21.01.2022 Travellers’ Notebook customised insert no.1: WRITINGS The most ‘contentious’ of the travel journal’s little books, my 8yo’s homework task was to write a couple of (tiny) pages every day while away in Hawaii. As you can see, my boy is not a big fan of handwriting, and it cracks me up that at one point on the trip he crossed out uesing the jornal (his spelling) as one of the things he was looking forward to! Occasionally I offered to be his scribe, which he liked, but ultimately we ended up just sharing the task of family travel journaller and filled the pages together. I love his little sketches (even if he used them to fill up the page in lieu of dreaded writing ), they are things from his own unique 8yo perspective. @ Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

20.01.2022 Trio of cute travel journals just custom made for a little girl and her two girl cousins. Her mum supplied the papers inside and chose the spritely colours for the covers (that remind me somewhat of licorice allsorts), a simple hemp-leaf stab-binding in white thread, and away these sweet journals will travel soon... @ Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

20.01.2022 In the wake of Australia’s recent devastating bushfires (and then floods), there came an opportunity to take part in a compassionate project... My creative friend @suzonfuks asked if I’d like to contribute something towards the #LoveBoxes initiative organised by the @CreativeRecoveryNetwork, which bundles together packs of creative kindness to be gifted to people and families affected by natural disasters (www.creativerecovery.net.au/love-boxes for more details). And so, thes...e ‘Seed Books’ were an idea that spun out of the process of thinking up something bookish to contribute to 50 or so Love Boxes. Having recently been making eco-printed papers with the Qld Spinners & Weavers ‘book & paper group’, I knew there was a bounty of these beautiful papers that members might kindly donate to the Seed Book cause, and donate they did, not just their eco-printed papers but also bundles of seed packets, and also their time to fold a few books. And thus a collaborative project was born, and we are about to achieve our goal to give 50 handmade books filled with packets of seeds and handwritten cards/messages to fill the Creative Recovery Network’s Love Boxes. In terms of #healing, CRN says it best with this: In terms of the Seed Books themselves, they are of such a simple design that I questioned whether they’d merit high enough to be included for #AYBE, but then I realised that the strength of this project wasn’t in the physical design concept, but in the beauty of its ability to bring together 25 or so creative women (from three different craft groups) to collectively craft for a good cause. A simple concertina-folded pocketed book, pamphlet stitched to a unique eco-printed cover, and then filled with a thoughtful gift of seeds and a heartfelt message - the seeds, of course, imply the hope of new growth, new beginnings, and of time well spent with Nature. And as a complete package, each Seed Book is a gift to our community, to show connection and compassion, and a reminder that the recipient is not alone - all key to the complex and personal process of healing. #AYBE_heal #areyoubookenough_heal #areyoubookenough #SeedBooks #ecoprinting #CreateRecover #ArtsRespond @ Brisbane, Queensland, Australia See more

19.01.2022 Coincidentally the wattle is in full blossom here in Brisbane and I have recently completed this book much inspired by our Australian floral emblem Created as a letter book for correspondence between friends located across the Tasman Sea (between NZ and Australia), Golden Wattle is a wrap-around journal incorporating a variety of interesting papers and ephemera, including vintage books, a book plate and telegram, inside a soft suede cover lined with a botanical wallpaper. ...Bound together using a customized 3-section binding to form vertical ‘branches’ in eucalypt-green linen thread, further embellished with yellow French knots to resemble wattle blossoms. The magnetic closure and dual gold ribbon ties take their inspiration from the guitar illustration in the children’s storybook within the journal. Size: A5 Materials: suede leather, ribbon, wallpaper, found papers/ephemera, waxed linen and embroidery thread. @ Brisbane, Queensland, Australia See more

16.01.2022 This here is my current (custom made) bullet journal - the cover is created from a vintage French music book + three vintage matchbox labels collaged across it. Inside the cover, I’ve used some of that indigo cyanotype-y handmade paper. Lots of different papers throughout (most inkjet printed with grid pattern) and vintage blueprint as the centre spread. Every few months or so, I make up a new bullet journal, each one unique, but together making a lovely matching set. Added ...to today’s bullet journaling to-do list: post something on Instagram (it’s been wayyyy too long) photograph stack of previous bullet journals for tomorrow’s Instagram post #gettingbacktothegram #bulletjournaling #bulletjournal #vintagepaper #vintagematchboxlabels #handmadebooks See more

