25.01.2022 Tradies National Health Month runs all month and it is a great time to acknowledge our hard working tradies and to raise awareness of the health and injury risks affecting those who work in trade occupations. Working as a tradie is a physically demanding job and statistics show that the most common injury experiences by tradies is back pain. Other injuries include shoulder issues, usually from repetitive reaching and holding movements, knee injuries and ankle sprains. Physi...otherapists can help prevent and manage injuries and are here to help you develop and maintain your fitness and strength. Physios are also experts in movement, so if you are having pain or difficulty with certain tasks at work, contact us for a movement assessment. This can be done in a group or one on one, offsite or in our clinic.

23.01.2022 This weeks focus is on sitting how much do you sit? Research shows that adults spend more than half their waking hours sitting! Have a think about how long you have sat today whether it was eating meals, at your work desk, during the commute to work, in front of the TV or computer: it all adds up to hours per day. ... Now how does this relate to your heart? Research from the Heart Foundation shows that Adults who sit less through the day have a lower risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) If you watch less than 2 hours of television per day you are less likely to have type 2 diabetes, be obese or develop CVD If you manage to get in 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on most days of the week, you are classified as physically active New evidence suggests that regular interruptions in prolonged sitting (even standing up from your chair every 30 minutes) may help reduce your risk factors for developing CVD and diabetes. We are here to help you get moving, so if you have aches or pains that are stopping you from being active, get in touch for a consult.

23.01.2022 ** The human ACL has potential to heal, with blood vessels providing adequate supply to all kinds and sites of tears - Ferretti (2020) ** It has been pr...eviously understood that the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) never heals this is a comment that can be easily found with a cursory internet search on the topic. The belief was that the ACL is incapable of healing due to a poor blood supply, based on animal models (such as dogs), which did not incorporate the use of a knee brace with dynamic control, or a structured exercise program which both allow for early application of mechanical stress at physiological levels to the ligament. Studies are now showing, despite popular dogma, the human ACL has a high intrinsic healing capacity (Ihara and Kawano 2017, Marangoni et al 2018, Ferretti 2020). This is particularly evident when the knee is given at least 3 months to settle, no aggressive laxity tests like Pivot-shift are performed and graduated strengthening is applied to the knee to allow cross-bridge formation of collagen to occur between the 2 intervening ends of the ligament; the torn ACL also can attach to the PCL (Nguyen et al 2014, Lo et al 1999) Even if the ACL doesnt heal, for many patients rehabilitation and exercise ultimately becomes a permanent treatment, meaning they can return to high-level pivoting activities and sports, making the ligament essentially redundant. Global is also running a Live Zoom ACL tear Non-op Workshop on Sunday the 27th of September 2020 8:30AM-3:00PM AEST - Get tickets now to through this link https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/live-zoom-acl-tear-non-op-w Cant make this time? Last week we discussed how staying away from your workplace can have a serious impact on how successfully you return to your employment. So today lets discuss WHY the workplace is good for you. According to the research paper "Realising Health Benefits of Good Work" there are multiple factors in the workplace that contribute to good physical and mental health. Improving mental h...ealth, improving cognitive function, building higher self-esteem and stronger family relationships, creating better financial stability and increasing cardiovascular performance are just a few of the benefits that are listed in this article. (Feel free to look it up, or email us if you would like a copy) Now we can already hear some of you disagreeing with those findings, but stay tuned for next week when we give some hints and tips on making these benefits a reality in your workplace. Stay safe people !

21.01.2022 The best way to look after your heart is by having a healthy lifestyle! Some ideas to help you manage this are: Being physically active its never too late to start! Regular activity at an appropriate level for you is great for your heart health. Sitting less through the day and breaking up your sitting time can make a big difference little changes all add up! Enjoying a varied and healthy diet to help with blood pressure, weight and cholesterol is a great way to he...lp prevent and manage heart disease. Being smoke free - quitting smoking is one of the best moves you can make for heart health! Getting your blood pressure checked and treated if its too high or too low Managing diabetes having well controlled diabetes reduces the risk of a heart attack of stroke Looking after your mental health statistics show there is a greater risk of heart disease if you have depression, are socially isolated or do not have good social supports. Make time for family and friends. If you have questions about any of these ideas, talk to your appropriate health professional, whether that is your GP, physiotherapist, dietician or psychologist.

