23.01.2022 R U OK? Being a new mum is hard. Hormones, lack of sleep, navigating breastfeeding and recovering from birth can all take a toll on mental health. If you know a new mum who might be struggling or need extra support, take the time to ask if they are okay. That conversation could change, or even save, their life. 15.01.2022 REAL TALK with @drkamillaholst HOW I REALLY LOOK vs. HOW I FEEL INSIDE! What I really look like when pumping out versus how I feel inside and wish I looked like A Divine goddess ... My boobs might have gone up to an F cup after having a baby resembling the udder of a milking cow and will never be the same as before, but they are the source of the best nutrients my baby can receive and the fact that Im able to give that to him despite my hard journey into motherhood makes me so grateful. When all the Doctors told me to stop breastfeeding and just take a pill to stop my milk supply I refused. What helped me through was using @bodyicewoman heat pads 15 minutes before pumping and during pumping to help clear my engorged milk ducts. That really soothed me (gift ) And Im also lucky to have a portable Freestyle breast pump from @medela_us that was the only way for me to get my breastmilk out when I suffered from multiple cases of mastitis due to a hospital bacteria and couldnt latch him directly on my breast. NOTE: no matter how you feed your baby, youre still a good mum regardless of how you do it. 11.01.2022 Preparing for your bundle of joy Having a baby (especially your first) can feel like a huge leap into the unknown. It's hard to predict all the ways your life will change, but one thing's for certainyour life will change. Here are some tips to ensure you are ready and supported for life as a new mum:... Cut yourself some slack - The perfect parent doesn't exist, so don't let others' ideas or Instagram lives overtake your own maternal instincts to keep your baby happy and healthy. Especially with breastfeeding, new mums can put pressure on themselves to always get it right and it isn't always as easy as you might think. For additional breastfeeding support try our ice and heat packs to relieve and soothe discomfort from breastfeeding. Take care of yourself while pregnant - During pregnancy, your body is working overtime; physical fatigue can worsen the symptoms of emotional overload. Spend at least a few minutes every day to nurture yourself, get lots of sleep, take walks and remember to enjoy this journey. Manage relationship stress - The changes of pregnancy and parenthood can cause relationship stress as you try to sort out your new life and roles. Be patient with yourself and your partner and remember that the reason that you created your new life comes from your love for one another. Use your support network - Accept help from friends and family when you need it, and remember to continue to do the things that you enjoyed pre-baby. Prepare for your post-natal recovery- Everybody has a different journey after birth and it's important to remember to be patient and give your body what it needs to heal. We are here to support you with our Maternity Care Pack - https://bodyice.com/products/maternity-care . . . . . #BodyICE #BodyICEwoman #newbornbubble #breasticepack #hospitalbagessentials #pregnancy #healthypregnancy #maternalhealth #womenshealth #breastfeeding #childbirth #motherhood #2020baby #newborn #icepack #birthessentials #pregnancyessentials #birthplan
10.01.2022 CAESAREAN - GOING HOME After a c-section, your body will need additional time to heal. This means that you might need extra support to help care for yourself and your newborn. Here is what to expect when you come home after a caesarean: ... LOCHIA - This is the bleeding and discharge after delivery. It may last up to 6 weeks and will slowly become less red, then pink, and then will have more of a yellow or white color. INCISION - At first, your cut incision will be raised slightly and pinker than the rest of your skin and might appear puffy. Any pain should decrease after 2 or 3 days, but your cut will remain tender for up to 3 weeks or more. Over time, your scar will become thinner and flatter and will turn either white or the color of your skin. MEDICATION - Most women need pain medicine for the first few days to 2 weeks. Ask your provider what is safe to take while breastfeeding. CARE - If you go home with a dressing (bandage), change the dressing over your cut once a day, or sooner if it gets dirty or wet. You may remove your wound dressing