20.01.2022 After birth pains! Something most do not talk about, but needs to be discussed and expected to occur, prior to birth! These pains are necessary and should no...t be a reason to be concerned, in most cases. These contractions can last anywhere from 2-6 days, and typically get progressively worse, or stronger, with each consecutive child. This is a part of the uterine involution process! Uterine involution is something I teach about prenatally, and feel all women should be educated on prior to birth. This is where the uterus shrinks back to size, eventually, getting back into it’s place inside the pelvis. The cramps are the uterus contracting down back to size, which is what we want and need in a physiological and healthy postpartum healing. Most find that these cramps will intensify when baby is first latched at the breast, then each time consecutively until the process is complete. This is because the baby’s saliva comes in contact with the nipple and areola, stimulating prolactin and oxytocin to flow. This reaction reminds the body, Baby has been born- it is now time for the uterus to contract back to size!. We need and want for this to happen! When we go without these contractions, the uterus can become boggy instead of firm. This is where delayed postpartum hemorrhage can ensue. Most first time mothers will not feel the after birth contractions. Second time mothers often feel them for the first time, after the birth of their second child. Most women will agree that they get progressively stronger and more painful with each consecutive baby. I like to believe that the increase in pain is because the uterus is an overzealous professional! It knows what it’s doing, and does it more efficiently after each baby. Showing off it’s competency and innate knowing of internal healing! How were your after birth, uterine involution contractions? Those who had multiple babies, did those contractions get worse with each baby? How long did your pains last? The first latch can also be something women have to navigate. How was your first latch with your littles? Did you find one child’s nursing journey beginning to be more complicated than another?
16.01.2022 Thank you to all the dads
15.01.2022 No other mammal doubts their ability to give birth. They seek out isolation - darkness - quiet - and they let the process unfold. It really is silly, after all,... to doubt our ability to procreate when it is quite literally what keeps our species alive. But the indoctrination is real. From before we can remember we’re told how painful & dangerous & impossible birth is. We’re told how long aunt Sally’s labor was & how many interventions were required & how she almost bled to death. And then, once we start seeing birth on TV and in the movies, it’s always portrayed as a dangerous, intensely medicalized experience with a lot of rushing around, screaming, and machines constantly beeping. So it’s no wonder that, by the time we get to be pregnant ourselves, we have no idea what our bodies are capable of. But the truth is, YOU WERE MADE FOR THIS. For those of you who are about to comment that birth doesn’t always go well & that, even in undisturbed births there can be complications, of course that’s true. My informational posts are always about how the majority of cases go, not the outliers, but I don’t deny that the outliers exist. It’s a waste of your time to argue with someone who doesn’t disagree with you, so please don’t bother. If we trusted our bodies to birth like we trust them to digest food or pump our blood or do any of the other incredible processes they do without help or even a thought, the world would be in an entirely different place. . . . . . . . . . . . . #hospitalbirth #birthtrauma #obstetricviolence #birthinjury #interventions #induction #inductionoflabor #overdue #overduebaby #maternitycare #obgyn #birthnurse #obnurse #midwife #homebirthmidwife #midwifery #midwifelife #catchingbabies #unassistedbirth #freebirth #birthcontrol #bornathome #borninwater #childbirtheducation #birtheducation #epidural #epiduralbirth #naturalbirth #chiropractor #birthplan
