23.01.2022 Burra opens up for Open Doors Weekend April 28 and 29 This weekend Burra opens its doors for a program of events and activities to get you exploring its secrets... and treasures. In 2017 Burra joined the list of Australia’s national heritage places in recognition of its Cornish mining heritage. This makes one of only 110 sites around Australia acknowledged on the national list. To celebrate Burra’s extraordinary heritage, as part of this year’s Australian Heritage Festival and SA History Festival Open Doors Weekend, Burra’s heritage attractions will be buzzing this weekend with live music, family activities and challenges for curious minds. Kick off on Friday night with a night tour by South Australia’s most awarded tour operator, Adelaide’s Haunted Horizons. Alison Oborne will take you for a walk on the dark side at Redruth Gaol. This event requires pre-booking and payment: https://www.facebook.com/events/191185595016884/ On Saturday set off with your Burra Heritage Passport and access the principal sites with your passport key, available from the Visitor Information Centre. Check in at the Hampton Village, Redruth Gaol, Miners’ Dugouts and Unicorn Brewery for more challenges and surprises. Trying tagging the town with your ideas to go into the prize draw for a range of weekend accommodation packages. For families, there will be storytelling and craft activities in the garden beside the Market Square Museum. Find out all about the story of Johnny Green, the original miners’ mascot. The fascinating Bon Accord Museum will be open Saturday and Sunday from 10-4pm with its impressive collection of vintage fire engines out for future firefighters to explore. Live music takes place at Redruth Goal on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. On Saturday, acclaimed guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Fiona Boyes sings the blues from 12-2pm and on Sunday come to the Gaol for a performance by bush band Ewe Calyptus from 2-4pm.
