25.01.2022 Treatment for Frozen Shoulder at Bodyline Health Lower Plenty FROZEN SHOULDER Is diagnosed after a sustained period of pain and limited movement in the shoulder joint. Surrounding all movable joints of the body is a stocking like layer (called a capsule) that creates stability and encloses the lubricant within the joint, known as synovial fluid. Often after trauma to the shoulder, the stocking around the joint can thicken/tighten or even begin to stick to the bones of the... joint thus not allowing normal, free movement. This loss of mobility and associated pain results in the shoulder freezing up. SYMPTOMS? Frozen Shoulder is often charactered by three phases. Initially, we see pain and restriction in movement most often after a fall, bump, or injury to the shoulder or neck area. If movement is not restored quickly, the range of motion in the shoulder begins to diminish further/ instead of seeing improvement as would naturally be expected. This worsening of movement, over the next few months leads to the Frozen characteristic, finally diagnosed once the ability to lift the arm above shoulder height or to scratch the back, is lost. Once this phase is reached the prognosis is grim, and over the next 6-12 months the shoulder becomes stiffer making every day activities more difficult, furthermore the shoulder becomes very painful to treat and many people report the pain worsens at night. Finally, (some 12 to 18 months after the initial incident) the pain and range of motion in your shoulder begins to improve and strengthening can finally be restored. WHO DOES IT OCCUR IN? Females above the age of 40 are most affected by frozen shoulder, although it can also affect males. It is more likely to affect the non dominant arm, and unfortunately due to the overuse of the good arm during this long recovery, this opposite shoulder also requires treatment to prevent an overuse injury as a result. There is also an increased likelihood of experiencing frozen shoulder in patients after surgery, stroke and rotator cuff injury or when you are required to keeping the arm in a sling. TREATMENT In all cases/and or phases of Frozen Shoulder, it is critical to maintain, if not improve whatever range of motion you have as small as it may be. Arm swings, self assisted movements and exercise through the pain free (segments of arm movement) are important to maintain. Seeking treatment such as shoulder manipulations and muscle/joint mobilisation are vital in reducing the time spent in the frozen phase as these forms of treatment are the best means of breaking up the painful adhesions. 20.01.2022 HAPPY EASTER TO THE BODYLINE HEALTH COMMUNITY! 5 TIPS FOR STAYING HEALTHY-ISH THIS EASTER Make sure to enjoy your long weekend this Easter with family and friend catch-ups, fun with the kids and chocolate (not too much)! ... Here are 5 simple tips that will keep you feeling good this Easter long weekend. 1. Limiting Chocolate Intake! We all love to have a few choccy eggs for Easter as they are so easily available and yummy too. However, limiting your chocolate intake to a few little eggs a day will still suffice those cravings, but not enough to stay on the hips! 2.Eat Real Eggs! Instead of just eating chocolate eggs this long weekend, celebrate Easter by making real eggs for breakfast! Scrambled, poached, fried or folded, have them with toast or without! Studies show that people who ate two eggs for breakfast felt less hungry in the next 36 hour period following. Ideal for stopping those few little choccy eggs being consumed, and great for getting outside and enjoying the weekend, instead of feeling hungry! 3. Get Some Time Outside! This Easter long weekend is a perfect time to get outdoors and do something fun and memorable with family and friends. A BBQ lunch, catch-up brunch, meet at the pool or something similar. Getting outside and getting your body moving this long weekend will be something your body will thank you for. (Dont forget the sunscreen!) 4. Increasing Water Intake! With all those chocolate and outdoor activities, it is extremely important for you to keep hydrated this long weekend. Current guidelines suggest that drinking approximately 3 litres a day is the amount of water intake that people should aim for. 5. Return to Normal Eating by Tuesday! Although the BBQ lunch, catch-up brunch, and a day at the pool were great opportunities to eat holiday foods and chocolate Easter eggs, keeping on track with a balanced diet will help to control those sudden urges for chocolate consumption. Left over eggs? Bring them into work on Tuesday and let your colleagues finishes them off! Feel like the Easter long weekend left you with some muscle strains, stiff joints or general body discomfort? Come see after Easter to make sure you are keeping on track with your musculoskeletal health. Just book online at www.bodylinehealth.com or give us a call on (03) 9017 4784 to book an appointment with our specialised practitioners for a follow-up or initial appointment!

