23.01.2022 THE COACH - AKA THE MENTOR The first to arrive and the last to leave, The first to listen yet the last to criticise,... The first to acknowledge, and the last to dismiss - the coach is your clubs rock without whom there is no plan or direction. The formalities of a coaches accreditation are usually basic to say the least. Often overflowing with outdated, generic information and requirements, it's a minefield of practicality verses less than ideal information floating in a sea of confusion and political correctness. From the wise words of the mighty Bruce Lee - Use that which is useful and reject what is not. Many rookies that lack natural creativity will inevitably be bound to the strict 'code' imposed and as such will fall by the wayside, blind to their true creative potential. Fear not, with time things for the focused will become clearer and more personal. For the more passionate, time breeds uniqueness and individuality in their style. The formal classroom and its content, although legally necessary, will be a tiny spec on an accomplished coaches resume in real world practicality - Engaging coaches are true individuals with original thoughts, ideas and plans based on sound principles through personal experiences. Observe, perceive, acknowledge, adapt and evolve - be yourself and most importantly be unique in your delivery. Empathy is a coaches friend - use it wisely and with objectivity, bend, but never break. Ruthlessness is their foe - however in small respectful doses it can drive home a point. Lead by example, exhibit poise in delivery with a mixture of strength and confidence. Harmony within the canoe is paramount and only truely understood by a coach who understands individual athletes chemistry, its mechanics and its effects on not only others, but the canoe itself. This perception will override even the toughest of time trials. - coaches who understand this complex relationship will exceed as will their teams. Never be boring, never be dull. Be creative, it really is the key to developing your own personal style, never deviate and stick with your plan. Be patient, bide your time and it will come - once the tide of creativity rolls in all will be revealed. Your clubs coach is much more than their title implies. Regardless of your experience or knowledge, respect them, they have a plan. You never know, you might just learn something in the process! cpo

18.01.2022 Dear Members, Clubs and Stakeholders, Due to global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Australian Outrigger Canoe Racing Association (AOCRA) Board of Directo...rs in conjunction with its Zone Leaders have come to the difficult and mutual decision to cancel all events until 30 September 2020. This includes the National Marathon Titles, AOCRA Aito, Trans Tasman Gubbi Gubbi, National Junior Marathon Titles, Coaching Courses and Camps. We have been monitoring the situation closely and adhering to the advice of the Federal Government and other relevant authorities since the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus. Following the updated information and advice over the weekend from the Federal Government, and in consideration of the wider paddling community, the Board and Zones today made a decision. The decision to cancel was a very difficult one, and we are very disappointed to have to do so. However, it was done taking into consideration (but not limited to) the following: * The unknown timelines that we are all facing in terms of travel restrictions and the impact of life as we know it; * The overall health and safety of our national paddling community; * Member Zones already heavily impacted by COVID-19; * The risk to our Operations Team, Volunteers, Sub Commitees and broader stakeholders. As the national association, we have an obligation to ensure the safety of our membership and act in their best interests and in that of the sport of Outrigger Canoeing. We acknowledge and recognise the amount of work that any Zones and in particular, their local organising committees, have done in preparation for these events. We also acknowledge the significant financial impact this decision will have on Clubs, Zones and the association. AOCRA will arrange refunds for all entry fees already paid in advance excluding direct transaction costs incurred as part of the process. The Board have commenced discussions with our sponsors and stakeholdes and will be undertaking an assessment of the impact our ability to deliver on approved Strategic Projects this year based on this decision. We will also be using this time to plan for the future so as to we ensure we bounce back stronger than ever, when the time comes. In this difficult and uncertain time that we are all facing, it is fortunate to know that our paddling community is strong and it is important that we look out for each other. Please make sure that you are all adhering to COVID-19 guidelines and practice physical distancing wherever possible as communicated previously. Should you have any questions, please direct them to [email protected] Yours sincerely, Katherine Cole President, AOCRA

03.01.2022 Dear Members, A meeting was held this afternoon between the National body and States to discuss the current pandemic of COVID-19 and AOCRA’s options. The Natio...nal body and States have agreed that all future regattas be postponed or cancelled for the next 30 days, at which time the situation of COVID-19 will be re-evaluated. The health and safety of our members and families is of the utmost importance. AOCRA will continue to monitor the situation. AOCRA NSW encourages all of our competitors and supporters to practice the highest level of hygiene and follow the advice from the Department of Health in regards to self-isolating in an endeavour to limit the spread of COVID-19. We look forward to seeing you all out on the water soon. Chris Berry President, AOCRA NSW 15 March 2020
01.01.2022 THE RENAISSANCE MAN - Number 5 Reserved for the more astute paddler, fifth from the front is a thinking mans seat. A competent steerer in his own right, the ri...ght-hand man, chief assistant and confidant to the master and commander in six - this is a seat of great responsibility and power. A gatherer of infomation, with the skill to process it at a whim, with this information at hand, they respond instinctively and instantly. Their knowledge of both the ocean and canoe is second only to that of the steerer, and at times, equal. They are the commanders back up and will share and voice their opinion, where the steerer will heed their warnings if deemed appropriate. Falsely, many crews will allocate this seat to the inexperienced, a disaster in the making to be sure. The responsibility may not be fully understood in the more calmer, safer waters - however, shortcomings under pressure will soon be evident when things become a little more serious. They need to be strong, with a powerful blade that can be 'on tap' at a moments notice, they are the last in a powerful, living, breathing human engine. They will rally the troops (3 & 4) - for they are the ignition for the 'engine room' and always ready to pull a rabbit out of a hat, with the flick of the hips or a drop of the shoulder, they own the ama and working hand in hand with the 'boss', will get you home safely, time and time again. They are the last to leave the beach with 'EL capitan' after a race and the first to shout them a beer. They see all, yet criticises non, to busy with the job at hand - for they are the 'keeper' of the ama and guard it with a vengeance! cpo
01.01.2022 Dear Members Is everyone getting pumped for the first regatta? I hope so, as Pacific Dragons have been putting in a huge effort into making sure we can have a ...great day. The reality that we are living in means that regattas aren’t going to be like they were in the past. You can’t rock up, paddle and go home. There is going to be a bit more we all need to do to make sure we comply with Covid and government regulations. So please start thinking about it and keep your eyes on emails and Facebook so you don’t miss any updates. On a positive note, I want more juniors on the water so we will have reduced race fees for all juniors, including a special OC1/2, V1 race over 4km. There are some great prizes for juniors, so please start promoting the races to your juniors. It will be a safe and easy 4km and we would love to see as many as possible out there. All clubs need to start thinking about being Covid safe on regatta day. As a minimum, each club are going to be required to: Have a Covid Officer Bring your own small table to have hand sanitiser available in your area Bring your own canoe sanitiser/disinfectant spray Ensure all paddlers and guests log into the QR app. Guests/supporters are not encouraged but we understand some are essential Ensure no socialising with other clubs Most importantly, we all need to pay 100% respect to all the volunteers and organisers on the day. We will have a no-tolerance rule if you don’t comply with a request from any staff on the day. Together we can have a great season and if we make this first event a huge success, then this sets the scene for our season and show other councils that we can comply. I can’t wait to get out and race and so keep your eyes on the communication as we update you over the next month Mick Seay President, AOCRA NSW
