22.01.2022 The Witches (Graphic Novel) The Witches was one of my favourite books as a kid, so I was a bit apprehensive when I heard that they had adapted it in to a graphic novel. However, I absolutely adore this version by Penelope Bagieu, the adaptor and illustrator. She fine tunes Dahl’s timeless story of a young boy and his Grandmamma, who take on the vicious witches of England and breathes new life into it, making it her own. The illustrations are bright, engaging and funny. It i...s also so heartfelt and then scary the next, which is no mean feat to accomplish. It balances the dark humour of the story so well with the core message of family, love and good overcoming evil. This is a book which kids will read again and again. I especially love this version of Grandmamma, she was so feisty and loving and it is great to see an older character that has flaws and their own emotions too. I may have shed a tear with this wonderful Grandmamma. One of my favourite things about this edition is that it keeps Dahl’s original ending, which even as a kid I preferred to the 1990 movie ending. I recommend this to all Roald Dahl fans new and old alike. -- Emma, BOOK FACE Bookseller See more

19.01.2022 THE GREATEST HIT by Will Kostakis A short (and cheap) little book that I absolutely adored. This young adult novella follows Tessa as she experiences her first time at college, only to find that her ex is in one of her classes. Worse follows when everyone discovers that Tessa is the girl from a viral song that she’s trying to outrun. I highly recommend giving this little book a go. It’s a great sample into Will Kostakis’s other works, with phenomenal writing and relatable ...characters. ‘The Greatest Hit’ is a short little story about owning up and righting your wrongs. Such a fun read. For fans of Rainbow Rowell, Adam Silvera, and Becky Albertalli. - Tash, BOOK FACE Bookseller See more

17.01.2022 OF MICE AND MEN by John Steinbeck Of Mice and Men is a must read. The story follows two characters, George and Lennie, as they work on The Ranch trying to achieve their dream of owning a farm. I had to read this book as part of school curriculum, and ended up really enjoying it. The story was well written so it was an easy read. The book could be seen as depressing as the ending was heartbreaking, but it also had its nice parts. Overall, I would recommend this book to high school students and above. - Cameron, BOOK FACE Bookseller

16.01.2022 THIS TENDER LAND by William Kent Krueger A tender masterpiece is how I can best describe this book. I purchased this book from a customer recommendation and absolutely did not regret it, so thankyou Laura! Set during the great depression of the 1930’s, four orphans from a Native American orphanage set off on a journey of a lifetime to find where they might belong in this world. The children have been poorly treated at the school and have no choice but to leave. They quic...kly learn that the world is a cruel place where no one can be trusted. They’ll meet many characters along the way, each impacting the children differently and ultimately leading them to a fate they may have not anticipated. This book tugs at your heart. I will admit to crying more than once. It deals with loss in so many forms, but also the faith to survive and move forward and the need to forgive. - Kim, BOOK FACE Bookseller See more

15.01.2022 In a Holidaze by Christina Lauren With a cover that screamed a great read for the festive season, In a Holidaze was a lovely read following the life decisions of Mae. Stuck in a rut living at home, she loves the certainty of the annual family Christmas trip to the snowy cabin. Every day, every tradition is always the same. Until her world comes crashing down when she is told the cabin will be sold. Devastated she makes one simple wish, Show me what will make me happy.... Mae finds herself trapped in her own groundhog day, waking to find she is repeating her last holiday at the cabin, over and over. She isn’t quite sure what can be changed, why it needs to be changed, or if she has any impact on the final outcome she already knows is coming. In a Holidaze was a nice light hearted read, but packed a punch in the life lessons department. One quote from Mae sprung off the page, I’m just seeing things with fresh eyes, I guess. It made me wonder, if you could do anything again, how would you do it differently? After a couple of repeated days, Mae starts to think nothing is going to make a difference and decides to just throw caution to the wind and do everything exactly as she wants, nothing holding her back. It turns out simply allowing herself the freedom to live was what Mae needed all along. Her decisions and results aren’t always sunshine and rainbows, but it is all her which I loved. In 2020, in the year that we’ve had, In a Holidaze left me with a sense of c’est la vie. Live life to the fullest. Do what makes you happy. Most importantly, be kind to yourself. - Jenny BOOK FACE bookseller See more

14.01.2022 HONEYBEE by CRAIG SILVEY Every once in a while there will be a book that stays with you long after you have finished it. A book that you will recommend to everyone, that has changed you in some way, that you love so much you just wish you could read it for the first time again. That book is Honeybee for me. We start the story meeting Sam a 14 year old who climbs over the rail of an overpass, ready for it all to end. There he meets Vic, an old man who has the same idea a...s Sam. From here the two develop a connection and the story of how both came to be at the bridge unfolds. The heart and soul of the story is Sam, who has had a very rough time in life and who has struggled to accept their true self. The book takes us on a journey involving petty crime, mental health and drug issues, identity struggles, cooking, making your own family and one very amazing drag show (that chapter was seriously awesome). I loved so much about this book. The characters are really well developed. Sam is a wonderful teen who I just wanted to wrap in a hug. They have overcome so much and have felt so unloved and unwanted for such a long time. To read their struggles and then their growth and acceptance throughout the book is beautiful. Vic is also a very wonderfully developed character and I think a lot of people will know of a Vic in their lives he is a very relatable, a man who has come back from war and who doesn’t talk of it. His acceptance of Sam broke my heart Mate, I think you’re just you, and there’s nothing the matter with that. The story is so heart-wrenching and heart-warming at the same time. A lot of people have asked if it is like Jasper Jones (because they either loved or hated it) and to me they are completely separate and I didn’t find myself comparing the two. This was a book I immediately bought (because I did enjoy Jasper Jones) but knew that I would probably delay reading it for a while (because the cover did nothing for me). But my friend told me I needed to read it right away and I am so happy I did. This book proves you shouldn’t judge a book completely by the cover and you should give authors a second chance (if you are not a fan of Jasper Jones). This book has easily become one of my favourite books of the year and has fast become one of my favourites of all time. It is a book that I can see becoming a modern classic. Fans of contemporary fiction, LGBT stories, coming of age stories, stories of finding your people and accepting who you are despite a rough start this book is for you. I cannot recommend this book enough.

08.01.2022 THE ASSASSINATION OF BRANGWAIN SPURGE by M.T Anderson and Eugene Yelchin A hilarious story aimed at kids 10+. ‘The Assassination of Brangwain Spurge’ contains some chapters that are told in illustration and others in word. This unique and witty novel follows three characters; Brangwain Spurge (the elfin emissary and historian), Werfel (the goblin ambassador and archivist), and Lord Clifers (the evfin spymaster). It is up to Brangwain Spurge to infiltrate the goblin kingdom a...nd spy on the evil government, but is this mission even possible? A quirky but extremely fun novel set to impress. I devoured this book, it was equally hilarious, embarrassing, and enjoyable. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for something to take them away from reality for a little while. It's also a National Book Award Finalist. - Tash, BOOK FACE Bookseller See more
