25.01.2022 Beauty from within with CoQ10 A secret every woman wants to know: a mere 150 mg of CoQ10 may improve the appearance of wrinkles around the eyes and face. When a group of people with an average age of 53 were prescribed placebo, CoQ10 50 mg, or CoQ10 150 mg daily for 12 weeks, those given CoQ10 demonstrated improvements in skin smoothness, firmness, elasticity and skin protection against seasonal changes, with higher doses producing more noticeable benefits. Already a well-established as a topical anti-ageing agent, it appears beauty does also come from the inside out. Zmitek, K et al. The effect of dietary intake of coenzyme Q10 on skin parameters and condition: Results of a randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind study.Biofactors. 2016. Aug 22. doi: 10.1002/biof.1316.

23.01.2022 Brain-Gut Axis or Is It Gut-Brain Axis? Classically, conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and functional dyspepsia (FD), collectively known as functional gastrointestinal disease (FGID), have been considered as braingut conditions, meaning the psychological symptoms come before the gut symptoms. Researchers recently tested this theory in a prospective random Australian population study. ... They found that one-third of the individuals with anxiety and depression at baseline developed a FGID at the one-year follow-up. Interestingly, two-thirds of the people with pre-existing FGID, but without mood disorders, had developed anxiety or depression at follow-up. The authors concluded: While brain-gut pathways are bidirectional, a major subset begin with gut symptoms first and only then psychological distress develops, implicating primary gut mechanisms as drivers of the gut and extra-intestinal features in many cases. Evidence that independent gut to brain and brain to gut pathways operate in the irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia: a 1 year population based prospective study. 21.01.2022 Fish oil may reduce bowel cancer deaths A recent observational study may encourage further research into the correlation between fish oil intake and bowel cancer mortality, with researchers finding that high omega-3 intake may lower the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC) deaths. The results were from data analysis of two large cohort studies with a 10-year follow-up, the Nurses Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study.... Those who had increased their omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) intake by at least 150mg per day after colorectal cancer diagnosis were 70% less likely to have died from the cancer than those who increased their intake by less than 20mg. Those consuming at least 300mg per day were 41% less likely to die; however, this result was not statistically significant. Additionally, omega-3 intake was not associated with a reduction in all-cause mortality. The authors concluded that high marine omega-3 PUFA intake after CRC diagnosis is associated with lower risk of CRC-specific mortality. Increasing consumption of marine omega-3 PUFAs after diagnosis may confer additional benefits to patients with CRC. M, Zhang X, Meyerhardt JA, et al. Marine w-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid intake and survival after colorectal cancer diagnosis. Gut 2016;doi:10.1136/gutjnl-2016-311990.

20.01.2022 Gut Bacteria and Their Skinny Secret: While exercise, a healthy diet and adequate sleep are all imperative for maintaining a healthy weight, evidence has now re...vealed a new player in the weight game your gut bacteria! This collection of 37 trillion organisms (mainly bacteria) within your digestive tract is known as your microbiome, and strongly dictates how your body regulates and maintains its weight. A healthy microbiome for a happy waistline? Fascinating! Your Microbiome: Fat Burning or Storing? While each persons microbiome is unique, clear trends show the gut bacteria in a lean person is different to that in an overweight person. A healthy microbiome in a lean individual is defined by having a diverse range of beneficial bugs, and containing very few bad microbes that disrupt the health of the gut. Once the microbiome is in this healthy state, these good bacteria send messages to the body to maintain its weight within a healthy range, hence helping to prevent weight gain. For more about the role of the microbiome, fat burning bugs, Bifidobacterium animalis ssp lactis (B-420), key diet and lifestyle strategies and making your microbiome worth its weight, continue reading the Wellness Review: http://bit.ly/2DAZOPr

