paper with some useful tables - Table 2: Biochar characteristic in different temperature from [many] fruit and vegetables biomass Table 3: Experiments about using of biochar as soil amendment in different doses on different soil type

15.01.2022 A use for those feral willows of the east? Amongst the tested biochars, biochar produced from willow woodchips achieved the best results in terms of plant growth and P uptake in a P deficient soil. This was attributed to its high liming equivalence and provision of additional P which made it a useful soil amendment in Andosols with low P fertility, by improving P bioavailability and thus plant productivity.

14.01.2022 Some High Plains Biochar LLC lick tubs being fed in Kansas.

14.01.2022 With all the infrastructure being rolled out, it's an opportunity to reduce carbon emissions as well as create new industries and new jobs. Is the government prepared to explore these options?

14.01.2022 Was wanting to pass on to Andre details of funding available to regional airports - management of runways is a major expense and Carboncor's biochar asphalt is worth considering. Andre, as an engineer, has a better chance of convincing local authorities! https://www.grants.gov.au/Go/Show

13.01.2022 My mission too - an effective cost efficient, low labour intensive method to reduce char size (sledge hammer on ute tray is one discarded oprion!).

13.01.2022 Energy intensive industries looking for coal-based alternatives continues to grow.

12.01.2022 This book (also available digitally) has an open source design for a kontiki kiln besides stacks of info.

11.01.2022 This could be a game changer in converting stubble to a manageable biochar feedstock - and could be used to produce stock feed with more nutritious fodder, a flexibility that would increase ROI potential. Geoff Perkins Farm Machinery (Narrogin) couldn't say how much or when it could be landed in WA but it has attracted considerable interest.

11.01.2022 Tony Evans has a post on this site, about to deliver compost/biochar for a Victorian trial on a dairy farm near Simpson. https://www.facebook.com//1835/permalink/2443485129278453/

06.01.2022 Action to improve forest health shouldn't be predicated on the economic basis of the biomass returning a profit from mechanical harvesting. Pyrolysis of biomass produces energy, heat, biofuels, horticulture CO2, pyroligneous acid and biochar. Biochar itself has manifold applications: soil amendment, livestock supplement, water filtration, minesite rehabilitation (contaminant absorption), 'green' component in asphalt and concrete, metallurgy, composting, odour control and much more. Carbon neutral pyrolysis has a multiplier effect on emissions when the many and varied carbon sequestration and/or emission reduction applications of biochar are factored into the equation. Not counting the enormous costs associated with bushfires and the carbon lost to the atmosphere as a result.

05.01.2022 What other developments are happening in WA?

05.01.2022 "Activating biochar by manipulating the bacterial and fungal microbiome through pre-conditioning" provides pointers on how best to apply biochar in a horticultural setting (esp). The link should work! https://nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com//full/10.1111/nph.15042

04.01.2022 Here's hoping the enthusiasm is contagious.

03.01.2022 The abstract of this paper effectively summarises biochar benefits - and points to a cost-effective way to reduce pest plants (of which we have plenty!). "The utilization of biochar as an amendment to improve soil health and the environment has been a catalyst for the recent global enthusiasm for advancing biochar production technology and its management. Biochar is simply carbon rich charcoal-like substance which is created by heating biomass (organic matter) in limited oxyg...en condition, through a process known as pyrolysis. Locally available weed biomass which is not economically important and caused crop loss can be used as an important source of biomass for preparation of biochar. Biochar is able to ameliorate soil acidity as well as it is also able to increase the soil fertility. Biochar reduces leaching of soil nutrients, increases soil structure and pH, reduces dependency on artificial fertilizers, enhances nutrient availability for plants, increases water quality of runoff, reduces toxicity of aluminum to plant roots and microbiota and thus reducing the need for lime, reduces bioavailability of heavy metals, thus works as bioremediation and decreases N2O and CH4 emissions from soils, thus further reducing GHG emissions. Employment of biochar as a specialized soil amendment provides a practical approach to address the anticipated problems in the agronomic and environmental sectors. Incorporating huge quantity of biochar into soils provides numerous agricultural benefits, which this special paper examines..." https://www.researchgate.net//340524709_Soil_Health_Manage See more

02.01.2022 Milled hemp biochar. Produced as a byproduct of solvent-free essential oil extraction by microwave pyrolysis. @www.newgreen.tech

02.01.2022 Local hemp growers?

01.01.2022 At last able to get out into the yard and bag up some biochar that's been piled up and waiting for months. Grasses around the edge have grown prolifically. Take a look at the roots on this oat clump. (Next job - weed the path!)

01.01.2022 Last poaching from this site today! Would recommend incorporation of biochar/compost before planting as opposed to leaving on the surface for eventual working into the profile by soil organisms.
