24.01.2022 Next year we’re heading to Mount Isa for our first truly outback Expo event and Blackheath & Thornburgh] were our first boarding school to register for this event - we think that’s pretty special !! We know that our most remote families will welcome the opportunity to meet with boarding schools closer to the place that they call home and @i_am_icpa will be right there with us. Did you know that Mount Isa School of the Air is the largest School of the Air in Australia with stu...dents from right across northern Australia ! Yes even WA ! Blackheath & Thornburgh] knows this, and as a co-educational boarding school from Charters Towers they’re proud of their outback connections - let’s just say it’s not their first ‘rodeo’ up here ! If you would like to know more about our events, or begin your search for the right boarding school for your child then head over to our website link in bio or www.boardingexpo.com.AU Our 2022 Expos are filling up fast and we’ll be featuring each school over the coming weeks/months. It’s really good to know that our schools love to come to the places we call home. #mountisa #boardingexpo #charterstowers #australianboardingschools #boardingschool #boardingschoolsaustralia #boardinglife #remoteeducation #ruralandremoteschools

23.01.2022 FYI. Please consider joining the ICPA if you're not already a member.

22.01.2022 Who's noticed trigger words that make your kids act up even more when you're trying to talk to them? Here's an interesting take on 'resistance words' and why they can often have the opposite effect of what we're after. We'd love to hear your thoughts about this topic - does it make sense? Are you conscious of your language when talking with your kids? Is it different to talking with adults?... https://www.parentingideas.com.au//resistance-words-to-av/

22.01.2022 Good news for our Yanco families.

21.01.2022 A heads up if you don't subscribe to our e-news - the dates for Griffith and Wagga Wagga Expos in 2021 have changed. They're now: Griffith - 3 June Wagga Wagga - 4 & 5 June... Details are on the website and we'll be updating you as we get closer. The best way to get those updates is to subscribe to our monthly e-news. Check it out when you look at the 2021 dates...and all the other great stuff we have on our site. https://www.boardingexpo.com.au/2021-expos/

21.01.2022 ICPA (Aust) has collated all Federal Education Allowances for rural and remote students in one handy document. This includes rates, application criteria and cl...osing dates for Assistance for Isolated Children (AIC), Youth Allowance, Tertiary Access Payment plus so much more. 20.01.2022 Each month, we have the privilege of sharing stories of boarding, often from the boarders themselves. It's one of the things we love most about what we do, as no one knows boarding quite like those who are living it. Our theme this year has been resilience, and there's definitely been plenty of material to work with in terms of challenges. If you haven't already done so, check out our blog and read for yourself what these incredible kids take on when they commit to the boardi...ng experience and all it offers. We've got one more boarder story coming to you next month before we shift focus a little for the rest of the year. Stay tuned! https://www.boardingexpo.com.au/blog/

20.01.2022 We all need our friends. For those so used to a lot of socialisation means the restrictions around Covid have been particularly hard. This probably more so for young people. This article looks at some of the results of a Growing Up in Australia study and what friendships mean for resilience in our youth. Bottom line: close relationships make our kids stronger.... https://theconversation.com/teens-with-at-least-one-close-f

19.01.2022 VIDEO TO WATCH: We shared the link to this Ted talk in last month's e-news, but thought it worth sharing more widely. It's in line with our focus this year on resilience in our kids - timely too considering what some of our kids have gone through this year. In his research for NASA, clinical psychologist Raphael Rose discovered that failure is key to creating resilience. He explains how leaning into trials and setbacks builds the emotional callouses that help us value what's good in life.

19.01.2022 PODCAST RECOMMENDATION: This one is a little taster of a special guest we have joining us from next month. Dr Justin Coulson's Happy Families will be our guest blogger for the next few months. He also has a great podcast for parents who want all the answers but don't have any time! Check it out. https://www.happyfamilies.com.au/podcasts/

18.01.2022 PODCAST RECOMMENDATION: This one was recommended to us - a weekly podcast documenting the new Dad adventures of Charlie Clausen and Osher Günsberg, called DadPod. Let us know what you think. https://podtail.com//dadpod-with-charlie-clausen-and-oshe/

17.01.2022 A project for you.

16.01.2022 << NEW BLOG FOR YOU FROM DR JUSTIN POULSON >> If you’re wondering how to talk to your daughter about body image, you’re not alone. It’s a conversation that has no beginning or end, but continues throughout your daughter’s life. Dr Justin Coulson's Happy Families gives us 8 ways to help our daughters love their bodies. https://www.boardingexpo.com.au/8-ways-to-help-your-daught/

15.01.2022 We hear parents (mostly Mums) saying all the time: "You've got to pick your battles." Some things just aren't worth fighting about, right? In this blog from Parenting Ideas, parenting educator, Michael Grose talks about why you shouldn't sweat the small stuff.

