23.01.2022 Rodeo Royalty - Jack ‘Happy’ Gill Junior It is always great to acknowledge the hard workers in the horse industry. Although, having said that, many competitors ...go on to put back into their sport. Jack Gill was going to rodeos all his life, as his family travelled with wild west shows, living on the road in horse-drawn wagons. As a child he attended up to five schools a week as they moved around! His grandchildren are now the sixth generation to travel with rodeos. Jack joined the Australian Rough Riders Association [ARRA] in 1946 and had an illustrious career as a competitor (bronc, bareback and bull riding) , rodeo producer and stock contractor. In 1980, he was one of the first two people to be awarded life membership of the ARRA in appreciation of his dedicated service to professional rodeo. (The other was Darby McMartin). He served on the Board of Directors, including as vice President. His father Jack snr was awarded the same honour in 1965, and many say they are considered the ‘first family of rodeo’. His farm in the Riverina region of southern NSW stocked a few hundred horses, bulls and cows, all bred specifically for their bareback and bronc bucking ability, and which were used to provide livestock for about 35 rodeos and bull rides his family was said to be the first fulltime stock contractors in rodeo in Australia. Most stock work only a few minutes a year, if they are good at their job, he maintained. He told a Weekly Times journalist, We don’t start our bulls until they’re about four. On a normal farm you eat two-year-old steers or veal. Rodeo bulls are the only cattle that don’t get castrated. People ask how we make them wild. But the last thing we want is a wild or mad bull. We want a smart bull who knows what it’s doing on the day. Jack’s great grandparents started out pre-1900, before arenas, when racetrack meetings would have side shows of wild west, rodeo-style entertainment. It was Jack’s grandparents, Violet and Stanley Gill, who started Gill Brothers rodeo and his earliest memories are of travelling with his grandparents to towns around Australia, as far north as Cairns in Queensland and as far south as Spalding in South Australia. In the 1960s he took his wife and family, horses and bulls to Singapore, Hong Kong and the Philippines on a travelling show, performing in big stadiums. He’s proud of his father’s contribution as well. Jack snr was the first to introduce Brahman cattle into rodeos in Australia, in 1948. He also introduced the singing of the national anthem, and the ‘grand entry’, at Warrnambool in 1964. Jack says before modern stock-contractors were even thought of, his father was the first one to have portable chutes. He was also the first to have a crowd barrier (at Croydon, Vic). Gill brothers’ Wild West Show has another claim to fame they gave starts to country music stars like Smoky Dawson, Smilin’ Billy Blinkhorn, Buddy Williams and Tex Morton., who had no social media or even television to help their careers.
