24.01.2022 Booberoi Creek update September 2020 Following the desilting of the first section of Booberoi Creek, snags were put back into the desilted area for habitat and bank protection that are designed to not impede flow. Fish samples were taken overnight upstream and downstream of the major weirs on Booberoi Creek which held water as important refuge pools. The general idea was to check on fish populations given the long period of no flows. As expected, long sections of the creek we...re dry, or extremely shallow and covered in Azolla, the small, red fern-like plant that floats on the surface. At both of the weir pool sites, there were massive numbers of small native fish, as well as shrimp. This is a good sign for the re-start of the creek, as it suggests that once the re-start occurs, the populations in the weir pools will likely re-colonise the rest of Booberoi Creek. Carp and goldfish were sampled in the site downstream of one weir, where they were stuck in the shallow, retracted pool directly below the weir. One of the most interesting aspects of this sampling was the fact that no juvenile carp were found, whereas they are already present in Lake Cargelligo. This suggests that during prolonged periods of no-flow, carp recruitment/breeding is likely to be subdued within Booberoi Creek. It will be interesting to see if this changes once the flow resumes and fish from the river can access Booberoi again. 24.01.2022 Local bird count #198 WHITE-BELLIED CUCKOO-SHRIKE Found in northern and eastern Australia but by far the least common Cuckoo-shrike in the Lake Cargelligo area.... We found this one today high up in the trees at Booberoi Creek. After good rains yesterday (yay!) the birds were busy and plentiful - just a short walk up the creek and we saw Eastern Yellow Robins, Rufous Whistler, Sulphur-crested Cockatoos, Brown Treecreeper, Splendid Fairy-wrens, Rainbow bee-eaters just to name a few. Then we heard the SQUEEK. It sounded like someone was squeezing a babies squeeky toy. SQUEEK SQUEEK! Listening is so important and helpful when looking for birds. We knew instantly there was something unusual in the trees above and then, there, it was! A squeeky white-bellied medium sized bird with a black mask. Good rain and a new bird, you ripper.

Existing to support disengaged and at-risk youth, the project is run by Lana Masterson and Katy Quinn and participants engage in a range of activities everything from catering to shearing - that...Continue reading

14.01.2022 Update: 13 September WaterNSW, Cobar Shire Council, DPIEEES, DPI Fisheries, Lake Cowal Foundation, CEWO and Booberoi Creek landholders have worked together over several months for a great outcome for the environment and water users. Due to great communication, coordination and collaboration Booberoi Creek has started to flow again! The temporary block bank at the regulator was removed over the weekend and the water has now been confirmed it is in the creek well beyond th...e works and on Saturday confirmed it’s flowing well past the 3.5km mark at good walking pace. Thanks again to WaterNSW and all the contractors for working non-stop to get this happening sooner than first expected. The regulator remains closed but due to the high passing flows in the Lachlan River, there is flow over the stop boards down the creek. Thanks to Cobar Shire Council for getting the emergency repairs on the bridge done in rapid time and confirming we can restart the creek proper and ramp up to higher flows to test the capacity of off-take channel now the desilting has been done. The new gauge board in the creek is reading 0.42 metres, and tidying up of the rock at the off-take regulator should be finished mid next week. Environmental water managers will continue to liaise with WaterNSW about ‘restarting the creek proper’ by the 30th September and aim to flush the creek with a large fresh in the coming weeks but aim to start slowly to allow the works to settle and stabilise the banks. Thanks to DPI Fisheries for their advice on these and other matters. The silt build-up close to the regulator was 300mm deep and gradually increased and was between 800mm to 1850mm deep. There was also a 4 foot high weir of natural rock - these rocks were a foot out of the creek and had 3 foot of silt removed around them. DPIEEES also facilitated some levels being taken (survey) pre and post-desilting. The channel base fall from the Offtake Regulator sill to the road bridge is now 145cm (after desilting) as compared to 32cm prior to desilting works. The channel base fall from the Offtake sill to the overhead pipe (downstream of bridge) at the end of works is a total of 167cm, and to the top of the silt (immediately downstream of overhead pipe) commencement is 103cm. It will be interesting to track the efficiency of the creek now the works are complete and any observations by creek users welcomed. See more
