25.01.2022 Books we've been loving lately, although we had to take a sanity break after a too much 1980's fashion! Shown are, Rare '2001 Space Odyssey' promotional brochure 1968, the seminal Robin Boyd book on Australian architectural design and planning, Bob Dylan's lost poems from 1968 discovered again in 2006, printed alongside the photos that inspired them, and 'The Great Aussie Fashion', wonderful large p'back of the trendiest designers of the time. Get in touch.

25.01.2022 Type & Design books for Arty Types

25.01.2022 We have just become aware of an article published by the Daily Mail in Sydney and are extremely disappointed in its tone and nature, especially the accompanying photographs. We ask that people disregard this article and refrain from making vitriolic and hurtful comments. Everyone has the right to complain and our issue was more about the way the complaint was handled. AGAIN, we are overwhelmed with the support shown us and are buoyed by the positive energy. The Bookhouse family.

24.01.2022 To Serge Thomann and all. As we have stated, we would prefer that the details of our situation not be 'explained' by you at tonight's meeting. Since the issue became public we have had many responses from Council and other interested parties and most, if not all has been inaccurate. I have already had the CoPP amend a press release and take down a misleading fbook post. It has been our experience that CoPP is not fully cognisant with all the facts and we now wish to deal wi...th the matter privately with the Council. Can we also say that we have been dealing with this issue for 9 months, and 2 months ago after 'failing to prove' that the premises was a shop, and being served with a 28 day notice to cease trading (extended by another 28 days), the only option suggested to us by Council was "you could go to VCAT". There was never a letter of support from Council, or any other contact, so Margot and I, after exhausting ourselves financially and emotionally, decided we couldn't go on in such uncertain circumstances. To be clear, we had no help until the matter became public and our decision to leave WAS NOT made AFTER Council offers of help, but well before. Ben & Margot

23.01.2022 To Serge Thomann and all. We would like to clarify your comments and our experience. Yes, we have appreciated your involvement in trying to resolve this matter, however your statement is incorrect regarding Councils response to the planning decision. The only correspondence we received from Council after the Refusal to Issue notice on March 17, was a follow up letter from Planning Compliance requiring us to cease trading as a retail outlet within 28 days. This would have ...been May 5th. We requested a further period of 30 days, which was granted, which gave us until June 6th. At no stage have we received correspondence from Council stating that no action would be taken against until the matter was resolved. The fact that we received a letter from Planning Compliance for us to cease trading, supports this. What Council has failed to mention is that in January 2014, Port Phillip Planning gave us a permit to install a light box outside the property. This permit was only issued after the Planning Department was satisfied we proved eligibility as a fully functional shop for the last 15 years. We included this in our submission in response to the complaint, and also verbally made planning aware of it. The verbal response back was "that should never have been issued". There was no explanation and no follow up. No mention was made of this document and it's obvious significance in the Refusal to Issue notice. We have felt unsupported by Port Phillip Council. Regarding the decision to close the book shop, we have made a decision to move on from 52 Robe St, because for the last 9 months we have been unable to grow our business whilst waiting for the outcome of the dispute. This has taken a toll both personally and financially. We ARE NOT closing our business. It's just that we are not prepared to operate in an uncertain environment any longer and as it is impossible to grow a business whilst in limbo. We are overwhelmed by the support shown to us by the people of St Kilda and beyond and dearly grateful. We are considering our future. We are thankful to the property owner for his support and we will assist him in any way with his future plans for the property. Ben and Margot See more

20.01.2022 Latest update. Just before walking into tonight's Council meeting, Tracey Slatter, CEO of Port Phillip, rang us to seek clarification of our comments in response to the posts by Serge Thomann and Andrew Bond. It has emerged that we were never sent the letter "approximately six weeks ago" assuring us that the Council "would not take any action to have the book shop closed until the matter was properly resolved". This was, she said "a bureaucratic stuff up" and apologised. ...She was under the impression that we had received it six weeks ago. She has since sent a letter through to us. What a great shame this matter was mishandled to the point where we find ourselves now. See more

Early Police Force - Origin of Place Names - Waratah Bay..... right through to Issue 90. Early Melbourne Hotels etc etc. Just bloody amazing stuff. Lots of photos. I'm selling them as one lot $350. 16.01.2022 For all of you who have been asking after us and what we are up to, for the next few months we will be appearing under the Atrium at Federation Square every Saturday. Management has invited us, as they want to reinvigorate the book market to reflect the 'cultural and artistic surroundings' . So if you are in 'TOWN' on a Saturday, come and say hello. This week we will have a focus on fashion books (Spring is in the air) and some interesting architecture and design books from a large collection. We have found the best place to have coffee, 22 metres from our tables, and MOVIDA at 89 metres will be our 5pm debrief venue. A few pics of what we have and where we'll be.

16.01.2022 A fashionable long weekend here. Open all day Monday too.

12.01.2022 Sorting through mags. Vogue Feb. 2005. I'm getting a strong whiff of hubris methinks.

09.01.2022 Re 'Talking Bookhouse and Positive Change in St Kilda'. This morning we were contacted by Amanda Fairbanks (the dressmaker who ran her shop at 52 Robe St). She was contacted by Serge Thomann this morning who was seeking information on her business practices. This is the first contact she has had at any stage from the city of Port Phillip. ... May we highlight, that in good faith we signed a Commercial Lease for 'Retail Premises not Located in Retail Shopping Centres'. This was the same lease that Amanda Fairbanks signed. In light of the above, that Port Phillip is still seeking information on this case at this late stage and that they have already posted misinformation regarding our situation, we have chosen NOT to attend the meeting tonight. We feel that we don't want to discuss the details of our case tonight in this arena, and are requesting that Serge Thomann refrains from discussing the details of our case in our absence. We appreciate all your interest in our situation and hope that you can use tonight's arena to discuss issues around positive change in St Kilda. Ben & Margot

03.01.2022 Does anyone know who is behind the anonymous posters popping up around town? To be clear, it NOT US.

02.01.2022 Dear all, here we are are 6 weeks down the track from closing the doors on our much loved 52 Robe St shop. The paper is back up on the window, which we assume will be pleasing to only one person in St Kilda! We moved 150 boxes of books AND, just because we can't say no, another 40 boxes from 2 local house lots. So while our son Bede uses the space for photo sessions before final handover, we have been busy planning our next projects. We will have an email out next Monday 8...th highlighting some interesting new books and mags, including super scarce 1960 editions of the Danish 'Mobilia' magazine and other design delights. If you haven't signed up see the link above or sign up a bookhousestkilda.com.au AND ALSO, You'll be able to visit us again in the near future.....details soon. See more
