24.01.2022 Something For Nothing??? Following on from my last post, here is a quick check list to ask yourself, Does the exercise get you closer to your goals? Can you complete the movement correctly (proper form) to get the benefit? Can you complete the movement pain free?... If all of these answers are yes, then you have selected, or your trainer has selected the correct exercise. Now ask yourself does this apply to every exercise in your program................. 16.01.2022 Everything you do in your training program should have a reason. The same goes if you have a personal trainer, if they can't explain the exercise and why you are doing it, maybe it doesn't belong in your program. I see too many people "doing stuff" because it looks cool or they seen someone else do it. MY personal philosophy is that if I can't justify an exercise in a routine, it shouldn't be part of the routine.
15.01.2022 The guys at painscience really do put out some good material, this is one such article. I have been meaning to post this for a while as I have been talking with someone about exactly this.....

13.01.2022 SPICE IT UP! During the Middle Ages, spices like pepper and nutmeg were so valuable that they were worth more than gold! Even though their monetary value is a lot lower these days, they are still equally incredibly beneficial for our bodies! Adding spices to your meals enhances the nutritional value without having to add sugar, sodium or fat. Just be careful to avoid spice mixes that contain the words natural flavors. (no one ever knows what that means- and it’s not we...ll regulated.) Your challenge this week is to add 3 extra spices into your food this week. Here are a few great options that are incredibly good for you: 1. Turmeric is a yellow-orange colored spice commonly used in Indian dishes. Its active ingredient - curcumin is known to reduce inflammation in the body, improve the effectiveness of chemotherapy in cancer patients, and is suggested as a treatment for patients with depressive disorders - it can boost production of feel-good hormones such as serotonin, which helps ease depression and stress. 2. Cinnamon is a uniquely aromatic spice with a sweet, woody flavor. It’s rich with natural antioxidants such as polyphenols and can actually help lower blood sugar levels. Cinnamon even outranks some of Superfoods in antioxidant activity. 3. Garlic is praised for its potent smell and strong flavor, and is amazing for more than just keeping the vampires away. Garlic has been used to fight cancer, infections, and even a common cold! When used long-term, garlic has been shown to reduce total cholesterol and triglyceride levels, which helped many people who were at risk for cardiovascular illnesses. 12.01.2022 Do you drink tea? How about herbal tea? Packed with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, herbal teas are a natural way to start 2016 off with a healthy start. Herbal teas are not only delicious and relaxing, but they can help with everything from detoxifying your body to boosting your energy levels. By drinking tea, you are providing your body with much-needed hydration, which most people forget to monitor during cold, winter days. Tea can relieve insomnia, calm an upset sto...mach, and help fight viruses and infections. Teas also have been proven to help protect against cancer, heart disease and diabetes; encourage weight loss, lower cholesterol and promote mental alertness. They are chock full of healthy antioxidants. If you’re just getting started here are a few herbal tea recommendations: Chamomile flower tea is known for its soothing and relaxing effect, and is a great source of Magnesium. Peppermint tea soothes the digestive track, and helps with nausea and indigestion. 12.01.2022 Interesting read. I know when I have been on night shift, there is nothing more frustrating than looking at the clock every 20 minutes and thinking, "I have to be up for work soon".
11.01.2022 Operation TFW gym refit under way!!!!! Trying to upgrade gym and not interfere with clients training routines is a bit tricky. Can't wait to see the end result!!!
09.01.2022 Usually some BCAA's and Protein via a shake. At the moment I am doing a clean eating detox, so shakes are out and I am having some carrot, celery and almond butter.

09.01.2022 How do you measure your metabolic workouts? This has been an issue that has been bothering me for a while now. The days of metabolic sessions that result in people vomiting or thinking they have been hit by a truck are over! I have always monitored my clients closely when performing intense metabolic sessions and really don't believe in pushing anyone to this point. Is there any advantage in screaming at someone, " YOU CAN DO IT, JUST A BIT MORE" when clearly they can't? The majority of people don't need this and it just reinforces negative associations with metabolic or cardio training. So how do you manage it??? How do you set the parameters of metabolic work? Better still, how do you do it in a group setting, where everyone has a different response to the exercises?
09.01.2022 If ever I am struggling for a bit of motivation, this video by Martin Rooney really gets me fired up........... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNhOK3eUeqk

05.01.2022 As always a great article from Todd Hargrove. Well worth the 5 minutes to read!!
04.01.2022 I am often asked questions about the best time to do Cardio (which I think is a pretty old fashioned term, I much prefer the term Metabolic Training)? ANYTIME................... One of the most common theories is that doing Metabolic training first thing in the morning on a an empty stomach burns more calories? I have always doubted the mechanisms behind this theory and have never really advocated either way. To me personally, I think if you can do some form of Metabolic trai...ning at least 3 times a week, regardless of whether you do it in a fasted state or not, you are winning. Some people prefer to train fasted, that is fine, some people can't fit it in at that time of the day/night. The big thing is that you actually do it :) As for the theory of burning more calories while training fasted, here is a study that a couple of real experts (Brad Schoenfeld and Alan Aragon) published recently....... 03.01.2022 Today we will look at just one of the many reasons we need to sleep!!! Getting plenty of sleep will help you maintain your weight.and conversely, lack of sleep can cause increased weight gain. There are many reasons, but one of them is a hormone called GHRELIN. In a nutshell, the more ghrelin you have, the hungrier you are. When you don't get enough sleep, ghrelin levels go up. Result: people who are tired are just plain hungrier - and they seem to crave high-fat and high-calorie foods!
