24.01.2022 Are you wearing the best lifejacket for your activity? When doing high-speed activities, such as towed water sports and jet skiing, a type 2 or 3 is preferred. The rules state a type 1, 2 or 3 can be worn - however a type 1 has neck support (designed to keep your head afloat) which can cause damage if entering the water at high speed. If you are on a kayak, it’s best to invest in kayak-specific lifejacket because these are designed not to inhibit your arms whilst paddling and... generally have some handy pockets to carry safety gear, snacks and water to keep you fuelled up and safe. 17.01.2022 Watch the wake! An incident occurred earlier this year when a ski boat was swamped by its own wake. The ski boat took three waves over the bow, causing the vessel to sink. Luckily the occupants were able to make use of their inflatable biscuit and lifejackets to safely make their way back to shore. Ski boats are designed to sit close to the water and can’t take too much water in before becoming unstable. Also be mindful of where passengers sit as some people have been effected or injured when sitting up front. East Coast Kayaking, Sandringham Melbourne has put together a short clip of a variety of paddle craft demonstrating how their instructors get back on board. Make sure you practise or consider attending a specialised course. The importance of learning to get back on: https://transportsafety.vic.gov.au//campai/prepare/onboard
