24.01.2022 14 November is World Diabetes Day. This year's theme is Diabetes: Nurses Make the Difference Today and everyday we celebrate nurses and their vital and varied role in diabetes management and care.... At Boab Health Services three out of our four diabetes educators have a background in nursing, as do many of our staff in our ITC, allied health, mental health and executive management teams. As an organisation delivering services to over 50 locations throughout the Kimberley, we deeply value and rely on our partnerships, collaborations and working-relationships with nurses in all fields across the Kimberley. From prevention, community and population health, to nurses in remote health clinics, emergency departments, renal and aged care: nurses are integral to managing the high rates of diabetes in the Kimberley. This week we say thank you to our nursing colleges and comrades with WA Country Health Service, local Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services, Kimberely Renal Service, Kimberely Population Health Unit, Juniper Aged Care and all other services providers involved in supporting the management of diabetes across the Kimberley. Featured in this image are L - R: Helen, Bernie, Genesis (nurse in training and clinic superstar), Marian, Jane, Lynda, Michele, Sharon, Wendy, Terri and Caroline. Nurses are from Boab Health, Fitzroy Crossing, Noonkembah, Bayulu, Wangkatjungka and Ord Valley Aboriginal Health Service - OVAHS #WDD2020 #worlddiabetesday2020

23.01.2022 It is soooo good to be back doing what we love the most - delivering outreach services to remote Aboriginal communities. In consultation with our partners in health including WA Country Health Service remote health clinics and Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services we are returning to deliver our allied and mental health services and ITC program to remote Aboriginal communities across the Kimberley. Today our A Team delivered our first DOSS clinic (diabetes one-sto...p-shop) in over 4 months at Warmun Remote Area Health Service. During this program our multidisciplinary team (diabetes educator, dietitian and podiatrist) work with local clinic staff (Aborigianl Health Workers, nurses and GP) and the client to support them to self-manage (or prevent) diabetes.

15.01.2022 Earlier this year we commissioned Broome-based Aboriginal artist Matilda Pascoe to create Kimberley Connections, a piece of artwork to represent the Boab Health Services story. About Kimberley Connections... The two large concentric circles in the artwork represent our main hubs in Broome and Kununurra. As you follow the journey from the West Kimberley to the East, each circle represents smaller towns and remote communities where we deliver primary health care services. Inspired by the colours of Country to tell our story, Matildas prominent use of turquoise depicts the ocean and saltwater people. The green and sandstone colours represent the freshwater river systems, and the earthy red ochre tones incorporate the rich pindan of the desert. About the artist Matilda Pascoe is an Aboriginal artist who incorporates the concepts of traditional Aboriginal art to produce her acrylic on canvas contemporary art. Matildas love of her immediate family and the beauty of the natural environment are predominately visual in her unique style of art. Born Matilda Queama at Koonibba Mission in South Australia, she was raised by her grandmother who later adopted her, and she became Matilda Pascoe. Matilda was married to Dr Arnold Puggy Hunter, renowned Aboriginal health and justice advocate. Matilda has lived in the Kimberley region of Westen Australia for nearly forty years and currently lives in Broome. Note: There are many different Aboriginal nations within the Kimberley. Locally we use Country to class these language groups into geographical regions.

15.01.2022 How we talk to our little ones become their inner voice. Commenting on young childrens appearance is something many of us do automatically but are we subconsciously teaching children, especially our girls, that their appearance is more important than being kind, inquisitive, strong, smart or creative? We love these helpful alternative compliments by Big Life Journal.

14.01.2022 Lunch at Nooky Trinda and Terri (photographer) last week delivered outreach dietetic and diabetes education services to Noonkanbah Aboriginal Community in the Fitzroy Valley. We deliver these, as well as podiatry services, on a monthly basis to Nooky.... We are also available to deliver these services to Wangkatjungka and Bayulu communities on an as needed basis. So, if you live in Wangkatjungka or Bayulu Community and would like to see one of our allied health team to help manage your diabetes, healthy eating or caring for your feet pop into your local clinic and ask for our services.

14.01.2022 We are often told processed food is bad for us. And while our dietitians encourage eating mostly whole foods (e.g veg, fruit, meat, milk etc.) processed or packaged foods can be an absolute lifesaver in our busy lives. Our East Kimberley dietitians Mandy and Leah recently went on an incredible overnight kayak trip down Lake Kununurra and brought these John West Australia & New Zealand pouches for lunch on their action-packed first day.... These pre-packaged tuna and bean pouches are convenient, taste great and contain mostly whole foods. They come ready to eat straight from the pack and as a nutrient-dense food, will keep you going all day. Whats the trick to choosing a healthier option when purchasing purchased food Read the label A long ingredients list full of words you cant pronounce is a sign that a food is overly processed. Avoid products with salt or sugar in the first few ingredients on the list. For more information on choosing healthier processed food click here: https://bit.ly/3aWyzRE