21.01.2022 FUN FACTS AND STATS: The last week of Occupational Rehabilitation is here - while we wait for the country to open up again, and our workplaces to return to normal, this is our chance to inspire you. All types of jobs make the world go round, and all types of jobs are going to be needed to reboot our country. However, this week we address the sedentary workplace. Some say sitting is the new smoking and is killing people faster than cancer ever could. That is a little bit extr...eme but does hold a grain of truth. Sedentary is not a way of life to embrace, but for some it is the only way to pay the bills, so how do we help these people stay healthy and pain free? The latest research has shown that regardless of how many minutes of exercise you get per day (whether its 15, 30 or 50) the consistency of physical activity is far more important than the duration, so let us explain. The more regularly the body moves, the more benefit it gets. Research has shown that the body is only capable of holding a position for 45mins before inflammation and irritation sets in, therefore if you are sitting at your desk for 3 - 4hours at a time then you are definitely pushing your body past its limits. We recommend that our sedentary workers make a habit of moving every 30mins, even if it is only in a small way, to avoid pushing limits. Our ideas include: stand to for the duration of a phone call, walk to refill your glass of water (or coffee), do 5 - 10 squats before you open that email, take the stairs in the morning, kick your legs under the desk, park a little further away from the door, go up and down on your toes while washing your hands ... little movements, but consistently ;)

20.01.2022 Great post by @rehabscience: ---------- "A great illustration from @honest_physio that helps address a very common clinical misconception about... the relationship between knee joint noise (crepitus) and the development of pathology. - Almost every day in the clinic, I meet someone who is concerned about a noise that their body is making. The knee is one of the most common areas of concern as the joint behind our kneecap (patellofemoral joint) commonly makes popping and clicking noises. - It is extremely important that people understand that noises from the knee are usually not associated with pathology and may actually be a sign of a healthy, well-lubricated joint. let’s be careful not to make people feel bad about their knee noise as it can negatively influence how they view their body! - So, if your knees are noisy and you don’t have pain, don’t worry about them. The noise is most likely due to the movement of fluid behind the kneecap and is not an indicator of a developing joint problem. Reference: Robertson CJ, et al. People’s beliefs about the meaning of crepitus in patellofemoral pain and the impact of these beliefs on their behaviour: A qualitative study. Musculoskelet Sci Pract. 2017. . #RehabScience" . 20.01.2022 National Diabetes Week Its estimated that 1.2 million Australians live with diabetes. National Diabetes Week is a fundraising event which helps to raise awareness and work towards prevention. Did you know diabetes... Is the leading cause of blindness in working age adults? Is a leading cause of kidney failure? Is the leading cause of preventable limb amputations? Increase a persons risk of heart attacks and stroke by up to four times? Its about time we took the time to better detect all types of diabetes. For type 1 diabetes, this means taking the time to learn the 4Ts (toilet, thirsty, tired, thinner) - the early warning signs of type 1 diabetes. For type 2 diabetes, this means taking the time to get checked. #NDW2020 #Itsabouttime

17.01.2022 BACK PAIN Do not let a healthcare practitioner, friend or the internet convince you that your back pain means you have a ‘bad’ back. Our spines are in...credibly resilient and back pain is often associated with factors outside of the spine itself (beliefs, emotions, stress, etc). Unfortunately, many people still believe that having pain means they are injured and are bound to have problems for life. Changing this belief is instrumental. _ This belief is unfortunately perpetuated by many medical, rehabilitation and fitness providers who have yet to study the intricacies of pain science and function from the standpoint that physical pain is completely a result of something being wrong or injured within the tissues of the physical body. _ In most cases, the remedy for low back pain is to simply trust that your back can become less irritable, which will decrease stress, fear and anxiety. Then, find movement/exercise that you enjoy and participate in it regularly. There is a ton of research to support exercise for back pain and no one magic bullet that works for everyone. Start experimenting and find what works for you. - Great picture by @brad_beer , reposted and text by Rehab Science! What do you think? Let us know! :) See more

