25.01.2022 "Flood Notch" info...

25.01.2022 Well, a quick response from GT at Mid Coast Council regarding discolouration of water in the Manning River prior to the East Coast Low on the week-end....... "That is almost certainly iron precipitate associated with acid sulfate soils which are common in the low lying areas of the floodplain. Also at the current time iron oxide associated with naturally occurring iron bacteria which occurs within creek systems is being released as a result of stream flow. It is likely to be ...a combination of both but predominantly a result of acid soil drainage due to the extent of acid sulfate soils in the lower Manning. As a result of the extended drought conditions and now filling of the groundwater table in wetlands and low lying country, oxidation of iron sulphides and release of iron and other products with these soils is occurring. This is a serious problem impacting on water quality in the Manning. Substantial restoration work has occurred over the past 20 years in the Cattai Creek floodplain to address one of the worst acid soil hot spots in NSW. I have attached a photo of a acid drainage plume exiting Cattai Creek back in 2010. Also attached is an aerial photo of acid soil effected country in the Cattai Creek. Whilst this is being progressively restored there are many wetland and floodplain areas with natural and artificial drainage discharging pollutants. Considerable work has occurred with landholders to reduce the impact of acid soil drainage. In addition to the acid soil drainage localised discolouration can occur as a result of natural occurring iron bacteria (micro organisms) which produces iron oxide. These bacteria cause a rusty-coloured sediment or stain in the water which may also coat or discolour nearby vegetation. This has been identified in several local creek systems across the Midcoast following the prolonged dry conditions and subsequent rain. Iron bacteria take iron from the water and turn it into energy, leaving a slimy deposit of iron oxide (rust) behind. The deposits are usually more noticeable during dry periods when water is still and stagnant. Water affected by iron bacteria often has an oily sheen. Due to its unsightly appearance, iron bacteria is often mistaken for a sewage or petrol spill. However, there is no evidence to suggest that the bacteria are harmful to our waterways. Iron occurs naturally in the soil and leaches out continually into waterways. When oxygen, water and iron mix together they create the right conditions for iron bacteria to bloom. The reason you are witnessing the discolouration at the end of the run out tide is that this is when the iron stained water is drained from swamps, creeks and drains. Thanks for reporting and asking the question." GT MCC 7/20.

19.01.2022 The answer to Life , Universe, and , Everything..........

18.01.2022 G'day to all...hope everyone is well.... As indicated in a previous "post" ..... moves are afoot to lobby State and Federal representatives to finally do something about the entrances to the Manning River ....Manning Point / Harrington & Farquhar Inlet.....It is envisaged that the Northern Entrance would become a permanent "navigable" entrance and that the South Channel would have a permanent "non navigable" entrance to allow the exchange of sea water into the South Channel.... The first major hurdle in fulfilling this vision is to lobby our Mid Coast Council Councilors and demonstrate to them that this community is expecting their united support....... Please read the attached info from a local advocacy group "Love the Manning River" and forward your support ..... This may well be one of "those' opportunities that will not arise again for many years............

14.01.2022 A post from some pretty "cheesed off" people......so often this sort of behaviour is "blamed" on people from outside our area..... this is not the case....the result of some of our local "lads" behaving badly...shame, shame...no respect....

14.01.2022 Here's something different guys....If you're up on holidays or you're a local ....Oxley Island Community Hall Committee are having a "shindig" to bring in the New Year .....BB&T is only too happy to support local community activities. Please See Attached.

11.01.2022 For your info.......

09.01.2022 Hope everyone is well ...... BB&T is hoping that there might be someone out there in "FB Land" that would have any idea of where the discoloured water invading the lower reaches of the Manning River is coming from.....it has appeared over the last couple of weeks and tends to "appear" on the last of the run-out tide, and is very sporadic....it does not tend to appear every day ....there one minute/ gone the next..... At this stage we have not had any significant rainfall in t...he catchment area to generate a "fresh" ( which usually generates discoloured water as run-off ) and this discoloured water is different...tends to have a much lighter colour and a "suspension" of sediment ...most unusual...... I have not seen this before...any clues ?? Cheers Mark n Narelle

09.01.2022 Today is a significant day .......