14.01.2022 Real-life bookbinding workshops are back on again!...four different classes on offer between now and the end of 2020. First up, wrap-around leather journals, next Sunday 12th July. Time to get out the leathers and the bookbinding tools again @ Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

12.01.2022 This here is a little project I began back in January - a re-bind of a small vintage copy of The Three Little Pigs as my submission for the #areyoubookenough_shelter theme (yes, yes, I know, always behind schedule ). Over the next few posts I’m hoping to show its development and transformation into a nicely interactive and sculptural book piece... #threelittlepigs #vintagebook #rebinding... #booksculpture #areyoubookenough #shelter See more

10.01.2022 Travellers’ Notebook customised insert no.2: SKETCHINGS This one was a bit experimental... I created this second insert with a cover made from ink-blotted watercolour paper (300gsm) and a whole lot of different loose-leaf papers inside, all held together by a turquoise elastic strap. The idea was that the kids or I could grab a sheet, do a sketch during our travels, and the pages could be added to, switched around, or discarded as required. It kept the Sketchings notebook really flexible, and not at all precious! If it ever reaches a complete state (we’re still adding to it, weeks after the trip), I can always stitch it like the other notebooks... @ Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

09.01.2022 Recently challenged to creatively bind a copy of Judith Ellis’s British book ‘Curlew Coast - Diversions on Maritime Suffolk’, I drew inspiration from the book’s main theme: that the history of the Suffolk coast is linked to the changing topography of its shore, that ‘the coast is a shifting thing’. And so, the bound book represents the formation of a coastline, with each page being individually shaped, and it’s eleven sections layered to create a rippled, contoured fore-edge.... And as the fore-edge alludes to the water, the book’s cover speaks of the land... silt, sand, shingle, peat, heath, fertile soil, crag. Traditional bookbinding materials (paper and leather) have been reimagined in a geographical context, a literal layering of elements that poetically capture the essence of a coastal landscape. As a nod to the maritime use of rope, natural Irish linen thread binds the book together using a modified Longstitch technique to create the form of a fishnet (with its single red herring) across the book’s spine. Laid out flat with the cover facing up, the white grid takes on the graphic look of map lines applied to a geographic chart. The book’s non-adhesive binding (and cork leather cover) lends it a softness that allows it to be handled in a dynamic way. Its page edges shift and flow like the coastline on which it is based. And yet, it can still be opened (completely flat) and read just like any traditional codex book, albeit with a little extra tactile dimensionality and interactivity #curlewcoast #judithellis #bookdesign #suffolk #coast #coastline #redherring #longstitch #corkleather #handmadepaper @ Brisbane, Queensland, Australia See more

06.01.2022 So I’ve been a bullet journal convert since the beginning of 2018, when I tried the ‘system’ using a couple of cute, gridded, #etrangerdicostatica notebooks I’d bought in Tokyo - they were an unusual 13 x 18cm, slightly smaller than A5, but fit in my bag perfectly. So my BuJo books 1 & 2 were just store-bought notebooks that I had on hand, but when I came to need more books, I began to custom-make my own to match the size of the first two. With book 3 (yellow) I used a vinta...ge sheet-music cover into which I hand stitched a single folded section of 10 sheets of cartridge paper which I’d inkjet printed with the same grid. I loved the heavier weight and the toothy texture so much that I continued to use it in all the subsequent BuJo notebooks I made. By book 7 I started to include a couple of other types of paper into the bookblock (which made excellent ‘feature’ spreads/pages) and I’d also started to line inside the covers to strengthen them with interesting papers (marbled, handmade, fancy giftwrap prints). Also, it was by this point I realised a Travellers-Notebook-style leather cover, with a nifty elastic closure, would serve well to protect my BuJo notebooks from their daily handling, so I custom-made one with black leather lined with spotty grey Japanese paper, which (oh joy) also nicely holds my pencil!... #bulletjournal #bulletjournaling #bujo #handmadebooks #vintagepapers #travellersnotebook See more

02.01.2022 It’s been a double holiday over here. First, the recent family holiday to Hawaii, and second, a wee break from IG (which we can all do with from time to time). I customised this little red travellers’ notebook to be our family’s collective travel journal during our visit to Hawaii - to sit inside the cherry-red leather wrap, I created three passport-sized notebooks/sketchbooks. One is for Field Notes (shell cover), one is for Writings (lava cover), and the last is for Sketchings (turquoise watercolour cover, loose leaf pages, elastic strap). Some internal photos to follow... @ Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