15.01.2022 Hi guys! As we wrap up Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, we thought we would write a post about how physiotherapy plays a role in rehabilitating many types of pelvic floor issues. Today we are focusing on advice about having better bowel movements, by using correct body positioning. Bathroom 101: 1. Knees slightly higher than hips (feet resting on small stool, especially if you are shorter) 2. Lean forward and rest your elbows on knees... 3. Inhale to allow your belly to expand (big belly) 4. Keep your belly big, but start breathing normally 5. Tighten abdominal muscles (Belly Hard) to keep your belly big and wide 6. As you breath out, gently bulge down with your pelvic floor to expel stool 7. NEVER HOLD YOUR BREATH AND BEAR DOWN Why? This puts a muscle called puborectalis in a better position to relax and makes passing a bowel motion easier. For those of us who are anatomy minded, puborectalis loops around the rectum like a sling, that assist us to hold our bowel motions in. Its kind of like standing on a hose when we kink the hose, it stops water from running out as easily. When we pass a bowel motion, the puborectalis muscle relaxes (or the hose unkinks) and the angle of that muscle widens to allow stool to pass. Research shows that squatting or having our knees slightly higher than our hips widens the angle even more, making it easier for stools to pass. Fun fact: one study showed that having knees higher than hips when going to the toilet halved the time to pass a bowel motion! (Sikirov, 2003)

15.01.2022 Not all injuries are simple. Some people have co-morbidities that come with complications. Stay calm. You may just need a little extra time and patience.

15.01.2022 No better way to say it guys. Rehab never goes as planned. No point getting frustrated over it - just keep working hard, knowing that Recovery is within reach with every appointment made, step taken and exercise completed

15.01.2022 If you see Annie or Mitch hobbling around this week, know this is what they are going through

14.01.2022 Some facts about back pain

14.01.2022 We all want to come home safely from work each day, so become your workplace health champion and do something about it. It can be as simple as doing some stretches or warming up with your work mates at the beginning and end of the day. Or maybe your workplace can arrange for a physiotherapist to do a worksite risk assessment. Tune in next week for our final post for Tradies Health Month!

14.01.2022 We are designed to heal WHILE WE ARE MOVING Read this quote by the great Louis Gifford #PhysioNetwork #repost

14.01.2022 Is anyone else sick of Chris talking about tissue tolerance? Well here is a little picture to help explain exactly what he is talking about. Observe the tissue... tolerance level before injury, and how it sits below the peak of the mountain. This implies that when our bodies exceed their tissue capacity, it is dangerous and generally ends in injury. HOWEVER, observe the pain protection line. Your brain has set boundaries and mechanisms in place to warn you and keep you within your capacity. This is NORMAL and this is GOOD. After an injury, your body has become very sensitive to danger and your brain resets its boundaries and mechanisms. Meaning you experience pain MORE EASILY, and this is GOOD and this is NORMAL, because your brain is trying to keep you safe and give the tissue time to heal. But over time, you body needs to start pushing the pain protection boundary BACK UP to where it was. So even if you do get a little bit of pain while doing your exercises or returning to normal function, don't stress. Your pain is not equivalent to further tissue damage, it just means your brain is reacting to a potential threat to the healing tissues. In this scenario its okay to push into a little bit of pain, because you need to push those protection mechanisms BACK UP to normal. Makes sense right?

