25.01.2022 Some serious climbing.

25.01.2022 Last Saturday was the day to fly at Boonah. Not high, not many people but nicely developed Cu and the sky pretty much to yourself. Where were you. This weekend looks better.

25.01.2022 Not Boonah but the sentiment is right.

24.01.2022 Peter didnt have too run to far with 20 knots down the strip last Sunday. High winds forecast for Saturday. Sunday should be a little less but still getting close to maximums. A good chance of wave conditions.

24.01.2022 Very nice to see this in the Fassifern Guardian. There is nothing we enjoy more than introducing someone to the magic of motorless flight. https://www.fassifernguardian.com//an-in-flight-tick-of-ap

23.01.2022 An awesome weekend. Great flying both days, good company, good crew, good distances good duration, eagles and high cloudbase. What more could you want? Eagle shots courtesy of Z man.

23.01.2022 Mike had a big weekend. What great conditions we have had. Lots of flying around the club as well.

23.01.2022 What a terrible winters day. Only nine flights, 8 solos, up to 8 knots, 6200 feet. Hours of flying. Hard to believe it is winter. Where were you? Thanks to Brian, Barry, and Rod for a great day. Nice to see Cooper turning back from the dark side to white planes flying.

22.01.2022 An amazing day gliding at Boonah this Wednesday, 4-9kt thermals to 7000. Love winter in Southern Queensland.

21.01.2022 Gary Clark has been known to visit Boonah Gliding Club on occasion. We hope he doesnt draw too much inspiration from our members. What an amazing career he has had.

21.01.2022 We had another great gliding day today. All three two seaters being utilised as well as Jeremy taking his Libelle for a spin. Thank you to Denis and Ian for instructing, everyone had a fun time. We also had a visit from Scott Buchholz MP, our local federal member, who was interested to see how we have used the federal governments volunteers grant that he was instrumental in helping the club with.

20.01.2022 Now that's a cloud

20.01.2022 The forecast was for wind, and wind means wave. There was certainly a lot of wind, and there were wave features but it was a bit more difficult to connect with this week. The bands were narrow but with a bit of persistence you could lose the tow height fairly quickly. If you insisted on persevering there was ridge lift and the odd thermal as well. As you would expect in the wind many of the thermals had significant drift but every now and then you could find 4 to 6 knot climbs to 5000. A good turnout, with all three two-seaters out as well as three singles. Tim and Doug in the Twin joined me in a fun climb. Thanks to Ian, Tim, Peter, Doug and Rod for a great day.

20.01.2022 High cirrus on Saturday tended to kill the lift but it was still soarable. Brian managed to get 7000 in Kermit working the face of the cloud, but cloud base was only 6000 feet or so for the rest of us. Some good climbs around above 3000 at up to 4 knots but down low it was hard work. Thanks to Barry, Brian, Ian, Greg and MicMac for making the day possible.

19.01.2022 Another fine day for flying at Boonah. With four students and one AEF we were pretty busy. We didn't do all that many flights eight in total but what flights they were. Good strong thermals up to 6500'. Cloud base was probably 7000' but the climbs were so good that we didn't bother getting all the way up. Student's got a chance to experience summer like thermals with spring like temperatures. Visitor Des enjoyed his first flight and got to experience flying with eagles as well as the simple joys of flight. The end of the day reminded us of just how dry it has been we had visits from the aerial firefighters refueling after a day fighting spot fires. Thanks, Dave and Joe for a great day.

19.01.2022 The morning looked over developed, but the forecast was for good soaring. By 10:00 some of the cloud had burned off and the sky was full of Cu that our three AE...F passengers and three students enjoyed to the full. Six to eight knots isnt bad at all for a spring day. Off tow we climbed to 4500 feet for a great view of the scenic rim. Later it got even better with Mike Sabin getting a leisurely 400km flight out of the day. Kermit was out again, taking full advantage of the conditions and Z man had a ball. Thanks to Wes, Cooper and Peter for a great day Sunday. See more

18.01.2022 Whilst we couldn't launch today due to the crosswind, a lot was still done in the hangars. Roger, Dale and Dennis finished the Form 2 on IKE and will be flying this weekend. Paul and I polished the wings on BGE. Check out the sky this morning, wave clouds over Boonah Airfield with a strong south easterly blowing. Unfortunately the wind was outside crosswind limits. Can't wait for Saturday.

