THE BIG NEWS Rottnest Island will be reopened to visitors, overnight guests and boaters on Saturday 6 June 2020. The reopening includes the Islands surrounding marine reserve. Boating Western Australia would like to thank the boating community for playing their part and taking the restrictions seriously. It was a major concession for recreational boaters and what an amazing result in our efforts to halt Covid-19. Now that access has been granted, we will continue to urge the WA Government that they consider the possibility of a rebate to moorings owners for the 8 weeks where they were unable to access their leased moorings at Rottnest. More to come Rottnest beckons enjoy Boaters and BE SAFE! ABOUT BEING SAFE !! The rebuild of the Fuel Jetty is underway hence the old Fuel Jetty is being dismantled, and there is NO FUEL AVAILABLE!! 21.01.2022 Rottnest Island has a new Chief Executive Officer in Michelle Reynolds and Boating Western Australia welcomes her. At a recent meeting with the CEO we spoke openly and with our eyes firmly on the future for Rottnest and we were delighted with the energy for the task ahead and the attention to our ideas for Rottnest that Michelle exhibited. Ultimately our goals are the same BoatingWA want to make the Island as attractive, safe and amenable as possible to ensure the saf...ety and enjoyment of Recreational Bo9aters. The Rottnest Island Authority essentially stated the same goals. Boaters are tourists and Recreational Boaters are major contributors to the Island coffers. It was an excellent meeting of minds with our new CEO keen to tackle the task of ensuring that Rottnest is the Ultimate Boating Destination BoatingWA is more than happy to assist in any way possible to secure that for Boaters. Best Regards Colin Lockley PRESIDENT Boating Western Australia
21.01.2022 Message from the Department of Transport COVID-19 update for Western Australian boaties, paddlers, windsurfers and kiteboarders This Easter, the Department of Transport is urging boat owners to stay at home, where you can, and to play your role in limiting the spread of COVID-19 by postponing unnecessary boating activity.... The advice is very clear you should stay in your home where you can to protect yourself and others from COVID-19 and from potentially spreading the disease. Only leave for essential activities such as work, shopping for food, exercise or medical appointments. If your boating needs are essential and you decide to go out, social distancing rules apply at the boat ramp and on your boat. You should only be on your boat with no more than one other person; or with family who ordinarily live in the same household as you. If you windsurf, kiteboard, kayak or paddle and consider it essential for your wellbeing, please observe social distancing. Visit our website for all the current information. We all need to do what is right for our community at this time, and support our Marine Officers, WA Police and Marine Rescue volunteers who do a vital job and carry out essential work in the boating community. https://marine.cmail19.com//04B6E24E00BB9D174AB3169DA1FD82
20.01.2022 Old4New lifejacket campaign The Department of Transport in conjunction with the Royal Life Saving Society of Western Australia is launching a new lifejacket awareness campaign, Old4New, on April 8, 2016. A proven winner in other jurisdictions, the campaign educates boaters about the benefits of new easy to wear inflatable lifejackets.... As part of the campaign, a new inflatable lifejacket, along with educational material will be provided under a trade-in scheme where people can surrender their old, damaged or obsolete lifejacket for a self-inflating, slim fitting style lifejacket at a discounted price of $50. The first Old4New lifejacket upgrade opportunity will occur on each day at the Hillarys Boat Show commencing April 8, 2016, between the hours of 10:30am and 12:30pm at the Department of Transport Marine Safety Education trailer. A maximum of 80 lifejackets will be available for upgrade daily. There will be ongoing opportunities to upgrade old style lifejackets at other events throughout the year. It is an exciting initiative that we have no doubt will be very popular but the ultimate aim is to change the behaviour of boaters in WA and have the majority of people on board a boat wearing a lifejacket at all times. http://us8.campaign-archive1.com/
20.01.2022 Lifejackets are the perfect gift for those who go boating this Christmas. More than 200,000 West Australians have a Recreational Skippers Ticket and together with the family and friends they go boating with, they represent a significant part of our community. We want to keep them safe. While it is not compulsory to wear a lifejacket at all times when on the water it is excellent boating practice and makes sense when you consider the consequences of not wearing one.... The updated Lifejackets brochure from DOT is now available. You can download the guide from the link below http://www.transport.wa.gov.au//MAC_B_Safety_Equipment_Lif
19.01.2022 POTABLE WATER TAP - LONGREACH TOILETS ROTTNEST ISLAND Boating Western Australia (BWA) made mention of problems in accessing water for jerry cans and boat "top ups " at the Longreach Toilets at our last meeting with the Rottnest Island Authority. At which we met the new Chief Executive Officer - Michelle Reynolds - and the Marine Facilities Co-ordinator - Russell Northcott. Mr Northcott said "let me look at that issue and see what can be done !" . Well he did and now we have... a much needed and greatly appreciated facility for water replenishment , and a good spot to rinse off the sand before entering the toilets/showers. Great Work RIA Team and thank you .
