25.01.2022 Why leading author Jackie French AM is terrified for our book industry and cherished Australian books: For me Christmas is a time of love and giving books. But as an author, reader, grandmother, this Christmas is also one where I must wait, terrified for both the industry and the Australian books I cherish and wish to share with generations of kids to come. This year the spectre of the Productivity Commissions report is The Grinch that Stole Christmas. "Malcolm Turnbu...ll has announced hes reading Diary of a Wombat to his grandchildren this Christmas. But if the Productivity Commission has its way, the royalties from that book will no longer flow to Australia, and the industry that produces iconic Australian books will vanish. "If you want your grandchildren to keep reading books like Diary of a Wombat and Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes, Mr Turnbull, please give our industry certainty this Christmas." 25.01.2022 Here in The Conversation Distinguished Professor David Throsby AO of the Economics Department, Macquarie University shares why the Aus government should leave things as they are when it comes to books and copyright

24.01.2022 In this time of fracture we need more than ever the things that can bring us together as people, not fear, not the resentments of the many, carefully cultivated to cloak the privilege of the few, but the hope of a society that might discover in books the possibility of a shared humanity. Of a better future. Together. We need to fight for it. We must not give up. Richard Flanagan Penguin Books Australia Australian Society of Authors Australian Publishers Association #BooksCreate

23.01.2022 Tom Keneally on keeping PIRs I would like to invite my old friend, Malcolm Turnbull, to make this a bipartisan matter. Books are not toothbrushes, interchangeable with each other, they involve the immeasurable and the imagination in a way that other products do not. This does not mean we want Australian readers to be bilked in buying them. Comparison with New Zealand, which has done away with PIR, show the book prices there are no cheaper. But the range, oh the range! -- it is gone.

23.01.2022 Just released! Australian Innovation System Report 2016 from the office of the Chief Economist, Australian Government. "An important innovation activity is Research and Development (R&D). Despite having a high proportion of innovation-active businesses, Australia has a relatively low proportion of businesses that are R&D-active". Our local publishing industry currently invests $120M annually of R&D money into Australian writers. Full report here http://bit.ly/2gtYF4B an interesting read.

22.01.2022 Many thanks to our wonderfully supportive Aussie book industry and to all of the readers out there! "Miles Franklin said: Without an indigenous literature, people can remain alien in their own soil. Without writers, our inner lives, as well as the inner life of the nation, would remain alien to us. We would not know who we had come from and we would not know who we are. Much as Watson and Crick discovered the helix inside us, writers reveal our cultural, our national, DNA." 19.01.2022 Thank you to everyone for cherishing our local book industry for now and for the future. "I write for kids because the best way to inspire them to fight for a good future for our species, our country and our world, is to help them love it - and the things in it - from wombats to the stars. If we want an Australian industry that profitably mines asteroids in thirty years time, give kids books. Creativity is contagious. You catch it from books. Its muscle building for the brain" Jackie French #bookscreate

16.01.2022 Australian authors take Canberra this week!

16.01.2022 On her book, Reckoning, and writing in particular, Magda Szubanski Text Publishing, My book does not exist in isolation. It is a conversation, a response to other books, other writers. As I read I am stimulated and provoked. Each authors thoughts and ideas land in my mind with a thud, sending my own thoughts scurrying in a thousand different directions. And I have no choice but to chase after those thoughts, to run them down on paper. I become part of a cultural chain reaction. That conversation is informed and safeguarded by copyright, the lever for reward that encourages every creator to write. And to dream. #Bookscreate

14.01.2022 If we are to keep a level playing field and give Australian publishers and emerging writers a fair chance to compete with the best in the world, we need PIRs to remain in force Andy Griffiths Pan Macmillan Australia Australian Publishers Association Australian Society of Authors #BooksCreate

13.01.2022 We ask Australian author, avid reader and PM Malcolm Turnbull and his Government to also stand up for the Australian book industry. Our industry doesnt rely on government subsidy to enrich our country with innovation, jobs, local investment, growth, ideas and culture! Removing PIRs wont give tangible consumer benefits but will destroy 20,000 local jobs and risk great Australian stories written by great Australian writers of today and by those yet to be born. Read on to find out more. Highlight this issue with your MP today!