18.01.2022 We had another great day gliding at Boonah on Wednesday. Our morning briefing included a lesson on thermals and methods to get the most out of them. It must have helped as everyone had soaring flight in the challenging conditions.

15.01.2022 Vale Hans-Werner Grosse a pioneer of gliding.

15.01.2022 About as far as you can get from the serenity and grace of gliding Elon Musks SpaceX launched a grain silo 500 feet into the air moved it sideways in a controlled manner and landed it on retracting legs. Cant wait to see it work with the rest of the rocket.

15.01.2022 Another beautiful day at Boonah in the Scenic Rim. A little snapshot of Saturday. A small crew and one student, that didnt stop us from enjoying the conditions. Scott had three flights including some emergency drills, and Torsten had a little boot around the area. Thanks to Mike, Rod and Torsten for a most pleasant morning.

15.01.2022 Penny is certainly made of the right stuff. Penny Wright recently enjoyed an air experience flight with fellow Boonah resident and gliding instructor Tim Burgess. Penny, who lives near the airfield, often watches the gliders fly over her house and has always wanted to give it a go. Tim promised to take Penny up for her birthday earlier this year, however covid19 put paid to that idea. Now with the relaxing of covid19 conditions, Penny was able to enjoy a wonderful flight with Tim around the beautiful Scenic Rim. Penny really enjoyed her experience and commented that she is looking forward to flying with Tim again.

14.01.2022 Wave is predicted this Saturday and Sunday at Boonah.

14.01.2022 Saturday was apparently a good day for our solitary student of the day. One student two instructors and his own personal tug pilot. Scott had three 40 minute instructional flights. Not bad after a 3 month hiatus. Barry took the shots below apparently they climbed to about 4500 feet flew to Moogerah and back without losing any significant height and had to use spoilers and slips to get down. So where are all the glider pilots? Thanks to Brian, Barry and Joe for getting Scott and Mike into the air.

13.01.2022 Enjoy this great video clip from Adam and Keith flying in the amazing gliding conditions at Narromine yesterday

13.01.2022 For all of you out in the universe... stop what you are doing, and come fly with us! Glider formation flying! www.aecaosta.it

12.01.2022 Wonderful wave The sky has been full of wave features over the last week. Typical Ekka winds made for beautiful wave conditions last weekend. Sunday saw some of the best winter wave we have seen with club members and AEF flights getting to experience smooth wave climbs. No pictures we were too busy having fun. With 13 flights including 5 passenger flights it was a great day. Thanks to all for a great day. Weather looks good for Sunday this weekend.

12.01.2022 Another spectacular winters day. Four to six knots climbs to 6000. Its been a long time since we saw 5 singles and two trainers in the air at the same time. With 14 flights including 4 air experience flights we took full advantage of the conditions. Thanks to Stewart, John, Tim, Ken, Peter and Mic Mac for getting us all up into the air. If you havent flown for a while, why not fly with us?

