23.01.2022 Boating infrastructure at Toronto on Lake Macquarie is under threat now that the Lake Macquarie Council has made public its draft waterfront reserve master plan. Toronto has long been a popular boating destination and an active boating centre on Lake Macquarie, but community boating and boating safety are losers under the Council's draft waterfront master plan. The public comment period has officially closed however the BOA has lobbied the Council to revise its plans.

23.01.2022 We encourage all boaters to compete this survey and let the government know how important boating is to your enjoyment of our waterways. https://www.environment.nsw.gov.au//nsw-water-quality-obje

23.01.2022 HAND OVER YOUR MONEY!!! This is the message from the Inner West Council as it celebrates the New Year. If you use a Dinghy Storage Rack within the Inner West Council LGA, your next renewal will include a fee increase of 122%.... Thats right, because you have a dinghy, you have a boat, and because you have a boat, a 122% increase on last years fee is no problem! If you were not consulted about this hike, and would like to say something, heres the Mayors email address: [email protected] If you use a Dinghy Storage Rack in another LGA, be warned! Once Inner West Council has demonstrated what an easy touch we are, other councils will be in on the action soon enough...

20.01.2022 Seriously, what is wrong with some people!?

20.01.2022 Check out the latest boating news from our friends at Alfoat magazine and let them know how you "stayed salty" during lockdown.

20.01.2022 STRANGE TIMES ON THE WATER!! COVID-19 rules might affect your plans to self-isolate in the isolation of your own boat. Please be sure to read the attached advice from Transport for NSW, and if you happen to see NSW Maritime vessels powering into your personal space, youll know what its all about...... https://mcusercontent.com///Maritime_Update_COVID19.01.pdf

19.01.2022 A large waterspout formed off the coast between Wallabi Point and Diamond Beach near Taree, NSW, on 7 June 2020 and @ricbrewer (on Instagram) was there to cap...ture it. A waterspout looks like a slender tornado but occurs only over water. Cool, unstable air masses passing over warmer waters allow vigorous updraughts to form, which can tighten up into a spinning column. The cool, moist air usually supports a full condensation funnel. They arent uncommon off the east coast of Australia, but are more likely to be seen in late summer and autumn. Waterspouts can be dangerous for boaters and shoreline locations but are no threat farther inland since they collapse soon after they move onshore.

19.01.2022 Who else is social distancing on the water this weekend?

19.01.2022 Two more weeks on the FADs to enjoy the warm water while it lasts.

18.01.2022 Heres how the latest water restrictions apply to boats and trailers in Sydney, the Blue Mountains and the Illawarra. You can still flush your engine and essential safety components on trailers can be washed with a trigger-fitted hose. General washing of private boats is allowed for 10 minutes using a hose fitted with a trigger nozzle after the boat has been in seawater. General trailer washing is only allowed with a bucket and sponge or at a commercial car wash. Please take note and be as responsible with water as you are on it: https://www.sydneywater.com.au//water-restrictio/index.htm

17.01.2022 The NSW Port Authority has postponed its investigation into the business case for a cruise ship terminal at Yarra Bay for 18 months. Hopefully the proposal is scrapped altogether and this area can be preserved for families and recreational boaters.

17.01.2022 This is welcome news for trailer boat owners!

16.01.2022 The goal for this petition was 1,000 signatures but it has already smashed that target and now the organisers are aiming for 2,000. Seems theres a lot of support for the stalled Snug Cove Safe Harbour project at Eden. The BOA encourages you to sign and support a worthy proposal for the boaters of southern NSW.

14.01.2022 SOS from our friends on the Mid North Coast: The Manning River entrance has been an issue for years, but little is being done by our state government. To all boat owners association members, families and staff: please print off and sign the attached petition to encourage the state government to move forward with the safe opening of the Manning river with 2 permanent rock walls. The local MP has advised if we can collect 10,000 signatures he can then bring it to parliament fo...r the debate. All forms can be returned to us by email: [email protected] See more

12.01.2022 ANCHORING ALERT - CABBAGE TREE BAY Divers are reporting (unconfirmed) anchoring damage to seagrass on the bed of Cabbage Tree Bay (CTB), Shelly Beach, Manly. As a result, during the remainder of the summer season, they will be paying closer attention to vessels anchoring in CTB, and even diving on your anchor to check if it is holding over seagrass. The seagrass exists only in isolated patches in CTB and is rarely present in depths above 6m. If choosing shallower water, check over the bow for bare sand before dropping anchor. Provided you are happy to drop in depths greater than 7-8m, you should not incur any problem and this magnificent playground can be shared by all without any problems of this kind.

11.01.2022 It's Weather Wednesday! Coastal bars are subject to ever changing tide, wave, wind and river conditions. Crossing a coastal bar takes skill, good judgement, an...d an understanding of marine and atmospheric weather conditions. This guide with video from NSW Maritime provides a great learning resource to help you cross coastal bars more safely: https://www.rms.nsw.gov.au//navigation-c/coastal-bars.html You can also call your local Marine Rescue radio operators on VHF Channel 16 to get an up to date report on the current bar conditions at your location.

08.01.2022 The BOA is joining with Recreational Fishing Alliance of NSW and many others to oppose Eurobodalla Shire Councils surprise plan to fill in the popular Lions Park boat ramp at the Batemans Bay bridge and replace it with, of all things, a toilet. Yes you read that right... A TOILET! The boating public deserves better and we must STAND UP to defend OUR facilities and OUR access to the water! Go to the councils website, follow the links in the "Have Your Say" section, and tell them to FLUSH THEIR STINKING PLAN!

