24.01.2022 This may help someone identifying her. Healthier picture - Ed #babyboomerinterests #nambourhospitalabandonedelderleylady Sixteen days after a frail, elderly woman was left in distress outside a Sunshine Coast hospital police say they are no closer to finding out who she is. Key points:... The woman is talking to police, but has not given them her name A number of missing persons have been ruled out Police hope a new photo and ring the woman was wearing might help solve the mystery Officers hope a ring the woman was wearing, and new images of her in a "healthier" state will help her be identified and family members come forward. Acting Inspector Matt Robertson said Queensland Police had been looking into various missing persons cases, but suggestions put forward to date had not matched. The woman, believed to be between 80 and 90, was dropped outside the Nambour Hospital on Sunday September 6, by a man who claims he found her in the Mooloolah Valley, more than 20 kilometres away, and wanted to take her to safety. Police said the man indicated he was not the woman's relative, friend or carer, and they had no reason to question "that he's not just just a good Samaritan".

Voluntary assisted dying (euthanasia and assisted dying) (VAD) is a major legal, ethical and social policy issue with significant implications for health systems, health professionals and communities around the world. In Australia, VAD is lawful in Victoria in limited circumstances, and is expected to commence in Western Australia in mid-2021. VAD is not lawful in other Australian States and Territories, though this may change in the future as other jurisdictions consider law reform in this area

10.01.2022 A message to our KIWI Boomers- Ed #babyboomerinterests #nzseniors Introducing the Minister for Seniors, Hon Dr Ayesha Verrall How do you feel about your new role?... It was a complete surprise to get appointed to cabinet as that doesn’t happen to many new MPs, so I’m both humbled and honoured to be the Minister for Seniors. If I’m completely honest I’d say I’m a little nervous too simply because I’m now representing an incredibly large and important group of New Zealanders and I really want to do a good job. There are some strong connections between my portfolio responsibilities though, especially between Seniors and Associate Health, so that should help. What are the main seniors issues you are looking forward to working on? In the short term, I’m looking forward to getting out and talking to as many people involved in the sector as possible to find out what they think and want. But the Government’s priorities in this space are progressing the Better Later Life strategy, dementia, and having an Aged Care Commissioner. What is your long-term vision for New Zealand’s seniors and ageing population? I support the goals in the new strategy, Better Later Life He Oranga Kaumatua. All New Zealanders should be able to live and age well. But my view is also shaped by my personal experience. I’ve worked a number of years in hospitals and that involves seeing people at a difficult time in their lives and it provides insight into so much more: their families; housing; finances; and their care and support. We have to recognize that some people need more and different help than others, and age definitely shouldn’t be a barrier in providing that. I’m also well aware that ‘seniors’ aren’t a group of people who are all the same. Like all our population our over-65s are increasingly diverse and government policies and services need to recognize that. What is your message for the holiday season? Every time Christmas rolls around is special because it’s about spending time with those dear to us, but this year that’s particularly true. I just hope everyone gets to be with friends and family over this time and we can look forward to a much better 2021.

06.01.2022 She has no name, and it appears no family or friends. An elderly lady, left outside Nambour Hospital in Queensland, one Sunday afternoon earlier this month. Nambour, on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, is not too big but this woman stood out. She was distressed, agitated, and abandoned by a man, who disappeared down Hospital Road. Now, 16 days later, she’s been moved to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, and it appears we don’t know much more. But do we really care? I do an...Continue reading

04.01.2022 Great initiative from Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate. Should be more of it all around OZ-Ed #babyboomerinterests #freeseniortravel #bonzaidea Great news with free seniors and veterans bus travel now extended to the weekend. The extended program will also allow free travel all day long on Saturday and Sunday. The expansion of the Free Seniors Travel program to include weekends is timely with the holiday season coming up.... This initiative improves the quality of life for some of our more vulnerable citizens and empowers them to travel independently every day of the week. With more than 40,000 people already registered for the program, this is a great outcome for our seniors. The program currently enables seniors and veterans to travel for free weekdays between 8.30am and 3.30pm. Since the program began in 2013, more than six million trips have been made by Gold Coast seniors and veterans on Surfside buses. It is important that we ensure our seniors and veterans have a safe, accessible, comfortable and affordable way to travel around the city. Reducing demand on the city’s road network is a key focus. Free bus travel for seniors and veterans forms part of the City’s Road Safety Plan and is a key initiative of the Gold Coast City Transport Strategy 2031. To be eligible for free bus travel, passengers must hold a TransLink Seniors red go card or a Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) gold or white card, be a Gold Coast resident and complete an application. Registered veterans and seniors are provided with a sticker to attach to their go card which they simply show to the bus driver when they board. You can download an application form at cityofgoldcoast.com.au/freebustravel, collect one from a City Customer Service Centre or phone 1300 GOLDCOAST (1300 465 326) and one will be mailed to you.
