From this date, only 406 MHz distress beacons will be detected. So if you still have a 121.5 MHz EPIRB onboard you must look at changing to a 406 MHz for your own safety and the safety of others onboard your boat. Each 406 MHz beacon needs to be registered to an individual person and their craft and carries a unique identification code, transmitted when the beacons is activated. The unique code provides vital information about the registered boat and its owner ensuring a faster and more effective search and rescue response appropriate to vessel size. Outdated analogue beacons provided only a position to rescuers.