18.01.2022 A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT COLIN LOCKLEY BOATIES ANCHOR AT HOME: Re Department of Transport Notice and Facebook Posting. Department of Transport have not stopped everyone from Boating BUT - they are asking Boaties to exercise every precaution in relation to Covid19. ... The safest place to be, as we are all aware, is at home in Isolation. Our boats do need use and checking but if you are intent on doing that then you MUST abide by the parameters set for you. There are limits on who can be aboard do not potentially share the virus with others by inviting friends. Travel with your immediate (isolation) family only. Do not think that it is okay to go visiting or for walks at your destination. Easter is approaching and it will be a testing time for Boaters. Kids in isolation and the promise of a quiet drink with friends are not sufficient reasons to break the rules. Boat Safely Boat within the rules. If you are doubtful or in two minds DONT BOAT ! Frustrating as it is your Boat will still be there at the end of this isolation! You can Boat but please consider all of the above. We love our Boating but Covid19 knows no friends. Best regards, Safe and Healthy Boating Colin Lockley PRESIDENT Boating Western Australia Ph. 08 9335 3296 PO Box 692, SOUTH FREMANTLE WA 6162

In discussions today with the Rottnest Island Authority is it evident that Boating to and around Rottnest Island will cease by Friday 27th March 2020.... 12.01.2022 Rottnest Island - Disposal of boat batteries. Please make sure your return your batteries to specified locations on the mainland as it is not permitted to leave them on Rottnest Island. As Rottnest works towards increased sustainability, the Rottnest island Authority encourage visitors to the Island to engage in environmentally friendly behaviours such as disposing of waste correctly. ... One issue the RIA have been facing recently is that some members of the boating community have been leaving used boat batteries at the end of the jetty as waste. Rottnest Island does not have an appropriate facility to process the batteries and they are disposed of as hazardous waste before being stockpiled and then shipped off the Island. This not only comes at a cost to RIA time and finances to stockpile and dispose of the batteries but also to the environment, as the batteries are unable to be recycled at all if they are classed as hazardous waste. There are allocated locations to dispose of boat batteries at the Fishing Boat Harbour in Fremantle, and for members, there is also a disposal point at the Fremantle Sailing Club.
12.01.2022 Are you interested in a Swan Canning Riverpark mooring? You only have until 4pm Friday August 26, 2016 to register for the public ballot for 40 unallocated moorings in the Swan Canning Riverpark. The unallocated moorings are located throughout the riverpark in current approved mooring zones and vary in size from a minimum of five metres to a maximum of 14 metres. Public demand for moorings in the riverpark is always extremely high and strong interest is expected from members ...of the boating community wanting to secure one of these prized sites. The Department of Transport (DoT) has engaged the Western Australian Electoral Commission to conduct the ballot. For more information, visit Moorings Ballot or contact DoT on 9431 1001. http://us8.campaign-archive2.com/

07.01.2022 Its that time of year where we ask of you to support Boating Western Australia (BoatingWA) in our pursuit of the best facilities, and fairest fees from Governments and Authorities for all Recreational Boaters FOR YOU. 2017/18 was a very busy year and some of the outcomes were: Bunbury boaters safe passage to the Ocean and return. ... Lobbying, public rally, approaches to Ministers and Council and links with community leaders saw the new Railway Bridge Walkway raised to a height of 3.6 metres rather than the planned 2.2 metres. Boaters now have safe access to the ocean and can return home even on a high tide. A sensational result and a good hearing from Local Government ensured that result. BoatingWA ensured the good hearing! This ultimately became a fantastic link of public spirit and donation to support a good outcome from their Local Authority. 30% discount on fares with Rottnest Express. No landing fee to return to Rottnest if you need to go back to the mainland for an appointment or meeting. Deliveries from the Rottnest Island General Store available during holiday periods. 03.01.2022 NEW FOR OLD LIFE JACKET EXCHANGE PROGRAM. BoatingWA works hard to promote safety in our Boating Fraternity and one of the ways that we do this is to promote and subsidise quality inflatable life jackets to all boaters through the Old4New Lifejacket Exchange Program. Bring in your old jacket and receive new ones for a subsidised price. In conjunction with the Dept of Transport (Marine Safety) we have been heading out to Clubs and speaking with the Members on equipment and ...techniques to ensure that they return home to their families after a day out on the water! On Friday night 27th July in conjunction with David Philpott from the Dept of Transport, Marine Safety Division and the Rockingham Sea Search and Rescue Boating WA ran a safety night at the beautiful Mangles Bay Fishing Club in Rockingham. We would like to thank the lovely people of Mangles Bay Fishing Club for their warm welcome. (the pot belly stove was amazing). The hospitality was warm and friendly. Thanks to all the hard working Committee of Mangles Bay for allowing us to promote safer boating for all. David Philpott came in from his holidays to give demonstrations on the correct use, care and maintenance of life jackets. Two current in use life jackets were presented to David to inspect and were found to be faulty. This highlights the need to regularly check and maintain your jackets. The gas air cylinders can be weighed to check that indeed they havent leaked. The main point of the night was regular checks on your jackets. You dont keep flat batteries in your smoke detectors at home! The other very valid point was in wearing your jackets while boating. The demonstrations clearly showed how comfortable they are to wear while engaging in all water related activities. Discussions were held on auto inflating opposed to manual inflating Rockingham Sea Search and Rescue gave a talk and introduced a competition whereby you enrol and every time you log on you go into a draw for a prize. This hopefully will get more boaters logging on and off. This is a great incentive to encourage people to use their radios without being under the pressure of being in an emergency situation. We also thank our hard working Board Member Robert Andrews in organizing the night and Board Member Kim Wilkie for his brilliant secretarial/marketing skills in taking orders for the life jackets. The turn out was great for a cold winters night but for those who may have missed out BoatingWA is still around and your President has indicated that he would like to strengthen relationships with BoatingWA. We are happy to come back and catch up with those Members who could not attend on the night. A great night was had by all and hard fishing Members of Mangles Bay head to sea a little safer! See more