and take showers if stitches, staples, or glue were used to close your skin. Your midwife or doctor will advise when to stop dressing the wound. CLEANING - Keep the wound area clean by washing it with mild soap and water. You don't need to scrub it. Often, just letting the water run over your wound in the shower is enough. DO NOT soak in a bathtub or spa, or go swimming, until your provider tells you it is OK. In most cases, this is not until 3 weeks after surgery. STRIPS - If strips (Steri-Strips) were used to close your incision do not try to wash off the Steri-Strips or glue. It is OK to shower and pat your incision dry with a clean towel. They should fall off in about a week. If they are still there after 10 days, you can remove them, unless your provider tells you not to. Our BodyICE Woman perineum strip can be used to soothe your incision area (used warm or cold) and encourage healing: www.bodyice.com/products/perineum-strip . . . . . #BodyICE #BodyICEwoman #backpain #backpaininlabour #labourtips #caesarean #caesareanrecovery #csectionrecovery #labouressentials #hospitalbagessentials #pregnancy #maternalhealth #childbirth #motherhood #2020baby #newborn #icepack #birthessentials #pregnancyessentials

07.01.2022 WHAT IS LINEA NIGRA?? Ever wondered about the dark vertical line which often appears on the abdomen during pregnancy? This is called Linea Nigra (Latin for 'black line') and is occurs for around 75% of expectant mums. We actually always have this line that runs down our abdomen, but we just don't notice it. It is usually called the Linea Alba or 'white line.' During pregnancy, the hormones (oestrogen, in particular, affects melanocyte-stimulating hormone) darken the pigm...entation of the Linea Alba, causing it to become darker and more visible, hence Linea Nigra. For some expectant mammas, the Linea Nigra shows up as a faint line and others it is much darker. This may be due to your natural skin tone or sun exposure that casues pigmentation. Linea Nigra doesn't affect your baby at all, it's just the surface of the skin and in most cases, it resolves after the baby is born. 04.01.2022 VIRTUAL BABY SHOWER IDEAS If you've decided on a Virtual Baby Shower, here are some planning and gift ideas to get the party started! GIFTS- Pre-order gifts online so that Mum can still open them with everyone.... THEME - Choose a cute theme to get into the festive spirit, maybe everyone wears a funny hat or make it a tea party theme to share the moment together. TECH - Make sure you do a test run of the virtual meeting platform, and that everyone is comfortable with the program (hello Zoom tutorials!) SCHEDULE - Create a guideline and timeline, including speeches, gift opening and games, to keep things moving. It doesn't have to be too strict but it helps to keep the event running smoothly. GAMES - Some of our favourite Virtual Baby Shower games are: Guess the Number. The host holds up a jar filled with sweets (M&Ms, jelly beans, etc) and asks guests to guess how many are inside. Name That Baby Song. The host plays different nursery rhymes or popular baby songs and guests try to guess the name as quickly as they can. Who's That Baby? Before the call starts, ask guests to email photos of themselves as babies to the host. The host shares them with the group and everyone tries to guess who is who. SHARE THE LOVE! We'd love to hear your Virtual Baby Shower stories, don't forget to tag us in your posts and stories! 03.01.2022 Repost from this beautiful mama @mrsconnolly__ who shares her birth and breastfeeding journey with us I breastfed Harper for just over a year and it was definitely an emotional journey! Cluster feeding in the early weeks killed me and nearly made me give up! I was so lucky to have amazing support around me, I pushed though it and Im so grateful I did because we went on to have such a beautiful journey. There are many positives to breastfeeding, I find it so beautiful an...d just amazing how the female body works, between growing a human, birthing them and how your boobs turn into this crazy milk bar (I swear Xavier looks at me like tits on legs sometimes ) But breastfeeding also has its dark side, its not easy physically or mentally, Between the hours of cluster feeding, cracked nips and engorgement I forgot how rough the first few weeks can be! Ive been using the @bodyicewoman breast packs and they are soothing AF, definitely my breast friend right now At least I received some encouragement this morning after I had a nurse come for a house call to weigh Xavier, hes up 520 grams in 9 days! #milkmachine #gotmilk #postpartumbody Anyone else ever felt like 'tits on legs' while breastfeeding?Comment below if you can relate to @mrsconnolly__ And for breastfeeding support, try our Breast Pack to help soothe and support your 'milk bar' www.bodyice.com/products/breast-pack . . . . #BodyICE #BodyICEwoman #breasticepack #mastitis #breastfeedingpads #hospitalbagessentials #pregnancy #healthypregnancy #maternalhealth #womenshealth #breastfeeding #childbirth #motherhood #2020baby #newborn #icepack #birthessentials #pregnancyessentials