17.01.2022 Vitamin C, still a winter favourite for the common cold. For those of you who swear by vitamin C for the common cold, you might be on the right track according ...to a new study published in July 2018. A Meta-Analysis of 9 randomized controlled trials on the effects of Vitamin C on the common cold found the combination of supplemental and therapeutic doses of vitamin C is capable of relieving chest pain, fever and chills, as well as shortening the time of confinement indoors and mean duration. The significance of this Meta-Analysis provides evidence that extra doses of vitamin C could benefit some patients who contract the common cold despite taking daily vitamin C supplements. While this research shows promise to reduce cold symptoms, it is still important you always seek the advice of your healthcare practitioner before taking any supplementation. 13.01.2022 VITAMIN D: TRANSFORMING COOKED LOBSTERS INTO COOL CUCUMBERS A day at the beach got you looking like a lobster? Combatting sunburn with high dose vitamin D may leave you feeling cool as a cucumber, according to a new double-blind placebo-controlled trial. Twenty study participants received 50,000, 100,000 or 200,000 IU of vitamin D or placebo one hour after their inner arm was sunburnt by a UV lamp. When examined 24, 48, 72 hours and 1 week later; those who consumed the hig...hest doses showed less skin inflammation 48 hours post-burn. Participants with the highest blood levels of vitamin D (equivalent to 100 nmol/L) had less skin redness and a spike in gene activity relating to skin repair. This early stage research doesnt mean we should stop holding onto our hats, but is a pertinent reminder that all the cool kids have healthy vitamin D levels! 09.01.2022 Sun of A Beach For MS Minimising the risk (and relapses) of multiple sclerosis (MS) might be as simple as correcting vitamin D deficiency. Insufficient levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 during pregnancy has been shown to increase the risk of developing MS in the offspring almost two-fold; while low vitamin D has also been linked to relapse in diagnosed MS patients. Even causative environmental factors that lead to low vitamin D status such as latitude, season of birth, proximi...ty to the coast and sunshine hours have been linked with MS incidence rates. Whether it be through sunshine or supplementation, vitamin D exposure is a protective key for MS! Munger KL, Aivo J, Hongell K, et al. 07.01.2022 Mothers microbiota may affect foetal immune system Colonisation of an infants microbiome shapes and develops the immune system; however it is unknown if the mothers microbiota plays a role. In an experimental study, researchers sought to find out the effect of the maternal microbiome on the foetal immune system during gestation, through the study of microbe-free pregnant mice. ... These mice were temporarily colonised with E. coli, which was engineered so the mothers would be germ-free again around the time they gave birth. They found that the offspring of these mice had more innate lymphoid and mononuclear cells in their intestines compared to mice born to microbe-free pregnant mothers, with increased gene expression for cell division and differentiation, mucus and ion channels, and metabolism and immune function. Some of these effects were dependent on maternal antibodies that potentially retain microbial molecules and transmit them to offspring during pregnancy and lactation. The colonised offspring were better able to avoid inflammatory responses to microbial molecules and penetration of intestinal microbes. American Association for the Advancement of Science. Moms microbes influence her offsprings immune system, mice study shows. 04.01.2022 New evidence: ADHD linked to prenatal use of paracetamol Generally regarded as safe during pregnancy, paracetamol is one of the most commonly used pain medications. However, animal studies have shown its use may affect neurodevelopment and cognitive function and disrupt brain derived neurotropic factor (BDNF). Human research also highlights potential risks of increased hyperkinetic disorders and ADHD type behaviour in children when used in pregnancy, although other behavioura...l or social factors were not accounted for. Considering these potential confounding factors, a 2016 longitudinal study of 7796 mothers has revealed that this pharmaceutical, taken prenatally, may increase the risk of multiple behavioural difficulties in the offspring. Use in the second (18 weeks) and third (32 weeks) trimesters of pregnancy significantly increased the risk of conduct problems and hyperactivity symptoms in the children. The effects were greater in the third trimester, with the added risks of emotional symptoms and higher total difficulty scores. No adverse effects were seen when paracetamol was taken postnatally or by partners. Stergiakouli E, Thapar A, Davey Smith G. Association of acetaminophen use during pregnancy with behavioral problems in childhood: evidence against confounding. JAMA Pediatr 2016;doi:10.1001/jamapediatrics.2016.1775.

02.01.2022 Poor vitamin B12 status early in life detrimental to development Insufficient vitamin B12 levels in infancy (between two and 12 months) has been linked to poor neurodevelopment in young children up to five years old. Vitamin B12 is an important vitamin for brain development. Plasma cobalamin levels where checked in infancy, along with total homocysteine and methylmalonic acid (MMA); both indicators of poor vitamin B12 status. At five years of age developmental assessments ...and cognitive function were measured in the same 320 children. Results of this study indicated that low vitamin B12 status in infancy was associated with poor development and compromised performance on social perception tasks and visuospatial abilities at five years of age. Many of the children didnt present with severely low vitamin B12 status, but rather had sub-optimal levels needed for optimal growth and development. Kvestad I, Hysing M, Shrestha M, et al. Vitamin B-12 status in infancy is positively associated with development and cognitive functioning 5 y later in Nepalese children. Am J Clin Nutr 2017 Mar; doi: 10.3945/ ajcn.116.144931

01.01.2022 Struggling to keep excess weight off? It might be your Set Point! Losing weight can be challenging and many dieters gain back the weight they lose. In fact, 80% of lost weight is typically regained after five years. Research suggests that people who are overweight and obese have a higher body weight set-point, compared to lean individuals. ... What is the body weight set point? Our bodies have a built in set of scales which use physiological mechanisms to defend and maintain a weight set-point. As weight is lost, appetite increases and energy expenditure decreases, making us eat more and move less. Lowering the set-point helps to lose weight and maintain lost weight more easily. Contact Body Belief Therapies today and find out if your set point needs adjusting.
