13.01.2022 Thanks for adding me to the group. I’m sharing the short story A Platypus Adventure which was written and illustrated by my partner Lee. He wrote it about 10 y...ears ago but we have turned it into an ebook in the past week. It’s had some great reviews on Amazon already from the UK and USA. It’s aimed at children around 7-11 and, owing to it being written in rhyming couplets and including some challenging words, it really does help with reading skills and expanding their vocabulary. It also touches on the themes of being proud of who you are and that the grass isn’t always greener. This extract is a favourite of mine when he tries to fit in: But then what joy...his heart took flight!! Two duck-billed friends came into sight. 'Hello' he called 'You look like me. Can I join you? Can we make three?' ‘Oh look at that' the two ducks quacked. 'A beak like ours...but like a rat' And all the farmyard animals gathered round To prod and tease and put him down. Will Mum stand by as a shooter tries and misses? Would you? No! She will run, screaming for her foal to run too. When the shooter tries again and the bullet catches her in the gut will she stop and risk her foal? No. Would you risk your daughter? No. The Mare will run and run, in pain and bleeding she will hide in the bush, out of sight of vehicles and the scopes of shooters. She will use her last strength to feed her filly foal, as her legs buckle, her foal will be nuzzling her, concerned, confused and frightened. That courageous Mother dies with the dawn light, her foal is alone, the remnants of her herd scattered. The Stallion who would have come looking for them is dead, her Aunties who would have shared their milk are scattered and terrified. That pretty little filly has been taught the herd is her safe place, her Mother her Guardian. All are gone. As night falls the cold and hungry filly lays down beside her now cold and stiff Mother.
