15.01.2022 I spent a lot of time in hospital (again) this year, I relapsed for the second time with a unique form of Acute Myloid Leukemia, a myloid sarcoma located in my sinus. I had been sick and suffering from migraines for months until I was finally diagnosed with a relapse. Blood cancer patients are a little different to other types of cancer in that each chemo treatment takes an entire month and during that time we are required to stay in the hospital because we become neutrope...nic which means we can easily get infections and can't fight them off without lots of intravenous antibiotics, which happened a few times to me, it's scary. And sometimes it takes many, many months of chemo treatments to do the trick. Being in a hospital for long periods of time is made worse by the drab and depressing atmosphere so just like my first two times going through treatment I decided to decorate my hospital walls with art!! Whenever I was feeling well enough I would create some art to stick on my walls. Then I started asking my visitors to create art with me and I stuck that on my walls. Even friends who couldn't visit sent me artwork to stick on my wall What resulted was this colourful and eclectic range of artworks. Art is more than just colourful decoration though. It is healing, it helps us to connect to each other and the world around us. It let's us explore and practice spirituality and culture. It connects me to my ancestors and my country. It tells our stories, especially when vocalising those stories is difficult. Art creates and records memories. It invites conversations and ideas to be shared. It can change what could be an awkward or uncomfortable encounter with a medical professional into a friendly chat or even help a visitor who is feeling scared or worried about me feel at ease and gives us something to do together that takes the focus off my situation, which can be scary for people to be faced with. Art is all these things and so so so much more. Thank you to everyone who has shown me support through out this hard time, no words will really ever express how much it means to me.
