24.01.2022 How can a physiotherapist help with mobility ? Mobility is the ability to stand up and walk in a range of environments. It can deteriorate with age and certain health conditions. A well-designed exercise program from a BodySmart physiotherapist, however, can help you regain your ability to walk independently and safely. Firstly, we’ll assess your movement to determine if your muscles are weak, tight or not working as well as they should be. We’ll then give you... strengthening, flexibility and balance exercises for your muscles and teach you the right pattern of moving again. If you could benefit from a walking aid perhaps to prevent compensation or a limp we can help you order the right one and teach you how to use it. Our goal is not to keep you coming back, but to give you the tools to help you regain your mobility, strength and independence and prevent future injuries or falls.

24.01.2022 Get moving’ is this year’s theme for Veteran’s Health Week (16-24 Oct). We all know how important physical activity is for our health, including our mental health, and veterans stand to benefit immensely from increasing their physical activity levels. Physical activity doesn’t have to be high-intensity or competitive to be effective. It just has to meet your goals, lifestyle, and abilities. Some veterans may prefer higher intensity activities, while others may ...prefer less intensive activities. Exercise intensity should be considered and remain consistent with your goals and consider your functional limitations and personal preference. No matter what activity you choose, the main thing is that you GET MOVING on a regular basis in something enjoyable and rewarding. At BodySmart, we understand that veterans are a diverse group of individuals with different ages, genders, types of illnesses and injuries. That’s why we develop tailored programs to meet the needs of each individual. Our veterans come to us to improve their physical health, and stay because of the improved sense of wellbeing and happiness that comes from exercising in a warm and welcoming environment that fosters caring connections. Here’s a shout out to all our amazing vets who make BodySmart a better place to work! Keep up the good work and encourage your mates to get moving!

22.01.2022 Reformer pilates can often be perceived as gentle exercise, however, when put into certain positions, under higher loads and intensities, it can be used as a great way to complement other forms of training. With an increased focus on core strength and proper muscle engagement, reformer pilates has been proven to improve athletic performance, injury recovery, flexibility, balance, muscle power and promote weight loss. Many professional athletes take advantage of the benefits of reformer pilates and make it a regular part of their strength and conditioning regime. We offer reformer pilates at all our clinics! Get in touch with us today as to how you can get involved.

20.01.2022 Today is world cancer day. For our team of dietitians at BodySmart, we feel grateful to be able to help clients, and their families through challenging times by ensuring our clients are eating as well as they can be. Today, we thought we would discuss and break some myths in relation to diet and cancer: MYTH 1: Sugar feeds the cancer cells, causing them to grow faster.... Carbohydrates, which get broken down into sugar are used as the primary fuel source for all cells in the body, including cancer cells. If the sugars are not available to fuel the cancer cells, they will use other forms of energy such as protein (in the form of muscle mass) or fat (including body fat stores). This means that starving your body from carbohydrates will not starve the cancer cells. It is more likely to have a negative impact on your body by reducing your muscle and fat stores. MYTH 2: There are special diets out there that will help cure cancer. This one carries on from our previous point - Due to the myth surrounding carbohydrates, it has been suggested that following a ketogenic diet (a diet very low in carbohydrates), will help cure cancer. There is currently no evidence to suggest that a ketogenic diet would be beneficial in treating cancer and should not be trialed. MYTH 3: Acidic foods increase cancer cell growth While cancer does thrive in an acidic environment, the consumption of either acidic or alkaline foods will not alter your body’s PH levels. The body will always control the pH levels regardless of dietary intake. There is no evidence to suggest that consuming an alkaline diet will reduce cancer growth or affect body pH levels. There is so much information on the internet and often it can be difficult to determine what advice will actually benefit you. We would always recommend you get your dietary advice from trusted health professionals, such as our Dietitians Georgie and Jordan. To book in to see them, call 1300 630 204.

