24.01.2022 I received a very charming book on punctuation by mail the other day... http://www.boldface.com.au/punctuation-by-user-design/

23.01.2022 UN Women’s flagship report, Progress of the world’s women 20192020: Families in a changing world, assesses the reality of families today in the context of sweeping economic, demographic, political, and social transformation. What an honour: I got to provide some proofreading and editorial services for this amazing work. http://www.unwomen.org//digit/progress-of-the-worlds-women

23.01.2022 The Copy Collective (https://www.facebook.com/TheCopyCollective) is one of the organisations that I work with. They're good people, I like their business model, and for me, they're also a good resource. If my particular strengths don't match up to your editing or writing needs, there's a whole team of folks whose collective experience will surely do. http://thecopycollective.com/people/

22.01.2022 To add to my editing reference books, I will bookmark the dictionary of 'Ridiculous Business Jargon' http://www.theofficelife.com/business-jargon-dictionary-A.h. I'll try not to use it but at least it might explain some of this jargon that I come across in my work far too often. Share your favourite definition in the comments!

22.01.2022 I did some writing for the Tiyce & Lawyers website quite a while ago. It's good to see Michael Tiyce in the news, kindly offering help to a couple to carry out their commitment. http://www.news.com.au//n/4dcaa833c241681533e4ff121e785259

21.01.2022 More on the Oxford comma (punctuation counts!) https://www.nytimes.com///16/us/oxford-comma-lawsuit.html

21.01.2022 Today's writing tip: one of the most common issues that I see while editing papers and reports is not using an en-dash in number rages, either for years or pages. Using a hyphen is incorrect. It's pp. 510, not pp. 5-10 (though you might have to squint to see the difference). Another handy hint from the article is that a date range might be appropriate for a list or caption (Boldface, 20112017) but in a sentence, it should be something like 'Boldface has been in operation from 2011 to 2017'. https://www.dailywritingtips.com/use-a-dash-for-number-ran/

21.01.2022 The comments make some challenges to some of the points in this article, but I think the Danish workplace sounds pretty good overall, not least of all for the concept that one should be happy at work. http://www.fastcoexist.com//5-simple-office-policies-that-

20.01.2022 I'm clearing out some old files and came across an article or two I printed out from the New York Times. Back in 2012, Constance Hale published a wonderful six-part series of writing lessons. And since my work is about good writing and communication, it's very pertinent. So, before I put the hard-copy of this article in the recycling bin, here's why verbs make the difference why a sentence crackles with energy or is limp and listless. https://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com//make-or-break-verbs/

17.01.2022 I published an article on LinkedIn: 'Nine reasons you need an editor'. https://www.linkedin.com//nine-reasons-you-need-editor-and

17.01.2022 Is good grammar a deal-breaker? Huge discussion generated from these articles... http://www.linkedin.com//20140615214931-35090767-why-good-

17.01.2022 Monday in Australia and the start of another great week. Here's some recent work of mine. I don't know whether my words have ever looked so good. http://www.boldface.com.au/ntt-communications-brochure/

16.01.2022 On working at UNESCO in Paris on the Education for All Global Monitoring Report: http://www.boldface.com.au/the-global-monitoring-report-on/

15.01.2022 It's such a pleasure to work with such a varied group of clients. The Medical Technology Association of Australia (MTAA) is the national association representing companies in the medical technology industry, who provide so much life-saving technology to Australians. I helped them out on a few publications last year, editing their fact book and annual report.

14.01.2022 New report out from UN Women: Gender Equality in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. I'm very proud to have been involved as editor of this report. #PromisesToAction #GlobalGoals

14.01.2022 Unexpectedly, Boldface is going overseas. I won't be available for new clients between 24 Sept 2014 to 3 Feb 2015. But don't be a stranger. Feel free to send me a message if you have enquiries.

13.01.2022 I just finished editing and proofreading a report for UNDP about legal gender recognition. It's very interesting material. If transgender people cannot get their gender legally recognised in their countries, it affects their lives badly in many ways: http://www.asia-pacific.undp.org//legal-gender-recognition

12.01.2022 A good article from BWD, who I've done a litle bit of work for over the years, on the tyranny of jargon. The potshot at Derrida seems a bit gratuitous, but the rest of the piece is very smartly written.