12.01.2022 Looking forward to seeing Dennis cruising around the Scenic Rim in his newly acquired Mosquito.

11.01.2022 Dear all, I would like to share with you that today, Nixus, piloted by Jim Payne and Alan Coombs, had the performance to claim 3 US national soaring records for... open class multiplace gliders. 1. Distance in triangle flight 2. Speed in 1000km triangle 3. Distance in free triangle In the last month or so, I am working virtually from Minden, NV, where Jim Payne lives, and a perfect place for soaring. I am staying there 5-7 days and here in SLO 3-4 days. This time required a lot of adaptations because of the pandemic. Straight drives from SLO to Minden, live alone on a guest house, and teach from Jims porch. But it paid off. This week we also managed to collect wing vibration data using the FBW system to excite the wing in flight, this will allow us to actually finish to expand Nixus flight envelope, which still limited to 240km/h EAS VNE. Unfortunately no students with me during this time, but they (Akaflieg-SLO) are following the progress closely. I am sure I will have opportunities to involve the students again in the future, and I am really glad that I had them deeply involved on the last steps before the pandemic. We still have a lot to do on this sailplane and their help will be crucial. I am sure that all these record thing is just one other vanity of vanities, but this project has being a long road for me, with big ups and downs, and I am really happy and relieved to get here with it. Thank you all that helped this project. Long road, with ups and downs, but the future seems very promising for this glider. https://www.onlinecontest.org/olc-/gliding/flightinfo.html

11.01.2022 It was great to see the mass exodus from Boonah Airfield by the Bill and the Airsports mob. Perfect two ship departure by Bill and Dave, looking good everyone.

10.01.2022 A great midweek gliding day at Boonah today. 14 flights for around 10 hours total flying time. Congratulations to Matt on going solo again after an 18 year break from gliding.

09.01.2022 A great final weekend for the year. After a week or two of rain the landscape has completely changed. It looks spectacular from the air. A quiet day at the club a few passenger flights with really delightful people, who sampled their first soaring flights, to 4000 feet at up to 5 knots. A few club pilots had good soaring flights to 6500' with above 5 knot climbs. Its great to see so many locals coming to the airfield and enjoying this wonderful sport. Thanks to Tim, Peter, Chris, and John for making the day happen.

08.01.2022 Getting current in the Stemme S12 again, ready for lessons with Peter next week. A quick flight around our beautiful scenic rim with a close look at Mt Barney then back to Boonah for circuits this morning. Loving the 53:1 glide ratio.

08.01.2022 A mixed bag. Saturday was wet so no flying but our K21 came back to be rigged Sunday. Its nice to have three two seaters available along with the two singles. Sunday was forecast to be difficult to thermal and that was certainly true. Although the instructors showed us how it was done, with climbs to 7000 and some good 2 knot climbs. It was a bit of a pity that the sink was 10 knots but that just made working the lift more of a challenge. Our three students and three AEF passengers certainly got their experience. Our only regret was the wave features were still forming as the sun set. What a day. Where were you? Thanks to Z man for the pics from 6500 feet going up flat and level. Bonus points for spotting the eagle.

08.01.2022 COVID19 is a serious business - but its good to keep smiling through these difficult times. Hopefully not too long now before we can move forward with two seat... flying. Once there is clarity about the way forward with people from different households flying together where social distancing isnt possible, guidance will be updated here https://members.gliding.co.uk/covid19-restrictions-support/ See more

08.01.2022 Glassy smooth conditions in the blue hole above the club but still nice to fly. No better time to fly.

08.01.2022 An oldie but a goody. Nine Blaniks on tow.

08.01.2022 Soar to the Stratosphere: extended footage of Airbus Perlan Mission II Flights

07.01.2022 Also a common sight over Boonah.

07.01.2022 Showers around the field meant only one flight today, but it was the evaluation flight to welcome IKD to the fleet. IKD came to us from Central Queensland Gliding Club and she is a beauty (the photo is from their site). She is very comfortable to fly a great addition to the fleet. That gives us three two seat trainers and three singles available plenty of capacity and few students so come out and join us no better time to fly and view the beauty of the Scenic Rim around Boonah.

06.01.2022 Some clubs use a winch, but on Sundays Phil likes to launch towed by a Ford F100. A very long rope runs the length of the runway through 2 pulleys to obtain a two to one advantage. The truck runs up the strip and the glider goes up. Fifty-three seconds from ground roll to 1200' AGL. Pavel had the opportunity to experience this unique launch method followed by some ridge running last weekend. Nice video Pavel.

