25.01.2022 We've been running regular demonstrations via Zoom for our members every Saturday morning at 10:00am and they've been a great way to keep in touch and talk about what we can be doing with our trees at this time of year. This morning I worked on a crab apple tree that needed a major prune as well as this Juniper that was looking top heavy and lacking proper movement. Everyone pitched in with ideas and I was really pleased with the end result. Thanks everyone! Matt.

25.01.2022 Last year seems an eternity ago but remember last May when Tony Bebb did a demonstration at our meeting on this Japanese Black Pine? It bounced back with strong growth over summer, then the candles were removed to induce a second flush of smaller needles. I recently removed all of Tony's wiring and the thing that struck me was there were no damaged needles despite all the work that he had done. When I wire and manipulate an entire pine tree I always find a few bent or bruised needles a few months later. That's next level professionalism! Matt Sharp - President.

24.01.2022 When iit is dry plant it with your favourite tiny things and add some ornaments if you are a big kid like me. Use muck to plant around the sides and use the wires you glued across to tie the biggest plant in place.

24.01.2022 More photos from the Annual Show! We're open until 3 today at the Goodwood Community Centre. Head on down!

21.01.2022 Hello South Australian Bonsai enthusiasts! Luke Parsons here, Vice President of the S.A. Bonsai Society. There are many native Australian trees that can be grown as bonsai - this morning I began the styling of this Western Myall, acacia papyrocarpa. The branches have been wired to create some of the sinuous movement seen in mature examples of this species. It's early days in the development of this tree as a bonsai, but off to a good start.

19.01.2022 We can all get busy in our gardens. A place for joy and achievement in difficult times.

19.01.2022 Bonsai are not indoor plants, nor are indoor plants bonsai. What they share is that they are all plants that are grown in pots. When growing bonsai we can use tips from growing all potted plants ... Haidi has some sound transferable tips.

19.01.2022 Heres some tree-candy to consider during these trying times. Caste your vote by pressing LIKE on just one of the trees.

19.01.2022 Inorganic soil mixes tend to promote the development of efficient root systems. You can see from this example just how fine and healthy the root structure is for this bonsai. Personally, I still have some organic matter in my soil mixes. Readily available in Adelaide are pumice, scoria, gravel, perlite and vermiculite. Weve previously had access to zeolite (use sparingly) and diatomite.... Enjoy the results.

13.01.2022 Todays news was that piece of information that I didnt want to find out. I was ever hopeful that the 2020 Royal Adelaide Show would proceed; heralding brighter, happier and warmer days ahead. I think that The Royal Adelaide Show was the marker of more promising days, where we would enjoy the precious freedoms wed previously been at liberty to partake. Just like Easter 2020, there will be other Royal Adelaide Shows again; just not this year. #StayAtHome #StaySafe #KindnessWins #BonsaiCompetition #StayHealthy #RoyalAdelaideShow #SABonsaiSociety #DividedWeStandTogetherWeFall

12.01.2022 So it's cold and dark out - maybe not a great time for repotting that tree right now. So get your pencils out and create something new inside instead!

11.01.2022 As the sunlight moves throughout the year, it can be beneficial to move evergreen trees to positions in your garden that receive enough sunlight. Deciduous trees may be left in shady positions for the moment, but will need plenty of light come spring time. So, get out there, build a new bench perhaps, shuffle a few trees around - your evergreen trees will thank you for it.

10.01.2022 I'm sharing these photos and original comments from the post to make a point.

07.01.2022 It is absolutely vital that no one imports plants into Australia, or traffics them to quarantine states, illegally. It does make some plants very expensive, but the cost of illegal importing really is priceless. We just can not afford the risks.

06.01.2022 For this morning's online demonstration we worked on a Crepe Myrtle that had (mostly) shed it's leaves and was ready for a winter trim and cleanup. Deciduous trees like this need a trim and tidy every year after leaf drop to get the tree ready for Spring growth. This Crepe Myrtle is in it's early days of styling so I went quite hard and removed a lot of excess twigs and branches, but it will bounce back with lots of Spring growth. The bottom two branches were left alone to thicken. Matt.

05.01.2022 Some days are good for pruning and weeding, some days are good for fertilizing or repotting, and some days it pays to just indulge your imagination with a handful of pencils

05.01.2022 Our fantastic President Matt Sharp conducting a demonstration at our Annual Show today!

05.01.2022 Hello! Luke Parsons here, Vice President of the South Australian Bonsai Society. On Tuesday we had our first face to face meeting since March. It was well attended, and all had a great time, despite the social distancing requirements. I was really pleased to see so many members joining in with the disussion of deciduous bonsai, which was the topic for the evening. Given the success of this meeting, we will be holding a workshop evening for financial members on Tuesday 18th A...ugust. As always to be held at the Goodwood Community Centre at 7.30pm. Social distancing requirements will still apply, but we'll have a great time all the same. Cheers, Luke. See more

05.01.2022 Hi! Luke Parsons here; Vice President of the SA Bonsai Society. Tonight's meeting topic is BONSAI DESIGN. The start of any good bonsai is a great design. So, if you're attending tonight's meeting at the Goodwood Community Centre, come along ready to share your thoughts, or learn some more, about bonsai design. See you there! Luke.

02.01.2022 Our latest online demo featured this Hackberry (Celtis occidentalis) that had just dropped it's last leaves so it was time to give it a trim and tidy up. These demos are held every Saturday morning for our members and it gives us a chance to catch up and discuss what we can be doing with our trees this time of year. Always something to talk about!

01.01.2022 The weather was extremely kind to us for this weekends dig. So many olives, it was hard to know where to start! Thanks to all attendees who made this a great event.