12.01.2022 IMAGINATION IS NOT A COMMODITY Tony Burke MP on ABC News Watch why the Australian Labor Party agrees that PIRs should remain in Australia "The exact proposal that the Government is currently considering has been tried in New Zealand and when New Zealand did it, the range of books collapsed, it went down by 34%. ... "There was a shift in price. It went down 14% but over the same period where we didnt make that change, we had a drop in prices by 25% and the range of books expanded. "What you lose, no matter which way you look at it, are the stories of your own country being told. "Imagination is not a commodity."

11.01.2022 On where Australias book industry is today, Tim Winton Penguin Books Australia celebrates the journey. Australia has survived its colonial era. Its too cute to say weve left it behind completely, but in my lifetime weve striven to out-think and out grow it. Weve begun to sing and dance and play and write and, yes, to legislate our way past a colonial existence" "Books like Possum Magic, The Book Thief, The Narrow Road to the Deep North, The True History of the Kelly Gan...g, The Slap, The Secret River - all these were fruits of a publishing culture that allowed its writers to speak to their own, a culture that nurtured these writers long enough for them to break out. And, of course to publish - from home to the world - on just and logical terms." And Wintons hope for the future of our wonderful book industry, "I want to see it continue to mature and develop and prosper. I love its myriad stories, its particularities, its peculiar sounds. And thats not one monolithic story or voice, by the way. Its the voice of Steve Irwin, say, but also the voice of Lee Lin Chin; its the sounds of Gurrumul and Katie Noonan; the stories of Tom Keneally and of Alexis Wright."

10.01.2022 Thank you for listening, Tony Burke MP on behalf of the readers, writers, publishers, booksellers, book printers and all employed by our dynamic and efficient Australian book industry. Long may Australian books be in abundance!

09.01.2022 To all the passionate readers - thank you! "And when Ive been published overseas, distinct Australian words have been transformed into Brit or Yank speak to make it easier for the foreign reader. So stroller became push chair, ute became pickup truck. Ghastly. Clunky and suspicious to the the Aussie eye. This is what local readers can expect to see in Australian stories if parallel importation is introduced here. Our consumers, who are passionate about their local industry, need to be able to read their own stories in their own beautifully distinct and extremely colourful language." Nikki Gemmell #bookscreate

06.01.2022 ANDY GRIFFITHS, AUTHOR OF THE FASTEST SELLING BOOK OF THE DECADE IN AUSTRALIA (UNLESS ANDY LEE JUMPS IT IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS!!) ASKS THIS: The changes that your government has proposed to the Australian book industry will result in fewer local publishers, authors and booksellers. This means fewer Australian stories being told. How do our kids benefit from a change that will deny them access to the books that tell their story and celebrate our unique humour? #BooksCreate

04.01.2022 I am perhaps the first generation of Australian authors to have Australian books as my childhood mentors and companions. I never dreamed that in my sixties I would need to fight for the Australian literature industry. 03.01.2022 The following are extracts from Di Morrissey on the importance of PIRs "Australians are big readers and book buyers, and they support local authors. We like stories about who we are, where we live..." "Some critics say that,... if an Australian manuscript is any good, it will be picked up by a publisher overseas just as readily as here. As if. Nice to think so."... "Just as we tend to prefer our stories that reflect us and our culture, so do foreign publishers favour their own. I once had an American publisher comment that he liked my novel The Last Mile Home, set in 1950s New England NSW, but, Could I move the story to Iowa in the 1980s. "Australian authors know, that without a pro-active publisher behind us, we wouldnt be where we are. We also know that the profits we make help a publisher take risks and publish more experimental books, special interest books, and take a punt on a first time author." #bookscreate Read the full article here http://bit.ly/25neBtF

01.01.2022 Im not looking for an easy ride for either myself or my publisher, but I am most definitely looking for a level playing field. I want Australian publishers to be able to confidently invest in Australian authors without the possibility that if these authors are subsequently published overseas and that these overseas editions - produced in larger quantities for larger populations and therefore at a lower cost per unit - would then be imported by Australian booksellers to compete with Australian editions Andy Griffiths Pan Macmillan Australia on why PIR proposed changes will not be positive for the Australian book industry