14.01.2022 Welcome to week two of Tradies National Health Month! To help you go home safe, well and ready for work we have posted a few tips to follow: Doing a few stretches at the beginning and end of a long day at work can help with back pain. Go back to the basics and make sure your lifting technique is on point! Whenever possible, use a trolley if available and ask a colleague to help out if an object is too heavy. Exercise! Tradies have a physically demanding job, so it c...an be hard to find the energy to exercise outside work, but to reduce our risk of injury we need to have some form of activity outside work that strengthens our bodies up. If you arent keen on hitting the gym, simple things like going for a walk, swimming or a bike ride are a great way to bring some variety into your day Posture being mindful of your body positioning and being in awkward positions for long periods can put extra pressure on your back. Be mindful of posture at work and try to vary body positions often Lifting correctly take a moment to plan your lift before you perform it can someone help you lift or is there a tool you can use? Using good lifting technique can help reduce the risk of injury Dont ignore pain! Seek help early if you start to get a niggle or ache, it is much better to catch an injury early or before it happens. Prevention is better than cure. See more

10.01.2022 Its estimated that 1.2 million Australians have some form of heart or vascular disease. Heart disease is still the number one cause of death among Australians according to a report by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), but its not all bad news there have also been significant gains in the fight against this condition. 09.01.2022 Each year Chronic Pain Australia, the national voice of people living with chronic pain, organises National Pain Week to champion the needs of the many Australians living with some form of chronic pain. Chronic pain is defined as persistent pain that impacts a persons quality of life and ability to work and socialise normally. Physiotherapists play a critical role in assisting people living with chronic pain to improve their quality of life by increasing their level of act...ivity and participation in the community. If you or someone you know has chronic pain, take the first step to improving quality of life by seeking help from an experienced physiotherapist today. Five facts about chronic pain: 1. Globally, lower back pain causes more disability than any other condition 2. Only about 1-5% of lower back pain is caused by serious disease or injury 3. Chronic pain is Australias third most costly health burden and the leading cause of early retirement and work absenteeism, costing the economy more than $73 billion per year 4. Levels of psychological distress are six times higher for those living with chronic pain, while 40% of sufferers report symptoms of anxiety and/or depression 5. Physios have unique skills to evaluate the biopsychosocial needs of patients in chronic pain conditions. (APA, 2019) #painweek2020 #chronicpain

08.01.2022 FUN FACTS AND STATS: Okay so if you havent already noticed, we are in the middle of a pandemic and a fair few people are out of work for a while. Because of this, our theme for this month is Occupational Rehabilitation! Some of our patients are currently not working due to business shutdown, quarantine OR injuries that have been sustained at work. While this is unfortunate and stressful, the research has actually shown that the longer you stay away from your workplace, the ...worse off you become. The numbers never lie - so lets take a look at them (remembering that these are reflective of work injuries and illness, not pandemics!). Did you know .... - that employees who stay away from the workplace for more than 20 days only have a 70% chance of successfully returning - that employees who stay away from the workplace for more than 45 days have an even lower 50% chance of successfully returning - that employees who stay away from the workplace for more than 70 days have an insanely low 35% chance of successfully returning Pretty crazy stuff. So please people, when all the crazy is over and you can return to work, stay there. Spending time away from your workplace is actually no good for you.

08.01.2022 And so our Mumma-to-be has finally decided, at 7 months along, to finally SLOW DOWN. As of the 1st of October, Annie will be dropping down to 4 days a week. She will be putting her feet up every Wednesday to help with that swelling As an additional condition, we have decided that she will no longer be accepting new clients after this time as well. But don't worry, the other three physios are working as hard as ever and more than willing to help out as much as possible!

03.01.2022 It is week two of Bowel Cancer Awareness Month and this time we are talking about the symptoms of bowel cancer - also known as colorectal cancer. Symptoms include: Unexplained weight loss / or losing weight without trying Blood in your bowel motion or in the toilet bowl... A persistent change in the frequency, amount, texture or shape of your bowel movements Severe pain in the abdomen or rectum A pain or lump in the anus or rectum It is important to note there are often no symptoms in the early stages of bowel cancer, which makes early screening crucial, especially if there is a family history. If you think you should be screened for bowel cancer contact your local GP if you believe you have current or recent symptoms, or if bowel cancer runs in your family. Australia has free test kits if you are over the age of 50. The Australian Governments National Bowel Cancer Screening Program currently provides a free FOBT kit and pathology to all Australians aged 50, 52, 54, 56, 58, 60, 62, 64, 66, 68, 70, 72 and 74. Screening kits usually arrive within six months of your birthday! Stay tuned for next weeks post on lifestyle changes that may reduce the risk of this cancer.