03.01.2022 LABOUR TIPS TO EASE BACK PAIN Save this post as part of your birth toolkit! HOT SHOWER - Can help relax tense muscles and ease discomfort. You can even put a chair in the shower to sit on. If you plan to use the shower during the early phase of labour at home a useful tip is to check your hot water supply. You can even speak to your electricity supplier to turn an 'off-peak' system onto 'on-peak' for the month you are due, so the hot water doesn't run out when you nee...d it. HEAT PACK - Heat packs are a useful tool during labour as they can be placed directly where you want or need it - the lower back, abdomen, groin or perineum. Using a heat pack such as our Perenium Strip on your back will help boost circulation to the muscles of the back and provide comfort during the early stages of labour. TENS MACHINE - TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) machines send low-voltage electrical current to your body through electrodes stuck to the skin of your back that stimulates the body to produce more of its own natural painkillers (endorphins) and reduces the pain signals sent to the brain by the spinal cord. BACK MASSAGE - This is where your birth partner can help with some TLC! Or for more focused relief you can use a trigger point therapy ball like our @zonebylydia cork massage balls. Roll the ball around your lower back for muscle relaxation and to reduce pain. HANDS & KNEES - This position will keep your baby's head off your spine. It can also reduce stiffness in the lower back, especially if combined with gentle pelvic tilts to gently stretch the back muscles. STAY ACTIVE - You might need to try a few different positions to ease back pain during labour - walking around or bouncing on a birthing ball can be helpful. Avoid lying on your back, as this will put more pressure on your spine. www.bodyice.com/products/perineum-strip Did you experience back pain during childbirth? 02.01.2022 DO YOU HAVE SYMPHYSIS PUBIS DYSFUNCTION? If you are pregnant or have recently given birth, you may have SPD, which is also known as pelvic girdle pain. This is when the ligaments that normally keep your pelvic bone aligned during pregnancy become too relaxed and stretchy before birth. This makes the pelvic joint (symphysis pubis) unstable and can cause discomfort and pain in the pelvic region. ... SPD is diagnosed in roughly 1 in 300 pregnancies, though some experts say that up to 25 percent of all pregnant women will experience SPD (though not all have it diagnosed). What are the symptoms? The main symptom is usually pain or discomfort in the pelvic region centered on the joint at the front of the pelvis (the pubic symphysis). Typically, the pain is focused on the pubic area, but in some women it radiates to the upper thighs and perineum. It may cause difficulty when walking. Some women can even hear and feel the pubic symphysis and/or sacroiliac, clicking or popping in and out when walking or changing position. How to Treat SPD If you are suffering from SPD, seek help and guidance from a womens health physiotherapist. Treatment for pubic symphysis dysfunction is often a combination of stabilisation exercises, ice, positioning, and manual therapy. Targeted exercises reduce stress on the joint and improve stability. Stabilisation exercises include strengthening the abdominals, pelvic floor, gluteals, latissimus dorsi and hip adductors. Our BodyICE Woman Perineum Strip can be used (as shown in the image) to help ease the pain and treat SPD. www.bodyice.com/products/perineum-strip Read more about SPD here: www.bodyice.com//symphysis-pubis-dysfunction-during-pregna . . . . . #BodyICE #BodyICEwoman #symphysispubisdysfunction #spd #perinealtear #perineumstrip #pregnancy #healthypregnancy #maternalhealth #womenshealth #breastfeeding #childbirth #motherhood #2020baby #newborn #icepack #birthessentials #pregnancyessentials #midwife
