25.01.2022 The first proper frost this season. Bonnie celebrated by eating the ice and having mad zoomies in it. Now that she’s a senior doggie she wears a Tassie tux though. Me, I broke out the extra pair of socks, the wrist warmers and the beannie. The kitchen garden slows right down now, no new plantings till the days start getting longer again. . . . #geevestonfrosts #huonvalleyfrosts #huonvalleylife #labradorslovethecold #dogsoftasmania #bonniesbowlkitchengarden @ Geeveston, Tasmania, Australia

25.01.2022 One of the highlights of our week at Bonnie’s Bowl is on harvest morning when the sourdough bread arrives out of the oven and over the fence from the @littleblackfridge at @juliaspantry just in time for Second Breakfast. Bonnie’s eyes just about pop out of her head from the scent of fresh warm bread straight out of the oven every time. She’s allowed a teensy bit - not too much because that Velcro on her coat that goes around her belly is getting a bit tight lately. I slather two big slices with ghee. It is sooooo delicious. . . . #bakersmakethebestneighbours #geevestonyumminess #geevestoneating #huonvalleylife

23.01.2022 Does anyone else let their salad brassicas go to seed together to see what happens? This season’s self sown lucky dip includes some crosses between Japanese mustard, frilly mustard and the normal red mizuna on the right resulting in these frilly, lacy mustards with lovely subtle red patterning. In the second photo a kale has crossed with the Japanese mustard, making a spicy tender kale. Should I call it Kustard? . . . #bonniesbowlkitchengarden #openpollinatedadventures #mustardgreenvolunteers #foodshouldbefun #spicysaladgreens @ Geeveston, Tasmania, Australia

22.01.2022 Purple cauli and optimistic Labrador. Sorry Bonnie, this beautiful specimen is going to a cauli-loving friend who’s had a challenging couple of weeks. Because a cauliflower is way better than a bunch of flowers you can’t even eat. Bonnie would agree, if you can’t eat it, is there even a point to it? . . . #bonniesbowlkitchengarden #purplecauli #heritageveg #springharvests #kitchengardenproduce #notill #tinyfarmed #rainbowfood

20.01.2022 A beautiful and delicious pickle tasting platter by Cassy @harvestandlight , as wonderful as ever for our monthly(ish) friends’ get together. And this morning I went to @seedfreaks tomato seedlings sale because evidently I didn’t feel that 23 varieties of tomato were enough and I had to get a few more. In my defence, how can I resist growing a tomato called Dances With Smurfs? I also grabbed a lot if tomatillos and pardon chillies, but in a good cause because it’s to help ...Cassy with her future pickle plates. So yes these two pictures are connected, not as random as they seem. The apple blossoms are on the lovely walk through the neighbouring orchard to the seedling sale. It’s on again tomorrow, details @seedfreaks . Take cardboard box. Or two, in case you get a bit carried away like I did. Now begins the annual and inevitable jostle and replanning to find space to plant ALL THE THINGS. See more

19.01.2022 Harvesting Oca, one of my favourite foods that I’ve discovered since moving to Tassie. I save the biggest ones for replanting, the next biggest ones go to my veggie loving customers and friends, and the tiny ones go in my belly. Even the little ones are tasty, especially roasted with olive oil and sea salt. There are lots of undersized ones this year, but now the frosts have finally arrived I need to pull them out before they get soggy, or eaten by critters. And yes, Bonnie e...ats even oca. . . . #oca #nzyam #bonniesbowlkitchengarden #autumnharvests #coolclimatecrops #growingfoodintasmania #rootcrops @ Geeveston, Tasmania, Australia See more

18.01.2022 I’m very happy to see that parasitic wasps have taken up residence here again at Bonnie’s Bowl Kitchen Garden. Not spraying to get rid of the green caterpillars that eat the brassica plants means that parasitic wasps can eat the caterpillars for me instead. I’ve had a fair few chewed leaves but it’s well worth it to keep these predators well fed. . . . #parasiticwaspcocoons #thecavalryiscoming #bonniesbowlkitchengarden #gardeningcolleagues #autumninthekitchengarden

