25.01.2022 Dr Deutsch has a special interest the effects of dry mouth and in the use of silver fluorides in the elderly. Dr Deutsch has developed a number of silver fluoride techniques particularly suited for use in Aged Care to prevent and manage caries in the frail elderly and in dementia patients exhibiting challenging behaviours and limited ability to co-operate. Dr Deutsch has published a technique manual and has published other articles on silver fluoride and preventive interventions for dry mouth conditions and aged care.

17.01.2022 How safe are dental x-rays and how often do I need them? X-rays are an important diagnostic tool to check for holes between teeth, periodontal disease, as well as infection and any other issues. Early detection of dental problems may save you time, additional costs and unnecessary discomfort in the future. We recommend that two bitewing x-rays be taken (one on each side) every two years.

14.01.2022 A FEW FUN FACTS... Dr Alan Deutsch is a general dental practitioner in Sydney and consultant to the Montefiore Aged Care Nursing Homes. He was chair of the committee that established the first full service dental clinic in an aged care facility (ACF) designed to be run by a dental oral therapist in conjunction with visiting dental practitioners and has helped develop a new model of delivery of oral care for ACFs. He is a member of the Oral Health Reference Group, Centre for R...esearch and Education on Ageing (CERA) and has been working in Aged Care Dentistry for many years. He is currently undertaking a Masters in Philosophy (Dentistry) by research and is the lead researcher in a collaborative pilot study between the Dementia Collaborative Research Centre (DCRC) NSW University, CERA Sydney University and Montefiore nursing home. The study is looking at the feasibility of training residential aged care facility nurses in oral assessments and saliva testing to create nurse advanced oral care plans. These plans will enable nurses untrained in dental on multiple shifts to administer preventive interventions on a daily or hourly basis if need be.

13.01.2022 Why do we need to floss Information from Deepa our Hygienist! As we know, brushing teeth cleans only the outer and top surfaces of teeth and gums. Brushing does not clean in between teeth and you need to use floss to remove the germs (plaque) sticking to gums, teeth, and roots between the teeth. Floss is designed to clean the tight spaces between the teeth and the gaps between gums and teeth, where bacteria often cause infection. If you do not floss, you will have plaque ...build-up, leading to tooth decay, gum disease and bad breath. If left untreated, gum disease can be a risk factor for heart disease and diabetes. In the long term, a healthy mouth will help prevent much more serious diseases (pneumonia, heart attack), some of which can be life threatening. Flossing can help prevent stains between teeth, improve the appearance of your mouth as well as your dental hygiene and overall health. Many people who suffer from sensitive or bleeding gums avoid flossing for fear of making them bleed. But in fact, bleeding is the first sign of gum disease. Flossing will remove the bacteria, which causes gum disease, allowing your gums to heal by themselves. It’s more important to take time and floss correctly, than it is to floss often and badly; as you will miss a lot of bacteria and debris. It is far better to floss once a day and do it well, so that you can clean all teeth surfaces. See more

12.01.2022 How to floss Break off approximately 30cm of floss Wind the ends of it around your middle fingers. Hold the floss tightly with the index finger and thumb, use the tips of your fingers.... Guide the floss between the teeth. Using a gentle sawing motion. When the floss reaches the gum line, curve it into a C-shape against the tooth. Fold the floss against the tooth. Gently scrape the side of the tooth, using up and down motion Gently slide it into the space between the gum and the tooth until you feel slight resistance. Slide up against gum Fold against the outer tooth in the opposite direction Repeat above Don’t forget teeth standing alone and the back surface of wisdom teeth. Repeat this technique on all of your teeth. See more
