24.01.2022 In episode 11 of the Raising Wildlings podcast (part one of two), we talk to one of Australias favourite authors and principal, John Marsden, about his schools..., Candlebark School and Alice Miller School and how they are different to traditional schools. We talk about Candlebarks fabulous school motto: Take risks and how first-hand experiences are the essence of the schools. John tells us three things he would change about the traditional education system and what to look for when youre searching for a school for your children. John has written more than 40 books, including Tomorrow When the War Began, So Much to Tell You, and his most recent work, The Art of Growing up. He has sold over five million books worldwide, and has won every major award in Australia for young peoples fiction. Johns passionate interest in education led him to start two schools, Candlebark and Alice Miller, on forested properties in the Macedon Ranges, Victoria. The two schools enrol 390 students in 2020. 21.01.2022 Kondalilla National Park is a Nature Play Place to Go in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. A cool mountain retreat with a spectacular waterfall - Kondalilla means ...rushing water in the language of the Gubbi Gubbi people. This is a fantastic place to go on a camping or hiking trip with the family. As well as enjoying the falls themselves, keep your eyes peeled for the 107+ bird species, the 70 species of reptiles and the 32 species of frogs which have been spotted in the park. Maybe youll spot someone new to add to the list! For a beautiful picnic on the edge of the rainforest, head 50m down from the carpark to a large grassy area with picnic tables, BBQs, toilets and shelter sheds. The walking tracks also begin from here. 11.01.2022 This morning the stuff of nightmares happened, William reached up and pulled a freshly made cup of tea off the kitchen side, and it spilt all over him. I can't ...even begin to describe the guilt I am feeling at this very moment, I'm not convinced I'll ever stop crying actully. But what I REALLY felt I needed to do in light of this, was share what exactly you need to do if your child does spill hot or boiling water on them - as while the nurses at the hospital know these accidents are common in children, they absolutely DESPAIR at how little parents know when it comes to treating scalds on their children. So here goes : 1. Get them under cool running water as quickly as possible, and keep them there for atleast 20-30 minutes. Don’t use water that is ice cold it can lead to further burning and send them in to shock. 2. Call 999 3. Once saturated and cooled, you can remove the item(s) of clothing, once its been soaked through with cool water. If the child wears a nappy, make sure none has been absorbed, and remove if so. 4. After 20-30 minutes, place clingfilm over the burns (do not wrap it tightly, simply lay it over) to stop the nerve endings from hurting as this stops the oxygen getting to them. 5. Continue to keep the burn cold with wet cold towels on the cling film, but keeping the rest of their body warm with cuddles and anything you can find clothing/blanket wise! 6. Give them a dose of calpol, or any infant pain relief you have to try to help keep them as comfortable as possible, especially if it's a long trip to the hospital Ultimately, you must take all of these steps and then get them to A&E to have it accessed and properly dressed. I class myself as a savvy, sensible parent, but I didn't know that the water shouldn't be ice cold, and I didn't know it needed exposure for that long. Thankfully Ed did, and William was under a cool shower for 25 minutes before the ambulance arrived. The hospital said that these steps are the most critical part of treatment for a burn on a child, and its the part they can't be there for, but we are. So please do share this.

07.01.2022 Did you know that childrens play is developed in stages?

07.01.2022 What do you call them??! There must be so many regional names in the UK for so many of our creatures - like a kind of dialect. As communities widen over the years these words might start to disappear .

04.01.2022 This is shocking, poor kids. The need for outdoor space is absolutely essential for normal child development. Obviously the government has not read the scientific research if they have let things go totally indoors!

02.01.2022 I still cant quite believe that my humble little book Make a Date with Nature: An Introduction to Nature Journaling has just been reprinted for the fifth tim...e. Back in 2016 I was about to teach my first nature journaling workshops. I wanted to give students some take home notes for ongoing ideas and inspiration. Make a Date with Nature was the result. From the very start it was a free ebook - one you can download from my website. So I didnt expect to sell many print copies. But people keep buying them, so I keep printing them. Many folks have found this little book speaks to them, for which I am grateful. Thank you to Minute Man Press Prahran for once again doing a great print job. Unlike most books, Make a Date with Nature is printed in Australia on recycled paper. Download the free ebook or purchase a print copy here: https://www.paperbarkwriter.com//make-a-date-with-nature-/ Happy nature journaling! #naturejournal #naturejournaling #book #ebook #freebook #freeebookdownload #freeebook

01.01.2022 Risk and Adventure! For children, doing ANYTHING new can feel like a huge risk. So, without a sense of adventure, play and learning can stop the moment a risk i...s apparent. . Risk management tends to put the focus on what children cant do, rather than what they could possibly do. Its not a healthy way to approach your own learning, is it? . Adventure, on the other hand, involves the presence of a wonder and curiosity that we want to satisfy by venturing into the unknown. Adventure is a risk in itself, and we try the risk because we want to. Adventure assumes we are capable of learning. . When we are learning adventurously, we may not know which skills we will need to use, what reserves of resilience we will need to stretch or what decisions we will need to discuss together for our safety. We dont know until we try it. Its a risk. But its so fun! Risk management is about surviving. Adventure management is about thriving, where safety is not negotiable but the difference in attitude helps us grow in incredible ways, from learning to dress ourselves to climbing mountains. . Are you ready for an adventure? We are. #birdwingsforestschool #adventuretherapy #adventurousplay