08.01.2022 There is some wild weather predicted across most of the state over the weekend including: Widespread thunderstorms, very heavy rain and strong wind squalls ...Strong winds making exposed waters choppy and hazardous Increasing swells and dangerous bar crossing conditions Always check the conditions before and during your time on the water, and remember, if in doubt, don’t go out! 07.01.2022 Container Warning On May 24, 50 containers were lost from a ship off the NSW coast. 35 containers are still missing. Every 45 Minutes, Secure Broadcasts are b...eing transmitted from Marine Rescue bases including Lake Macquarie, Terrey Hills, and Narooma as well as Newcastle Harbour, warning those on the water of the possibility of containers being in the water. At this time the warning area is Port Stephens to Narooma and seaward. Some containers were recovered from the Hawkesbury River and another as far south as Montague Island. All those traversing the coast and seaward should take care and be aware of the situation. Attached are some photos of the recovery of containers from the Hawkesbury.

07.01.2022 As if having your pride and joy ripped from its mooring and tossed onto the rocks isnt bad enough, the owner of this boat at Balmoral in Sydney says it was looted as well! Thieves stole a tender and the anchor that was helping secure it to the beach. Mongrels.

06.01.2022 BOATING RESTRICTIONS OFFICIALLY LIFTED AS FOLLOWS: As advised by NSW Maritime just now... "I am pleased to inform you that yesterday the NSW Minister for Health signed an Exemption to the Public Health Order (COVID-19) Restrictions on Gathering and Movement) Order (No 2) 2020.... This Exemption allows members of the same household to use their recreational vessel for all on-water activities even if the vessel does not allow for 4 square metres of space per person. In addition, this Exemption allows people (who are not part of the same household) to go recreational boating on NSW waterways where it is the skippers responsibility to ensure that, so far as reasonably practicable, each person on board maintains a physical distance of 1.5 meters. In line with the NSW Governments easing of COVID-19 restrictions this means that the previous rule where it was permissible only to use boats for exercise and individuals were required to maintain 4 square metres of space is no longer in place. Transport for NSW worked to ensure this Exemption to the Public Health Order was fast-tracked so that families could participate in boating for leisure and remove concerns about contravening the health orders. These previous restrictions, which came into effect as part of the Public Health Orders, meant some boat owners were at a disadvantage if they had a smaller boat. Commercial and charter vessels may continue to be operated under existing restrictions, as long as physical distancing is being followed by all on board. Transport for NSW advises that when passengers are onshore, it is important to not gather in public spaces such as boat ramps and wharves in groups of more than 10 people, unless they are members of the same household. Skippers must also remember their normal safety responsibilities apply, regarding safety equipment, alcohol consumption, keeping a proper lookout and proceeding at a safe speed. For the latest information on the Coronavirus outbreak and current restrictions, members of the community are encouraged to check the NSW Government website (http://nsw.gov.au) for regular updates.

06.01.2022 "The registration fees of boat owners built these boat ramps. There should be compensation by fee reimbursement if council wish to persist with the removal of the boat ramp." Do you agree that trailer boaters are getting a raw deal in NSW? Today is the deadline to have your say on Eurobodalla Councils proposal to remove the Clyde Street boat ramp, so dont waste your opportunity to let them know how much this means to you.

03.01.2022 WARNING: Councils issuing $114 fines for car/trailer parked in street for more than 1 hour. OK. So youve launched the boat at the local ramp and now its time to find a spot to park the car and trailer. But there are no spots handy next to the ramp, or the fee is too high, or the time limit for paid parking is not sufficient for your purposes. So you take the time to park your car somewhere safely on the street. But Council rangers see your car/trailer as a "long/heavy vehic...le" (measuring greater than 7.5m) and so they think youre fair game for a $114 fine if you leave your "long/heavy vehicle" parked on the roadside for more than 1 hour. This is what is happening in Hunters Hill Council, near Woolwich boat ramp. Others might follow suit too. As this rule is to manage the presence of large trucks in our streets, we think the Hunters Hill Council rangers are not playing fair. If you find yourself in this situation, it might be best to break-up the 7.5m into two parts, by disconnecting your trailer from the car. It could be a small task that saves you $114.

03.01.2022 Now isnt this a good idea... cameras at busy ramps to help boaters gauge conditions and congestion via a simple app on their phones. Do you think NSW should trial something like this?

03.01.2022 Scenes like this at Grotto Point today break our boating hearts. Anyone know what happened?

02.01.2022 TRAILER BOATERS BEWARE! THIS COULD BE COMING TO COUNCIL NEAR YOU! North Sydney Council is once again seeking to ban boat trailers with a new complaints policy that could make whole streets no-parking zones for boats, while leaving box trailers free to park almost anywhere. You can read their draft proposals and HAVE YOUR SAY via the link below. Trailer boat parking in the harbourside North Sydney area is already regulated with 28-day move-on laws under the Impounding Act an...d, as of 2019, on-street parking bans for non-motorised vehicles in certain areas - bans which the Council had to narrow in response to opposition from boat-owning residents. Responsible boat owners believe such restrictions are already more than adequate to resolve issues with hazardous or neglected trailers, if the Council had a genuine will to enforce them. Instead, the Council seems bent on regulating boat trailers out of existence under the guise of a complaints policy that amounts to a total betrayal of boat-owning residents. The BOA opposes the Councils move to minority-led bans on trailer boat parking. See more
