18.01.2022 Mayor Ryan Palmer, Cr. Ken Jordan and Paul Le Mottee. Moved in the meeting tonight that "After listening to the community and the Raymond Terrace and Heatherbrae Implementation Panel resolve that: 1) Not proceed with the planning proposal for Boomerang Park. 2) Identify areas in Raymond Terrace CBD area for much needed senior living. This motion was unanimously carried. ... (note Councillors Jaimie Abbott, Glen Dunkley, Sarah Smith and Giacomo Arnott were absent). Dozens of Boomerang Park Supporters attended the meeting and gave the Councillors and the Mayor applause for their decision. The Mayor stated that the planning proposal was initiated by previously elected Councillors. After extensive investigations and community consultation, he can now give his support to allow Boomerang Park to continue as recreation for future generations. Cr. Steve Tucker stated that the process determining the future of the planning proposal has achieved a Group which cares about Boomerang Park, and this is another positive outcome for the Park. Thank you, everyone, who has contributed to the Group's campaign over the last five years to prevent housing going on the Park. Well done as we have achieved our primary goal for the Group and the community. Our ancient Boomerang Park continues to live as land dedicated for public recreation.

13.01.2022 Cr. Giacomo Arnott meet with Coral Berry to talk about Council's significant decision to not go ahead with the planning proposal for residential development on Boomerang Park. Here is what they had to say...

13.01.2022 Smoke was seen coming from Boomerang Park by a member from the Raymond Terrace Parks and Reserves Committee while she was in the shopping centre. She drove to the Cemetery end of the Park and saw flames near the walking track between the cemetery and the forest in Boomerang Park. The size of the fire at this stage was about 2-3 metres square. She called 000 immediately as no one seemed to be aware of what was happening. The fire suddenly grew and travelled into the forest wi...th flames engulfing koala food trees planted by the community. Five fire trucks from the RFS and NSW Fire and Rescue attended promptly and use thousands of litres water to put out the flames saving a culturally significant tree near the cemetery and the cemetery fence. The cause of the fire has not been assessed but it could have been deliberately lit or caused by a burning cigarette butt thrown on the ground. It is important to note that arson is a very dangerous crime that is easy to commit and difficult to detect. In New South Wales, the common law offence of arson has been abolished. Several offences in the Crimes Act 1900 deal with the destruction of property by means of fire and have penalty's ranging from 1 year to 20 years. If death results then manslaughter or murder penalty's will be added to the sentence. Please be on the lookout for any suspicious behaviour in the forest at Boomerang Park. The motives for fire setters are vandalism, excitement, revenge, crime concealment, profit and extremism. Over the past few months we have become used to the smell of smoke and perhaps we are now no longer checking if there is a fire nearby which needs to be put out. If you smell or see smoke please check for fire and call 000 if there is a fire. Port Stephens Council is assessing the safety of the forest as there is a possibility that burnt trees could drop their branches. Please avoid walking without a helmet on in the burnt area of the forest as it may not be safe. If you see injured wildlife please call WINC on 1300 946 295 or you can call Coral on 0408 358 691. Thank you for the firefighters who carefully put the fire out so quickly and thank you to the people who came to the Park to see if they could help. The Group will be seeking the help of the community to plant vegetation which has been lost by the fire. We look forward to inviting the community to come and help in the coming months. See more

05.01.2022 BPPG and Raymond Terrace Parks Reserves and Tidy Towns have been meeting on Friday afternoons to plant koala food trees along Grahamstown Drain. The aim is to strengthen the koala habitat on the eastern side of Boomerang Park to encourage koalas into Boomerang Park. Port Stephens Council has provided us with these precious trees. We will continue to plant trees each Friday afternoon weather permitting. Please call Coral on 0408 358 691 if you would like to help our koalas.

05.01.2022 Geoff Dingle in his former role as Councillor for Port Stephens Council strongly lobbied against the Planning Proposal to reclassify and rezone 4.5 hectares of Boomerang Park for residential development. He supported the community in creating the Boomerang Park Action Group to campaign against development in the Park. During Geoff’s retirement, he continued to support the Group. He was actively involved with many community groups especially in the Medowie area where he live...d. His great service to the community was acknowledged when he was granted Freeman of Port Stephens in 2018. Despite Geoff’s declining health, he showed such a strong interest in our Group by writing an article about the Group’s campaign for the Examiner on 5 December. His letter congratulated our Group’s victory after the Council voted to withdraw the planning proposal for Boomerang Park on 26 November. Members of our Group have been sad to hear that our wonderful supporter, Geoff passed away on Tuesday night. We are so grateful to have had his support from the beginning of our campaign and we will miss him. Geoff loved his family and his family loved him too and we know they will miss him greatly. We send Libby and the family our heartfelt condolences. 04.01.2022 The Environmental Minister, Sussan Ley's decision to approve clearing of koala habitat at Brandy Hill to allow the expansion of Hanson Construction Rock Quarry along with many other approvals by State Governments has led Senator Sarah Hanson-Young to say 'enough is enough' no more clearing of koala habitat! Sarah will move in Federal Parliament a moratorium to stop the clearing of koala habitat to save our endangered koalas. Please support this moratorium by inviting as many people as possible to sign the petition in support of this moratorium. The petition is very easy to complete. See details below to sign and save our Natural Treasure. Thank you.
