20.01.2022 PORT PHILLIP NORTH & BEYOND 26th July 2012 Report #121, supplied by Brenton Hodges and Fishnet.com.au This week, it’s all about the keen up and coming young anglers who just can’t seem to get enough fishing under their belt! ... PORT PHILLIP BAY Youngster, Jed Hull, landed a very respectable gummy shark on a whole squid while fishing with his family at Altona reef last weekend. Jed says he immediately knew there was something big on the end of his bait-caster outfit, because it nearly pulled him out of the boat on the first run! At just ten years of age, what a great effort! Fishing nearby, fellow keen young angler, George Gabriel, and his father Con, found a few quality fish in the shallows while casting soft plastics. Drifting ever so slowly in calm mirror-like conditions over just 3 m of water, the boys tempted pinkie snapper to 1.8 kg and flathead on Berkley Powerbait Minnows and Damiki Rippers rigged Texas style on off-set worm hooks. Earlier in the day, George also managed a thumping big squid and dropped a couple of others. During the recent holiday period, Nick Whelan ventured out from St leonards in his kayak and managed a nice feed of whiting and flathead. According to Nick, the whiting were a little smaller than usual, but they responded well to fresh squid, which were a little tough to come by at times. He also mentioned that berley was the key to holding the whiting close to the boat, but it did bring on the pickers, such as leatherjackets, as the session progressed. Michael Molinaro from the Fishing Lunatix spent a few hours on the pier at Blairgowrie teaching his twin boys, Ethan and Xavier, some of the basics. Fortunately, garfish, grass whiting, mullet and plenty of juvenile salmon were all on the chew, which kept the boys very busy and highly entertained.

15.01.2022 Once again, reports from the northern reaches of Port Phillip have been scarce of late, but there certainly should be plenty of pinkie Snapper on offer across the inner reefs. Making the most of some fine winter weather, Matthew De Martin managed a 4 kg red while flicking a soft plastic in 15 m of water off Carrum. According to Matt, the cooler months don’t produce many Snapper, but there are some good fish about at times. ... This one took a liking to a Gulp Jerk Shad in the Nuclear Chicken colour pattern just after the low tide change. Several flathead were also encountered throughout the morning. An early morning start paid dividends for John Regali and his mate, Roy, down at Geelong earlier this month. Pitching a small piece of pilchard in close to the rocks along the waterfront yielded a surprise run of pinkie Snapper. Later in the morning, plenty of Yellow-eye Mullet kept the boys entertained before a school of salmon showed up. John says worm pattern soft plastics proved effective on the salmon. Strangely, however, the following day failed to produce a single bite! More recently, John put in some time along the rocks at North Shore, but once again, failed to trouble the scorers. Shifting back around to Yarra Street Pier, it seems everyone was struggling on this occasion with very few fish taken for the weekend. Further south, Matt Cini from Reel Time Fishing Charters says the winter whiting fishing has been excellent, particularly in 5 to 7 m of water from St Leonards through to Queenscliff. According to Matt, the size of the whiting seems to fluctuate depending on the conditions with the larger fish more active in murky water stirred up by strong winds or heavy tides. A steady stream of berley combined with a small strip of squid has been the standout bait, followed by pipi and fresh mussel. Squid have also been about in reasonable numbers across the shallow weed beds, although the most of the larger specimens have come from the deeper kelp forests. Reel Time whiting charters will be available up until October when the focus undoubtedly switches to Snapper.