15.01.2022 SHOULDER PAIN WHAT IS IT? Shoulder Pain and injury are extremely common due to the mobility of the joint and the relatively small muscles around the shoulder holding it together. These muscles along with the connection to the neck and the complex network of nerves that run from the neck to shoulder and arm is often the cases of shoulder pain. If these muscles are damages they may simply not be strong enough to allow the shoulder to function properly further creating imbal...ance and other issues. This is the reason why it is so important for our shoulder muscles to be able to function properly at all times and as quickly as possible post injury/operation. SYMPTOMS: - Pain or discomfort around shoulder joint when executing daily tasks or whilst sleeping - Slow and painful to recover - Pain in the front of the shoulder or referral down the inner/outer arm - Difficulty lifting the arm above the head or behind the body CAUSES: Shoulders pain can have many different causes. The pain or discomfort may occur in the neck down to the shoulder, in the joint itself and from the muscles, tendons and ligaments surrounding the shoulder joint. Most shoulder problems occur as a result of a trauma (fall, bump over stretch). However, if no trauma has occurred the shoulder pain may be the result of a neck issue and present as - Inflammation (bursitis or tendinitis) - Instability of the Rotator Cuff Muscles - Arthritis like joint noise - Nerve Imgement and referral down the arm DIAGNOSIS: Diagnosis of the cause exact course of your pain or discomfort is often difficult and needs the skills of an experienced practitioner to examination the shoulder and the surrounding areas of the body. Imaging, such as X-ray of the shoulder may also be necessary to help a definitive diagnosis. Dr. Phillip Mifsud is a Sports Chiropractor who specializes in shoulder issues and has treated thousands of shoulders with a combination of techniques (from massage and manipulation, dry needling, biopuncture injections and exercises). If you are having shoulder pain or discomfort for the first time, or that wont go away or getting worse, make an appointment with Dr. Phil and he is certain to help! NEED HELP? 15.01.2022 PLANTAR FASCIITIS What is it? What are the causes of plantar fasciitis? Plantar Fasciitis is diagnosed when inflammation and pain is found at the heel, specifically the inner and underside of the foot. The role of the plantar fascia is to stabilise the underside of the foot and act as a shock absorber as it stretches, much like a luck band. Although it is a thick, strong tissue that runs the length of the foot from the heel to the toes, it is constantly stressed as we walk... and move around. Inflammation can be caused by: - Sudden increases in training load/intensity of fitness activities (i.e. going from walking to jogging/ jogging to sprints) - Participating in new activities that can put increases stress of the heel of the foot (i.e gym classes, jumping activates/sports) - Being overweight or experiencing a sudden increase in body weight (i.e. pregnancy) - Wearing flat at shoes with poor arch support more often than normal (i.e. thongs whilst on holidays) Symptoms: The main symptom of this condition is sharp pain under the heel of the foot. There can also be a burning or aching sensation, or slightly swollen. The pain can be worse in the morning, after prolonged standing and/or walking. Need relief? Plantar fasciitis is very common and can be difficult to treat. When diagnosing the cause of plantar fasciitis must be determined so as to avoid repeated re-aggravations. This often involves reducing the load/training on the foot (short term) and then progressively returning to the activity in controlled increments. Traditional techniques like icing and shoe inserts are beneficial: however, at Bodyline Health - Biopuncture injections are often utilised for this condition with fantastic results (even for chronic cases where cortisone has failed) . To find out more about biopuncture for fasciitis call our clinic on (03) 9017 4784 and Dr. Phil is more than happy to chat to you about your concerns. Alternatively, we are open 6 days a week to talk to our staff of or you can book an appointment anytime on our website at www.bodylinehealth.com .

11.01.2022 Tension Headache vs. Migraine what is the difference? Many of us have or will experience headaches at some point in time; but it can be hard to navigate what type of headache it is and what is causing it. Two of the most common headaches include Tension headaches and Migraines. Each of these headaches has certain characteristics that can help you identify which type it is. WHAT IS A TENSION HEADACHE?... A tension headache is the most common type of headache. Characteristics include: - Mild to moderate headache. - Feels like a tight band around your head (hat band distribution) - Pressure is mostly felt in your forehead and at the back of your head close to the top of the neck. - Commonly triggered by stress, poor posture or how you have slept. WHAT IS A MIGRAINE? Migraine is typically a more restricting type of headache that focuses pain around the back of one eye. In addition, migraine is difference to tension headache in that you can feel sick and can experience what is referred to as an aura. Aurass can be different for different people, however typical symptoms include: - Visual disturbances (such as swirls, flashing lights, wavy lines, dots or even blind spots) - Dizziness - Weakness and Fatigue - Mood changes - Changes in sense of smell and taste - Numbness or tingling These auras tend to arise before the headache, which characteristically affects behind the eyes, however Migraine can occur without Aura. WHAT CAN I DO TO TREAT THEM? For both these forms of headaches, the Chiropractic treatment can be the most rapid and effective forms of treatment. Gentle manipulations along with the neck muscle release to the small bands in the known as Trigger Points - can significantly alleviate the pain and ache. Chiropractic care can be used in conjunction with other forms of pain relief. If you suffer from Tension Headaches or Migraines, chiropractic care should be high on the list of options explored when looking for long term relief. Should you wish to explore this further, please do not hesitate to call Bodyline Health (90174784) and speak to Dr. Phillip Mifsud about your headaches.

