23.01.2022 According to a recent report, 428,0000 Aussie drivers, assuming they are paying standard national prices, would be best advised to avoid E10 petroleven if it appears cheaper. Unless the price difference between regular unleaded fuel (also known as 91 RON) and E10 is 4 cents per litre or greater, refuelling with E10 is probably costing you more.

21.01.2022 The Turnbull Government has announced a review into Australia's fuel reserves. Federal Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg announced a review of liquid fuel security. "The assessment is the prudent and proper thing to do to make sure we aren't complacent," he said.... But he argued it should not be construed as Australia having a fuel security problem. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull described the review as "good housekeeping". Fairfax Media reports the country has only a 22-day supply of crude oil, 59 days of LPG, 20 days of petrol, 19 days of aviation fuel and 21 days of diesel. The International Energy Agency expects countries to keep a 90-day supply but Australia has just under 50 days. "The assessment will also help inform Australia's plan to return to compliance with the International Energy Agency's emergency stockholding obligations by 2026," Mr Frydenberg said. "Australia's liquid fuel supply increasingly depends on overseas sources and relies on market forces to maintain reliability and affordability." The last National Energy Security Assessment was conducted in 2011. Australia is currently dependent on imports for most of its fuel needs. The review will be completed by the end of the year.

19.01.2022 RACQ spokeswoman Lucinda Ross said the average price for unleaded petrol in Brisbane had risen to $1.62 per litre the highest figure since July 2014. "We haven't seen a peak over $1.60 in four years, so this really is going to hurt drivers," Ms Ross said. Ms Ross said international factors were partly responsible, but retailers were also taking a big slice of the higher prices.... "We are seeing indicative retail margins of about 23 cents per litre," she said. "Global oil prices have been fluctuating over recent months and we have seen an increase in recent days in those prices so that is some way to understanding what's happening here. "But we also have service stations that are actually taking it to the next level and charging exorbitant prices, so that is really disappointing for Brisbane drivers." The organisation representing fuel retailers said business owners needed to make a return on their investments.

Motorists who can fill up less frequently and therefore buy petrol when prices are falling can save even more. For example, if motorists in Sydney avoided buying E10 on the 10 most expensive days around the peak of the price cycle, they would have paid on average 4.3 cpl less. Motorists who only buy a small amount of petrol when prices are at their peak, waiting until prices are falling before filling up, can also make significant savings.

As a general rule, richer countries have higher prices while poorer countries and the countries that produce and export oil have significantly lower prices. One notable exception is the U.S. which is an economically advanced country but has low gas prices. The differences in prices across countries are due to the various taxes and subsidies for diesel. All countries have access to the same petroleum prices of international markets but then decide to impose different taxes. As a result, the retail price of diesel is different.

11.01.2022 Australian petrol prices have risen to eye-watering levels in recent months, driven higher by a combination of soaring crude prices and weakness in the Australian dollar. According to Australian Institute of Petroleum, the national average price of unleaded petrol jumped 5.1 cents to 149.6 cents a litre last week, coinciding with an end to price discounting during the busy school holiday period. The average metropolitan price surged by 6.7 cents to 149.2 cents per litre, far ...larger than the average 1.5 cent lift in regional prices to 150.4 cents per litre. For stretched household budgets, this is undoubtedly unwelcome news for motorists. However, good news may be on the way. According to Commsec, thanks to recent weakness in global crude prices, wholesale petrol prices now sit near the lowest levels in three months, pointing to the likelihood of declines in pump prices in the weeks ahead.
