18.01.2022 It is important to know how to move the body correctly before we get in and out of a Yoga Asana. This is because the modern urban individual has generated its o...wn unique mobility patterns and compensatory alignments due to sedentary lifestyle, device over usage, improper foot wear, lack of rest, dehydration, lack of essential nutrients in diet and so on. . If the Asana practitioner does not learn safe functional mobility patterns, every Yoga Asana could create compensatory patterns in the body after a while. . The contemporary Yoga Asana teacher needs to guide the student keeping in mind anatomical compensations, personal limitations and functional usage of the Asana. . There is no movement that is a bad movement but there is definitely a safe range in which an individual can move in and out. This safe range depends on the capability and uniqueness of the participant’s body. . A prudent Yoga Asana teacher will always give consideration to the individuality of the student, their capabilities and limits so as to facilitate their journey at their own pace. . Such considerate and holistic view helps generate harmony in the body and create what the Hatha texts call ‘angapatava’, dexterity in the body. . . See more

13.01.2022 Happy Internacional Yoga Day !

12.01.2022 Yoga as a word is first observed in the Rigveda, 1500 BC. Yoga as a term denoting a technique is first observed in the Chandogya Upanishad, 700 BC. Yoga as a co...mplete system is first observed in the Katha Upanishad, 300 BC. Over last two millennia Yoga has guided seekers to go beyond limitations and suffering. Aligned with this goal, intellectual traditions like logic, ethics, metaphysics and epistemology, and cultural traditions like worship, pilgrimage and rituals evolved organically to create a profound body of knowledge. What happens to this age old body of knowledge called Yoga when we reduce it to a set of poses? If ‘Yoga is a physical practice’ narrative becomes the only narrative, what will happen to the ancient traditions and customs that have evolved over years? Will those traditions die a slow death the same way native customs died after being labelled primitive by the colonisers? Will Yogic intellectual traditions eventually be forgotten the way ancient knowledge of plant medicine was forgotten due to urban migration? I understand that over last 100 years Yoga has intermixed with other knowledge systems from around the world so much so that scholars have created a new typology called ‘Modern Yoga’, but does prefixing ‘Modern’ in front of Yoga give us the license to forget, disregard and even devalue the ancient Yogic tradition? (I see this trend more and more, especially on social media). Does merely throwing in a ‘Namaste’ at the start and an ‘Om’ at the end of the class make us acknowledge its roots? Don’t get me wrong, I am not against physical practice. I have been in the business of bodies for past 26 years and have worked with Asana all along. But, when 90% adverts in my feed only emphasize physical posturing with no acknowledgement of Yogic roots, it makes me wonder if we have killed the whole for its part. And let me tell you, this is not just a ‘western’ phenomenon, I see many Indian Yoga Teachers happily buying into the ‘Yoga is stretching’ narrative having conveniently ignored the entirety of the system. Every ancient tradition matures over a long time. It is the duty of the present generation to conserve these ancient knowledge systems. Somewhere, we, as Yogis, are archaeologists and one important aspect of our work is to conserve the ancient traditions by not only acknowledging them but also learning them from an authentic source and passing them on in all humility. I know many Yoga teachers out there doing inspirational Yogic work with sensitivity, acknowledging Yoga’s ancient roots and sharing Yoga holistically my salutations to such teachers. Let us keep reflecting on the above questions and find our own answers.