10.01.2022 Treatment for ACL injury at Bodyline Health in Lower Plenty: WHAT IS IT? The Anterior Cruciate Ligament, more commonly known as the ACL is one of the main ligaments of the knee. The ACL and PCL cross over inside the knee joint, connecting your femur or thigh bone, to your Tibia/shinbone. Ligaments function to connect bone to bone, creating stability and movement between the two structures. Due to the position of the ACL, it is vulnerable to injuries from jumping and land...ing, sudden stops or changes in direction. These landing and deceleration forces put the ACL under increased load, because of this; it is a common sporting injury. SYMPTOMS; If you suspect you have an ACL injury, some symptoms you may experience include the following: - A Pop sound at time of injury - Severe pain - Inability to do daily activities - Swelling/inflammation - Decreased movement - Pain on movement - Stiffness - A feeling of instability - Leg "giving way" with weight bearing CAUSES: ACL injuries are commonly associated with sports that involve lots of jumping, landing, pivoting, sudden stopping, sudden changes in directions, or a direct blow such as soccer, football or netball. However, it could also happen after an awkward landing or fall. Whilst an ACL injury could happen to anyone, females and sports players tend to be more prone. In addition to this, poor footwear, and running on poor surfaces can increase your chance of sustaining injury. MANAGEMENT AND TREATMENT: Treatment does change depending on the severity of the injury; because of this is it important to seek advice from your local healthcare professional. However, initially treatment may include icing, bracing, relative rest and anti inflammatories. As treatment progresses, Chiropractic manipulation can be very effective in restoring motion to the knee. In addition to this, massage and strengthening exercises may be utilised. Whilst rare, surgery may be required in the case of a complete tear of this ligament. In this case, chiropractic care can be an excellent tool to maintain motion and aid with healing post-operatively. For more information or to book, call Bodyline Health on 03 9017 4784 or visit our website at https://www.bodylinehealth.com

10.01.2022 NECK PAIN What is it? What are the causes for neck pain? Neck pain is the most common condition patients come to see Chiropractors at BodylineHealth. Common causes of neck pain varies from a pinched nerve (from sleeping awkwardly or stress), injury and strain (such as whiplash), to arthritis and even herniated disc. Accurate diagnosis of the cause of the pain is vital and all the important structures other than muscles must be assessed (such as arteries, veins, lymph nodes..., thyroid gland, oesophagus, etc). Injuries to any of these structures can often lead to neck pain. Symptoms: - Stiff neck (can make it hard to turn the head) - Tension from the shoulders up to a ring around the head (Tension Headache) - Dull, sharp or stabbing pain in one or multiple spots - Soreness, tenderness, tingling or numbness in a general area - Dizziness or light-headedness - Pain that radiates down onto the shoulders, arms, or fingers, or can radiate up to the head Diagnosis: When diagnosing the cause of neck pain palpation of the neck and surrounding areas is completed, along with questions about the patients recent history of activities, as this can often the best indicator. Out of the ordinary events such as- - INRCEASED STRESS - CHANGED SLEEPING POSTURE (bed swapping for children or away in a different bed) - INCREASED/ABNORMALLY LONG TIME IN A CAR OR ON A COMPUTER - OR SOMETHING REPETITIVE (such as gardening, cleaning or painting) Are often the main causes and once identified must be avoided. However, these signs along with pain location, duration and radiation up to the head or down the arm are all vital in diagnosis. As experts who see this so frequently Bodyline Health can guide you in how to manage these issues and initiate a course of treatment to speed up recovery. Further testings such as x-rays are available at the clinic when required. Need relief? Call our clinic on (03) 9017 4784 and Dr. Phil will be more than happy to chat to you about your concerns. Alternatively, we are open 6 days a week to talk to our staff of or you can book an appointment anytime on our website at www.bodylinehealth.com .