20.01.2022 Calcium is an important nutrient for maintaining strong teeth and bones. Our teeth and bones act as the storage units for calcium, meaning if our calcium intake is low over time, these stores can reduce, weakening both our teeth and bones. This puts us an increased risk our breakages. For most people, the easiest way to include calcium in the diet is through dairy products, however for those that can’t tolerate these foods, there are also alternatives. Some food options high... in calcium include: Dairy products - milk, yoghurt and cheese Canned salmon and sardines Almonds, dried figs and dried apricots Leafy green vegetables spinach, bok choy, broccoli, cabbage Soy and Tofu Fortified milk alternatives, cereals, breads and juices.

19.01.2022 How important is maintaining a neutral spine?! 'Neutral spine' is the optimal alignment and position for your neck and back for minimising the amount of stress and strain experienced day-to-day. Often we have clients come in with persistent hip, back and neck pain, attributed to inappropriate loading of these structures throughout the day. Commonly we see simple activities such as sitting, standing or walking completed with compensatory movement patterns or inappropriat...e muscle recruitment, sequencing or innervation. Exercises that promote the correct muscle recruitment patterns for a neutral spine in functional positions can be extremely beneficial for those suffering with lower back pain. The reformer is a great platform to help re-engage our intrinsic support systems that are often lost through our day to day lives especially for those who spend large amounts of time seated or at a desk. These movements promote the use of our deeper stabilising muscles such as the transverse abdominus and multifidis - essential supports for maintaining correct posture and pain free range of motion. Pilates movements such as this help teach our bodies the principles of alignment, co-ordination and centering whilst also emphasising the importance of correct breathing patterns through motion. - Here we have Redcliffe client Shaen taking on that advice and keeping back pain at bay by performing some advanced reformer pilates with physiotherapist Luke.

16.01.2022 Multiple Sclerosis & Exercise Therapy Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease characterised by areas of demyelination throughout the brain and spinal cord. This directly affects the central nervous system and subsequent structures responsible for a variety of processing sensory information (taste, touch, smell, hearing, sight) as well as body functions and coordination required for movement. There are four common types of MS categorised by the way and seve...rity the disease acts upon the body. These are Relapsing-remitting MS (temporary periods of relapse in symptoms onset and exacerbations), Secondary-progressive MS (steady progression of symptoms over time), Primary-progressive MS (Slow worsening of condition from the beginning with nil relapses of flare ups) and Progressive-relapsing (steady worsening of condition with acute relapses however nil remission). MS presents with a high level of variance in presentation and symptom severity with some factors like MS related fatigue and pain being very individualised to the person and often poorly understood. However with the guidance of industry professionals a tailored exercise program can: * Improve pain management * Reduce general fatigue * Improve symptoms of anxiety / depression * Improve muscular strength and cardiorespiratory fitness * Improve sleep * Improve bowel and bladder function * Reduce the risk of secondary complications associated with the movement restrictions and limitations often causing a sedentary behaviour. The overarching goal of using exercise as medicine for MS is to slow the decline of the condition and maximise on each person's physical ability, quality of life and independence.

16.01.2022 Balance and joint proprioception is the understanding of where our body is in space while performing dynamic movement tasks without the reliance on our visual feedback loops and supports . Here we have Exercise Physiologist Bridget challenging Alex’s balance while on the Bosu ball. Bridget has implemented a ball catch and throw into the activity to increase the decision making and reaction time required by Alex, removing the visual feedback he receives from watching his... foot position. Over the last year Alex's program has included exercises to challenge his proprioception and body awareness, hand eye coordination, trunk stability and dynamic balance which helps him walk on uneven ground and become more confident on his feet during ADL’s. - As you can see his hard work is definitely paying off!

12.01.2022 When our NDIS clients smile like this, we know we’re doing something right! It’s easy to think that physical therapy for people with disabilities is hard work and something they want to avoid, but we’ve found that the opposite is true. In addition to its well-recognised health benefits, research shows that physical therapy enhances quality of life and happiness in young people with disabilities.... At BodySmart, our physical therapists combine formal assessments with play-based therapy to gain insights into your child’s functional abilities and areas for improvement. Not only do we work to improve their strength, motor skills and cardiovascular fitness, but we make sure that they have fun while they’re doing it. When our clients are happy, we're happy!