14.01.2022 Did you catch the new dates for our Riverina Expos? They're all here for when you're filling in that 2021 calendar. https://www.boardingexpo.com.au/2021-expos/

12.01.2022 QUICK TIP: If you're wondering where to start with your research into boarding schools, look at the Directory on our website. You can narrow it down to state, gender, location, as well as other criteria. Each school will have further information on their page on the site. It's a good page to bookmark. If you have a shortlist together already, you might be interested in using our interview booking service as well? You'll find it on the website too. https://www.boardingexpo.com.au/boarding-school-directory/

11.01.2022 Have you booked an interview with your schools shortlist using our online booking form? We'd love to hear from you about the experience. Message us. We've had a steady flow of bookings over the past few months, and the schools are loving the opportunity to be able to talk to families they would have normally caught up with at the Expos. The feedback from both families and schools has been that it's a great way to keep the conversations going. We'd love to hear your thoughts.... https://www.boardingexpo.com.au/book-an-interview/

10.01.2022 BOOK RECOMMENDATION: Who has a kid or kids on the cusp of teenager-hood? Sometimes you need a sense of humour to get through those years - each year is sometimes described as 'dog years'. The book, So...You're Having a Teenager is described as a straight-talking, laugh-out-loud survival guide to raising teenagers by Sarah Macdonald (journalist, podcaster, ABC Radio presenter) and Cathy Wilcox (cartoonist). In a review of the book, Kathy Lette wrote: "I love my kids with a ...primal passion but when they hit puberty I wanted to hand them back for a refund. If only I'd had this witty, gritty owner's manual. It's a pithy, practical guide for all deranged parents." We all need a laugh.

09.01.2022 This month's blog post from Dr Justin Coulson's Happy Families looks at how encouraging independence in your teen will help them be prepared for their new responsibilities, and how boarding school may help them explore that independence. https://www.boardingexpo.com.au/encouraging-independence-i/

09.01.2022 Please support the work ICPA NSW Access to Education are doing on #nobordersforboarders - our kids need acess to their education and their families need access to their kids.

07.01.2022 Term 4 is now well underway and thankfully 2020 is whizzing past. It also means if you were planning that conversation with your shortlist of schools as part of your boarding research, you're starting to run out of time. We've got a little over a month until the term ends, so jump online, answer a few questions and check in your shortlisted schools on our form and let us do the rest. While you're waiting, check out the 2021 Expo dates and pop them in your calendar. https://www.boardingexpo.com.au/book-an-interview/

06.01.2022 Year 12 Kinross Wolaroi School boarder, Chelsea White from Narromine has had a tough few years. First there was the drought, then there was Covid, added to which she’s working to complete her final year of school. For Chelsea though, as well as her family, she's had a community of support as a boarder. She shares her experience with us in the last of our boarder stories for 2020. https://www.boardingexpo.com.au/boarding-offers-a-communit/

06.01.2022 We're continuing to offer our interview booking service through until the end of the year. So, if you're still thinking about shortlisting schools and want to have a conversation with them -- even as a warm-up to meeting them face-to-face at a 2021 Expo, jump online, fill in the form and we'll make the initial contact. We've had several families utilise the service in lieu of this year's Expos, and we expect to be booking more interviews as the year progresses. It's an easy way to dip your toe in the water. https://www.boardingexpo.com.au/book-an-interview/

05.01.2022 As schools in our most Eastern States (NSW, Victoria) have returned over the past week or two, we have been fielding many enquiries from city families and those located in Regional centres about the possible benefits for their children of boarding at school during the week. The rolling lockdowns, working from home for many families, the commuting juggle..... this piece by Dr Justin Coulson, Happy Families, was written for Boarding Schools Expo. "...when it comes to relationships, boarders report having better ones with their families and peers than day students. In fact, those students believe that their parents ‘understand’ them better and that overall they get along with other students well." Dr Justin Coulson.

04.01.2022 We're all online so much more these days, and one of the cons of that has been increased online scam activity. This information has been circulated during a recent National Scams Awareness Week but it's information that we should be sharing with those in our communities who aren't as digital savvy as they maybe should be - young and old alike. And just because our kids are digital natives, doesn't mean they're digital savvy. https://www.nbnco.com.au//awareness-and-education-key-to-s

04.01.2022 HIVE MIND: We need your help. It's through our community of schools and boarding families that we often find some gems of useful information to share. We'd love to hear from you about what sort of information you're tapping into at the moment. What's been really useful and what's worth sharing with others? Feel free to message us your ideas or pop them in the comments.

04.01.2022 The start of a new week can bring a sense of renewal or chaos.... we're always trying to plan our week ahead over the weekend but will admit to a certain level of distraction ! This image of Macquarie Anglican Grammar students showing cattle at a recent event just lit up our morning here at BSE. Better known as MAGS, this co-educational boarding school is located in Dubbo, NSW - virtually the centre of everywhere ! @macquarieanglican will be joining us at all of our NSW Expo...s in 2022 - Dubbo, Wagga Wagga, Moree and Tamworth. Give your Boarding School a shoutout here and ask them if they've registered for next year's events.... we always loved it when our schools came to town and we know you do too ! #boardingschoolsaustralia #australianboardingschools #nswboardingschools #regionalboardingschools #boardinglife #remoteandregionaleducation #destinationboarding #ruralaustralia #qldboardingschools #vicboardingschools #waboardingschools #saboardingschools #tasboardingschools #ntboardingschools #boardingexpo

02.01.2022 November always marks the home run to the end of term here. It's often the point in the year when we look back over what we've achieved before putting our feet up for the summer. But are we really going to dwell on 2020 too much? One of the things we will celebrate though are all the amazing boarders, their families and schools we've talked with over the year. If you're looking for a feel good read about just what resilient, hopeful, articulate kids make up our boarding communities, you must look through our blog. https://www.boardingexpo.com.au/blog/

02.01.2022 The team that ensures rural, regional and remote families have equitable access to education.

01.01.2022 We're going to take a break over summer while everyone tries to recover from the year that was. So, that means only a few weeks left until the end of term and time to line up a chat with your shortlisted schools through our interview booking service. It's a great way to set up for face-to-face meetings in 2021. https://www.boardingexpo.com.au/book-an-interview/
