15.01.2022 Veva lives with multiple sclerosis (MS), so working on her core strength is a priority during her physical therapy sessions with Maddie. MS can affect balance and mobility in a number of ways, causing difficulty with everyday activities such as climbing stairs or maintaining balance while reaching. Having a steady core helps stabilise the body and helps to maintain balance whilst moving a limb. Also, since people with MS often experience loss of bladder or bowel control,... strengthening the core helps to reduce these issues by restoring support to the pelvic organs and helping to control against leakage. Keep up the good work, Veva!

15.01.2022 Our modern lifestyles and the fact that many of us sit for extended periods every day leads to dysfunctions in movement, especially when it comes to the glutes and hips. The longer you sit, the more your hip and glute muscles won't be able to work optimally when you walk, run, jump, squat or lunge. As a result, your body will start to alter its biomechanics and creates compensation in its movement patterns, which can lead to tightness in the lower back, hips and k...nee pain. Activation exercises like this are designed to switch on and strengthen these weakened muscle areas, restore biomechanics and optimise movement. This single-leg hip extension is a progression from the regular hip extension. As you work through the reps, you should notice a burn in the glute of the lowered leg, as well as the piriformis a small muscle located deep in the buttock, behind the glute max.

13.01.2022 Is pain from osteoarthritis getting you down? Did you know that exercise is considered to be one of the most effective treatments for osteoarthritis and is recommended for all patients regardless of severity Individualised exercise can prevent and delay the onset of osteoarthritis, as well as reduce the pain and symptoms in even the most severe cases.... Weight gain (or the inability to lose weight) is one of the leading causes of pain with osteoarthritis and frequently patients are advised to lose weight before they will be considered eligible for a joint replacement. FACT: A 5-point reduction in BMI can shift a person from not being eligible for a joint replacement to not needing a joint replacement. That is the power of diet and exercise Read our blog below for more information on how to best manage your osteoarthritis pain. https://bodysmarthealth.com.au/exercising-with-osteoarthr/

07.01.2022 Calling all Aussie men! This Movember, it’s time for you to take stock of their health, even if you think you’re OK. Men often only visit their doctor when something’s seriously wrong, but it shouldn’t be that way. Taking a holistic and preventative health care approach is a much better way to manage your health. That means seeing your GP for a regular physical check-up as well as a mental health check-in and doing it before any serious symptoms arise. Physical ...and mental health go together and regular maintenance of both will ensure not only earlier detection, but diagnosis of many issues that go undetected. #movember2020

06.01.2022 Research shows exercise makes you happier than money https://www.businessinsider.com/exercise-makes-you-happie/

04.01.2022 Feeling blue? Research shows that people who exercise regularly have better mental health and emotional wellbeing, and lower rates of mental illness. Exercise is, in fact, recognised as an evidence-based treatment for mental health conditions. It helps reduce anxiety, depression, and negative mood and can also improve self-esteem and cognitive function.... When you engage in regular exercise, you release feel-good endorphins, including natural, cannabis-like brain chemicals that enhance your sense of well-being. You also take your mind off your worries so you can get away from the cycle of negative thoughts that feed depression and anxiety. If that’s not reason enough to get moving, you’ll also notice a host of other benefits such as improved sleep , stress relief, greater libido and weight reduction.

01.01.2022 Muscle rigidity and stiffness are common symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease, which can also affect a person’s ability to rotate their trunk and swing their arms while walking. This exercise focuses on trunk rotation and arm swinging at the same time. The movement is overexaggerated with the goal of improving walking pattern on land. Exercising in the hydrotherapy pool slows the movement down so there is a focus on control. The water resistance also helps to maintain or enhance muscular strength, even with gentle movements. Furthermore, buoyancy provides support to weak muscles for reassured balance and improved posture.