17.01.2022 Bonnie is 11 yrs old today. She puts her sprightliness down to plenty of stolen broccoli and pea sprouts from the garden, sardines for breakfast, lots of belly rubs and spending time with favourite humans and being loved to pieces by them. She got a new squeaky teddy because you’re never too old to play. I think she likes it. I don’t think its ears are going to last very long. . . . #seniordogslife #instalabs #dogsoftasmania #seniorlabsofinsta #greymuzzleclub

16.01.2022 So good to see our bee friends in Bonnie’s Bowl Kitchen Garden in winter, this one having a rest on a produce bag. I’ve done my best to keep some flowers blooming through the cold for him. What I wish I’d gotten a photo of yesterday though is the kestrel that swooped into the greenhouse to kidnap the blackbird that was scratching up my mulch. That was dramatic! . . . #sprayfree #insectfriendly #beefriendly #beesinwinter #wholisticgardening #kitchengardenfriends

16.01.2022 If you’re out and about this weekend head to Geeveston and visit the Little Black Fridge next door to Bonnie’s Bowl Kitchen Garden. Follow @littleblackfridge on instagram to keep up to date with when the Best Sourdough Bread in the Universe (my title) magically appears, or what other delights there might be like cakes, shortbread biscuits, caramels, crackers and more, that include locally grown and foraged ingredients, made with love by the amazingly skilled and creative Juli...a. Swipe to the last photo to see the expression on Bonnie’s face when I crunch into the perfectly crackly sourdough crust. The look on her face says it all. (All other photos are by the @littleblackfridge ) Follow the signs on Kermandie River Rd. . . . #geeveston #huonvalleylocavores #huonvalleyfarmgates #bestsourdoughevertasted @ Geeveston, Tasmania, Australia See more

14.01.2022 The Cook, multitalented lovely man that he is, built this mobile Chook Palace for our 5 Australorps. I can attach it to the ride-on mower and tow it to the next location in the garden and set up the fencing for them to fertilize and scratch through the soil looking for slugs and bugs. It locks up at night to protect them from quolls, and I can lift the front wall up to clean it out and the other side has panels I can open up to get the eggs (that’s Bonnie checking hopefully ...for eggs in the photo). The chooks thought they were on holiday at a Chook Resort and didn’t get around to laying any eggs until today. Not in the nesting boxes of course. In the teepee I made for them to hide from the eagles in. Hoping for more eggs as the days start getting longer, but the best thing about these girls is their tractoring skills. . . . #chooktractoring #chooktractorsofinstagram #bonniesbowlkitchengarden #cheekydog #australorpsofinstagram #firsteggslaid #happychooks #chookcaravan @ Geeveston, Tasmania, Australia See more

13.01.2022 Spring is around the corner. Rainbows, daffodils from bulbs donated from friends 2 years ago, and vibrant golden eggs from the chooks. Not pictured, because I’m a bit over it: mud. So much mud. . . . #latewinter #huonvalleywinter #huonvalleyrainbows #happychooksgoodeggs #springiscoming

11.01.2022 It begins again. Planting seeds and wishes for a good tomato season. One of my friends pointed out to me recently that I’m always in the process of tomatoes... planting them, pruning them, harvesting them, trying to find places to put them, saving the seeds from them, choosing and planning and preparing for them. And now, in the last month of winter, I start back at the beginning with planting them again. . . . #bonniesbowlkitchengarden #tomatoseeds #openpollinated #seedsaving #itsallaboutthetomatoeshere

02.01.2022 Super Chooks don’t care that it’s minus 3 degrees here this morning. Big Bertha is a bit slow, but she’s always the last one out of the roost anyway. . . . #geevestonfrosts #australorpsaretough #australorpsofinstagram #huonvalleywinter #tinyfarmmornings

02.01.2022 There’s a harsh feeling frost this morning making the Japanese mustard leaves look like they’ve grown fur to warm themselves up. No point tying to pick anything until it all starts to thaw out, or it won’t stay fresh. Hoping it all thaws out to picked in time for people to come and pick up their greens. Meanwhile I cannot feel my feet. Maybe I should wait for thaw inside with a hot cuppa? Or can I grow fur like the mustards? . . . #geevestonfrosts #huonvalleywinters #bonniesbowlkitchengarden #mustardleavesinthefrost #icantfeelmyfeets
