18.01.2022 So excited that Searching for Charlotte by best-selling author sisters Kate Forsyth and Belinda Murrell is now in our stores! (also available on our website ...www.thebwh.com) This is the perfect Christmas gift for lovers of Australian history, particularly women. Review by Heather E Zubek Have you heard of the Bosom Factor? A book has the Bosom Factor when upon finishing, you clutch it to your chest waiting for your breath to return. Searching for Charlotte: The Fascinating Story of Australia's First Children's Author by the talented authors (and sisters!) Belinda Murrell and Kate Forsyth has the Bosom Factor. Belinda and Kate have researched the story of Charlotte Waring Atkinson, Australia's first children's book author and their great-great-great-great grandmother. The sisters grew up hearing stories of bushrangers, sea faring adventures and tragedy and decided to work together to bring Charlotte's story to life. Readers follow Belinda and Kate as they go in search of Charlotte's family home in the UK. The sisters also travel across the Southern Highlands following the trail that led their ancestors to Sydney and home again on the family estate. Charlotte's story has it all - undying love, mystery, adventure, violence, grief but above all incredible triumph. But this is also a story about two of our most gifted writers who had the courage to share their own lives with us - even if it was at times painful. Searching for Charlotte is not just a story about the life of our first children's author, it is a history lesson and a love story. Read it.

17.01.2022 'Tis the season to shop local! This year has been hard on everyone, but especially indepently owned businesses. This year it is more important than ever to make sure that we support the little people and spend our money locally through these companies to make sure that they are able to stay open at the end of all of this. Big business doesn't offer you personal service, recommendations, friendly faces (who can remember customers by name!), custom orders and support of commun...ities and schools through donations and promotions. Please remember to be nice to retail workers this holiday season - if you don't agree with a price or an item, just smile and say thank you, or ask us if there's anything we can offer to help you out. It is cool to be kind and we appreciate the support from our local communities!

16.01.2022 Another big release today with the new novel from best selling author Jodi Picoult! Keep your eyes out over the next few weeks as there are some fabulous releases coming out in time for Christmas!!

16.01.2022 STAFF REVIEW The Summer That Melted Everything by Tiffany McDaniel Amy says: After the beauty that was Betty, this book had some big shoes to fill - and it definitely did not disappoint. The book is set in the same town as Betty - Breathed - and features a character named Fielding Bliss who is introduced briefly at the end of Betty. Fielding’s father Autopsy posts an ad to the Devil in the local newspaper inviting him to come to the town. Unexpectedly, the devil arrives... in Breathed in the form of a young boy who goes by the name Sal. The story follows the journey of Sal and Fielding and the events that unfold in the presence of the ‘devil’. There is a lot of prejudice within the book towards both boys, Sal for the suspicion of really being the devil, Fielding for befriending him in the first place, and the Bliss family for adopting him as one of their own. This books was so beautifully written and so descriptive. It was nothing like anything I have ever read before, but I couldn’t put it down. It was an emotional rollercoaster that had me torn between sobbing and laughing and anger and everything in between. Tiffany McDaniels books are by far the two best that I have read in 2020, and I can’t wait to see what she has up her sleeve for the next one!

15.01.2022 Who else is guilty of this?

07.01.2022 STAFF REVIEW Betty by Tiffany McDaniel Serenity says: Betty Carpenter is the sixth of eight siblings born in 1954 to a Cherokee father and white mother. In the face of poverty and discrimination, Betty finds solace in the stories of her father and strength from the land and from her Cherokee ancestors so that she can persevere through struggle. Betty is resilient, drawing from her curiosity for nature, her love for her siblings and her father’s stories to find an escape...: writing. This is her story. There is an enormous weight to this book that has left me unable to stop thinking about it. Tiffany McDaniel’s ‘Betty’ is infused with a multitude of heavy themes including racism, abuse, and cruelty. I was captivated by the fierce strength of Betty and the deep family and cultural connections. Filled with stunning writing and prose, Betty has left me breathless, but amazed.

04.01.2022 The Booker Prizewinner has been announced. Congratulations to Douglas Stuart for his incredibly moving book Shuggie Bain. Lea and Donna just loved this story... and recommend it highly. Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart 'Douglas Stuart has written a first novel of rare and lasting beauty.' Observer It is 1981. Glasgow is dying and good families must grift to survive. Agnes Bain has always expected more from life. She dreams of greater things: a house with its own front door and a life bought and paid for outright (like her perfect, but false, teeth). But Agnes is abandoned by her philandering husband, and soon she and her three children find themselves trapped in a decimated mining town. As she descends deeper into drink, the children try their best to save her, yet one by one they must abandon her to save themselves. It is her son Shuggie who holds out hope the longest. Shuggie is different. Fastidious and fussy, he shares his mother’s sense of snobbish propriety. The miners' children pick on him and adults condemn him as no’ right. But Shuggie believes that if he tries his hardest, he can be normal like the other boys and help his mother escape this hopeless place. Douglas Stuart's Shuggie Bain lays bare the ruthlessness of poverty, the limits of love, and the hollowness of pride. A counterpart to the privileged Thatcher-era London of Alan Hollinghurst’s The Line of Beauty, it also recalls the work of Édouard Louis, Frank McCourt, and Hanya Yanagihara, a blistering debut by a brilliant writer with a powerful and important story to tell. 'We were bowled over by this first novel, which creates an amazingly intimate, compassionate, gripping portrait of addiction, courage and love.' The judges of the Booker Prize