12.01.2022 Over the last few years, I've found that January and February are usually slow months in Sydney. But this year, I've been run off my feet. I've been happily kept busy with work for the City of Sydney, UNDP, UNESCO and The Copy Collective. This is as good as a time as any to say I'm soon back to Paris to work for the Global Education Monitoring Report, based at UNESCO. I'll be out of Sydney from 18 Feb to 23 May and unavailable for other work. Don't be a stranger though. Message me if you have any enquiries or want to keep in touch.

11.01.2022 Tiyce & Lawyers sorely needed an update on their website and I was glad to help them with their copy. For services that might be needed in challenging times, we wanted the copy to be open, friendly and accessible while being clear about the services they provide. Their new design and logo look great too: elegant and simple. http://tiyce.com/

10.01.2022 I edit everything from reports from UN agencies to blogs for small businesses. I love the variety of what I get to work on, such as this recently published report on mining and sustainable development. http://www.undp.org//poverty-r/Managing-Mining-for-SD.html

07.01.2022 You can now download the 2016 Skin Health Australia Report Card. It was an honour to be the writer of this, through Etched Communications, for the past two reports. I learned a lot... https://www.skincancer.asn.au/news/2075/2016-sharc-report

06.01.2022 I love this 'bracket'. I try not to be too harsh with client that fall into too much jargon but rather tease them gently about it, which creates the right ... synergy. https://thecooperreview.com/business-jargon-bracket/

05.01.2022 Such an interesting range of work these days. I'm writing and editing about eHealth, contemporary dance, property investment, IT, accounting software and systems, and city planning. I find it exciting to engage with such a diversity of topics, and be able to provide assistance to such a wide range of clients.

04.01.2022 This was a nice opportunity. I spoke about editing to a group of trainees in Ramallah by Skype. The trainees had mostly trained in translation and the session was about how they might work with editors, what the editing process involves, and what they might look for in an editor.

04.01.2022 Boldface is now pre-qualified to provide writing and communication services to NSW government agencies: http://www.boldface.com.au/nsw-pre-qualification/

04.01.2022 I'd generally agree with this list from 2012, but add 2014's terrible daily headlines: 'You won't BELIEVE what happened next!', 'This [cat video] will make your day!', 'Shock claims will baffle you' etc. etc. What are the words and phrases you're currently finding most irritating? http://www.prdaily.com/Main/Articles/11795.aspx

04.01.2022 For the second year, I was the editor for the Global Education Monitoring Report, the world's most important annual report on education. Launch events are this week!

03.01.2022 We've reached the final week of performances for 'Triptych' in Sydney, with only 4 more performances remaining. There are still great seats available for all sh...ows. WATCH a preview of Rafael Bonachela's 'Les Illuminations' featuring the spellbinding Katie Noonan and talented musicians of ACO2. #SDCTriptych

02.01.2022 While I've got a lot of interesting editing projects on at the moment, this was one of the most interesting: how do we unlock the benefits of mobile banking (digital finance) for women? #mobilebanking #gender #genderequality #unwomen https://www.unwomen.org//discussion-paper-leveraging-digit

02.01.2022 I don't do proofreading as my main business but for the occasional small job, it appeals to my perfectionism. Through the very talented team at Squad Ink, I get to occasionally proofread promo material, packaging and labels for the very cool Archie Rose, an Australian distillery. I spent my latest earnings from them on their own products! I couldn't resist getting ahold of their new ArchieMite: a gin with the flavours of buttered toast smeared with Vegemite (though I don't think they're allowed to say vegemite). It's quite a subtle flavour, actually: and tastes somewhat like... breakfast Perhaps the smell of it is the most prominent part. I also grabbed me some tailored gin, where I chose my own flavours (perhaps too subtly: it just takes like a really good gin)

02.01.2022 A rather good guide to writing from Zack Weinersmith at Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal.