09.01.2022 Treatment for bursitis at Bodyline Health WHAT IS IT? Bursa are small Jelly Bean like cushions found inside and around our joints that are filled with synovial fluid (the same fluid in our joints that acts as a lubricant). They are found through the body, but the most concentrated in the big movable joints such as the shoulder, elbow, hip and Knee. The purpose of these Jelly Bean like cushions is to absorb friction between bones and tendons of the joint - preventing r...Continue reading

07.01.2022 ARTHRITIS > What is Arthritis? Arthritis is a condition that typically affects the most repetitively used joints in the body such as knees, hips, back, shoulders and hands. The pain is the result of progressive erosion at the joint surface leading to swelling and changes to normal range of motion. > Causes: Healthy joints are surrounded by a capsulated that is filled with fluid to help lubricate movement (much like oil in your motor car). Within this capsule, bones join to...gether to allow movement in certain directions and each of these bone surfaces are in covered with cartilage (a strong, smooth and absorbing surface) that allows the bones to slide over each other with minimal damage and resistance. As we age, the body and joints slowly wear out with the rate of wear depending on stress and load placed on the joint over time or previous injury in that area. As wear and tear occur the joint space and fluid within becomes narrower, and the smooth strong cartilage begins to break down. Eventually, this result in the bony joint surfaces rubbing against one another causing pain, inflammation and swelling. This process (and further complications) steadily continues resulting in pain and Arthritis (also known as joint degeneration). > Symptoms: The main symptoms of arthritis is stiffness particularly after increased use (such as sports, gardening housework) or stiffness first thing in the mornings, where heat and slow movement can eventually help reduce the pain and inflammation within the joints. Furthermore, it is often seen on one side of the body (i.e. right knee) more so than the other side due to a previous injury or trauma in the past. > Need relief? Arthritis is very common and something majority of people will suffer from at some stage in life. Depending of the degree of degeneration in a particular area relief can vary; however, there are always steps that can be taken to improve any level of arthritic discomfort. Fundamentally, you must move it or lose it with hands-on therapy used to disperse swelling and restore normal range of movement plus self management techniques to further improve weight loss/load through the joint, reduce pain and a better lifestyle can be achieved. Arthritis is best diagnosed through x-rays and manual assessment. At Bodyline Health our chiropractors use onsite X-rays and traditional treatment such as massage and gentle joint manipulations to help free up the joint and lasting pain relief. > To find out more about treatment for arthritis call our clinic on (03) 9017 4784 and Dr. Phil is more than happy to chat to you about your concerns. Alternatively, we are open 6 days a week to talk to our staff of or you can book an appointment anytime on our website at www.bodylinehealth.com . See more

07.01.2022 A bit of motivation for all you runners out there!

06.01.2022 SCIATICA Can be the cause of : Lower back pain WHAT IS IT? Sciatica treatment is the commonly treated back ailment at Bodyline Health - Sciatica is a symptom of lower back pain where pain runs along the sciatic nerve - down the back and into the legs. The pain (often described as tingling, numbness, or weakness) can be shooting in the muscles of the buttocks and travel down the legs.... SYMPTOMS: Sciatica is often characterised by one or more of the following- Pain across the lower back/buttock that runs down one leg (left or right side only, rarely both sides) Shooting down the leg but not past the knee Pain that gets worse when standing up from sitting position Causes difficult when walk for prolonged periods Burning or tingling pain that is rated as severe COMMON CAUSES: There are numerous causes of Sciatica, however a large portion of all back problems occur when a person is - More stress than usual, - Completing greater periods of time sitting in a car/or at a computer, - Changes in normal sleeping routine in different bed/ postures (i.e. with children) - Or after doing repetitive movement that your body is not accustom too (such as painting up a ladder or digging in the garden). One or a combination of these changes (in our experience) often results in two common conditions that than lead to irritation of the Sciatic nerve and the resulting back and leg pain. Piriformis Tension the sciatic nerve runs under the when the Piriformis muscle (deep in the buttock). If the Piriformus muscle becomes irritated due to tightness or inflation it compresses the sciatic nerve underneath thus creating the sciatica-type pain. Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction The sacroiliac joint is located at the bottom of the spine, there you see the two dimples at tthe pelvis. If this joint is becomes misaligned, it is unable to function properly . This distortion cause nerve irritation, inflammation and tension to the muscles surrounding the joint thus causing sciatica-type pain.
