23.01.2022 Do you suffer from rounded shoulders, back pain or stiffness from sitting at a desk? Want to improve your posture and reduce your chances of injury? This exercise is for you. The cable pull-apart helps strengthen the rhomboids, posterior deltoid and inferior traps to improve how the scapula (shoulder blade) is moving. By strengthening these muscles your body will be in a better position to help to stop your shoulders from dropping forwards and your posture from slumping. With stronger scapula muscles, you can also achieve greater distal strength. So, weather you play a racquet sport or you’re just trying to put your suitcase in an overhead compartment on a plane, scapula strength and mobility are key to preventing injury.
21.01.2022 If you’re over 50 and you don’t feel as strong as you used to, it’s not surprising. By the age of 70, the average adult has lost 25% of muscle mass due to sarcopenia the natural loss of muscle mass as we age. Without any kind of intervention, it can lead to frailty, increased risk of falls and loss of independence. But it’s not all bad news. Research has shown that strength training has the ability to reduce the impact of these changes in older adults. Specifically, ...it helps to: Prevent bone fractures Strength training helps to increase bone density and reduce the risk of breaks. * Increase muscle mass Any kind of exercise can help reverse the loss of muscle mass and build strength, but strength and resistance training are best. * Improve functional movement Building strength helps with everyday activities such as getting in bathtub and getting up from a chair. It also helps you retain your mobility, walk further and reduce your reliance on assistive devices such as canes and walkers. * Improve body composition Older adults tend to gain more fat as they lose muscle mass, putting them at risk of chronic illnesses. Strength training (along with cardio) helps to reduce unwanted weight gain. * Maintain good mental health As we age, we’re at greater risk of loneliness, social isolation, depression, and other mental health issues. By building strength, we can increase mobility, function and improve our overall health. This, in turn, boosts mood and overall quality of life. See more

18.01.2022 Pelvic pain is common during pregnancy. After all, ligaments are stretching, organs are moving around to make room for the growing uterus, and hormone levels are changing specifically oestrogen, progesterone and relaxin. As these hormones increase, the pelvic ligaments become soft and more relaxed and the joints become more mobile. Together with postural changes and the pressure of the growing baby , the pelvic joints can become inflamed and painful. You may need a per...iod of rest to settle your pain, however, it’s important to keep your core muscles strong, so after this initial rest, guided exercises are recommended. Need some advice? The women’s health exercise physiologists at BodySmart are equipped with specialised knowledge to ensure you can exercise safely throughout your and help prevent and manage issues such as pelvic pain.

12.01.2022 Calling all Aussie men! This Movember, it’s time for you to take stock of their health, even if you think you’re OK. Men often only visit their doctor when something’s seriously wrong, but it shouldn’t be that way. Taking a holistic and preventative health care approach is a much better way to manage your health. That means seeing your GP for a regular physical check-up as well as a mental health check-in and doing it before any serious symptoms arise. Physical ...and mental health go together and regular maintenance of both will ensure not only earlier detection, but diagnosis of many issues that go undetected. #movember2020

09.01.2022 Globally , men die on average 6 years earlier than women, and for reasons that are largely preventable. Which means that it doesn’t have to be that way: we can all take action to live healthier, happier and longer lives. Today marks the beginning of Movember a month that highlights the importance of men’s health, particularly in the areas of mental health, suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. To all the men out there, show your support by growing a mo in the month of November and raise funds and awareness for men’s health.
07.01.2022 Sound on ~ Paul’s been training 2-3 times a week at BodySmart since 2018. By combining resistance training and cardio, he’s realised great results with his weight loss and also boosted his confidence. People living with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), like Paul, generally exercise significantly less than their normally-developed peers, often because of limited motor functioning and low motivation. The result: poor health, including obesity and greater rates of depres...sion and anxiety. Exercise has been proven to help people with ASD improve their cardiovascular fitness, decrease bone and joint problems and even decrease their chances of depression. It can also help reduce stereotypic behaviours associated with ASD, such as hyperactivity and aggression. The exercise physiologists at BodySmart are highly skilled at training people living with ASD. We take a highly personalised approach, spending time to get to know each client individually and understanding what works for them. That’s why we have client’s like Paul who keep coming back for more!

Whilst men have 3 times greater rate of suicide than women. ... From the sparsest of whiskers to the thickest bushes, over 5 million individuals have chosen to raise funds for this worthy cause. But it doesn’t stop there. You may choose to host a small virtual gathering. Or perhaps walk 60km to commemorate the men lost to suicide ever hour, globally. Anything to help a fellow mate out! By taking part and promoting Movember, you will be helping prevent the premature deaths of men around the world. So proudly don the mo, walk the walk or even shed light about the importance of men’s health. It’s time to change the face of men’s health.
03.01.2022 Joint Pain? Poor Balance? Short of Breath? Have you tried Aquatic Therapy? The use of water to aid in the treatment of pain and chronic medical conditions can be traced right back to ancient civilisations. Today, aquatic therapy (also known as hydro-therapy) is used to treat and manage many conditions!... Aquatic therapy can help with: Pain from arthritis and other musculoskeletal concerns Improve neurological conditions Improve mobility and balance Help manage diabetes Improve respiratory concerns Improve kidney function Improve heart function Improve mental well-being So how can aquatic therapy help you? When standing in chest deep water you weigh approximately 30% less than you do on land! This means that when moving there is 46% less force through your hips 155% less force through your knees When we are in pain some of the shock absorbing muscles in our body become weak and ‘switch off’. The buoyancy that is provided by the water helps to decrease joint pain and switch these shock absorbing muscles back on. Aquatic therapy is very effective at rehabilitating injured or sore joints as it allows you to move through greater ranges of motion and complete more movement (pain free) than you could on land. It is important to mention aquatic therapy is not recommended in people with osteoporosis. Land/ gym-based exercise is most beneficial at improving bone density and should be completed with exercise physiologist supervision. See more
02.01.2022 It’s time to go balls out for Movember. Testicular cancer is one of, if not the most common cancer which is diagnosed in young men under the age of 40. For every day that passes, more than 2 Australian men are being diagnosed with this condition. Although not as widespread as other male health problems (e.g. depression, prostate cancer), there is not enough awareness towards this life-changing condition. Testicular cancer does not discriminate. It doesn’t matter whet...her you’re fit or healthy, there are no known causes or links. One of the most important ways to help men fight against testicular cancer is early detection. Being aware about what goes on down there can ensure early treatments and better outcomes. As a result, the signs and symptoms that you need to be aware of includes: * Heaviness in the scrotum * Constant ache or pain in the lower abdominal region * Back pain * Bigger and tender breast tissue To help keep your jewels in check, it’s important to perform your own testicular examination once a month. You may want to use a mirror to see any changes in appearance. Using both hands, gently roll the testicle between your thumb and fingers. Make sure you’re feeling around the whole surface area to avoid missing anything suspicious. During the examination, try to identify any swelling, discomfort , asymmetry or unusual lumps. If you suspect any abnormalities, it’s essential that you visit your GP for a proper assessment. Fortunately, the survival rate of testicular cancer is around 98% within the first 5 years of diagnosis. So don’t be afraid to get handsy and seek professional advice as soon as possible. Spreading the awareness about testicular cancer is necessary all-year-round. However, during the month of Movember, educating young men about taking action early is a valuable lesson in all walks of life. You too can join in Movember’s global effort to improve the health and wellbeing of men. To take part in this initiative, simply share this post or tag a man who would appreciate this. #movember #goballsout #gethandsy