06.01.2022 A few more shots from Saturday.

06.01.2022 Thank you to the water bombers and rural fire brigade operating from Boonah Airfield keeping our community safe. It was amazing to see your operations in and out of the airfield this weekend Thank you also to Bill Finlen (Tiger Moth) and Nigel Arnot (Airsport) for generously allowing the Bomber operations to use your private land adjacent to the airfield yet again. It might be time for the Qld state government and Scenic Rim Regional Council to work together to provide a more permanent operating facility for QFES on the airfield.

05.01.2022 Some eye candy.

05.01.2022 A huge thank you to Scott Bucholtz MP for the letter of appreciation and the help enabling our successful bid for the Commonwealth Governments volunteers grant.

04.01.2022 The forecast was for difficult turning to mediocre and then to rain. Its annoying when the forecast is correct. The thing is its still a joy to glide even when the conditions are difficult. A "sucker thermal" got me on the first launch a quick release into a quarter turn of lift and three quarters of down followed by 17 minutes of hard work which got me back to the ground. On relight it was better, the next hour was between 3,000' and 4,000' with some 2 and 3 knot climbs. Then the rains came. We had plenty of time to get the gliders under cover and enjoyed the company on the ground whilst the rains past. All in all a great day. Thanks to Brian, Chris, Peter, John and Dale for making the day work.

04.01.2022 Local members discount. If you are a local solo pilot who is endorsed to fly either WUN or IKE have we got a deal for you. The singles are not getting enough use so for the next year we will be running a special offer. The first hour will be charged at the normal rate but after that the rate will be 50% off for single hire with a maximum charge for 3 hours of flight. Now its up to you. Currently WUN is ready to fly, IKE is having a little work done but it will be back in the air shortly.

04.01.2022 The forecast looked pretty good. There was some stipple and high winds at the boundary layer but a forecast of 9,000' and 5 kts made it look interesting. It was surprising that we only had one student and no AEF's booked but that just meant a few of us could take time to explore the area solo. Three or four local members flew west over the range to have a look at the area around Warwick reporting plus 9,000'. However, for me the highlight of the day was spotting a wedgie shor...tly off tow. I thought I would have a closer look and get a lesson from the professional. Often they leave fairly quickly but this one was happy to thermal with me and maintained station so that I could watch hom outclimb me for a while. When he finally left he came in over the wing and had a good close look in the cockpit. What majestic creatures they are. Thanks to Wes, Cooper, Jeremy, Dale and John for getting everyone up into the air and a great day. Did I mention this was the worse day of the weekend? See more

04.01.2022 We miss our K-13. One of the benefits of wood, rag and tube you can paint them.

03.01.2022 Looks like it will be an awesome day for gliding around South East Queensland. Thermals everywhere and some really exciting convergence lines predicted between Boonah and Warwick.

03.01.2022 Clouds are amazing.

02.01.2022 Gliding is cancelled today due to the forecast cross wind at Boonah. I will be at the airfield available for theory lessons though. Tim

02.01.2022 The winter westerlies have been producing wave, with some spectacular lenticular clouds marking the lift at Boonah.

02.01.2022 With low COVID infection rates in the South-East people are wanting to get out and try something different. That was certainly the case on Saturday with seven air experience flights and a friend and family flight along with a few students it was a busy day. Visitor Sarah wanted to have the best flight of the day and with climbs to 5000' at 6-8 knots she may just have got that. Young Ben was super keen even with impaired vision he wanted to experience glider flight, and he lov...ed it. As always, its fun for us when our visitors are that keen. The usual suspects were out for their own private flying Mike had some excitement going cross-country to Casino in what were at times trying conditions. Greg had a good flight as well. As per usual thanks to our instructor Barry, Jeremy and Steve for getting everyone into the air and Dale and Greg for the ground crew work. At the end of the day 16 flights not bad for a lazy Saturday. Where were you? See more

02.01.2022 As he says in the video, this is flying!

02.01.2022 A little snapshot of Saturday.

01.01.2022 Enjoying a mutual flight with the seabreeze pushing in together with Gareth at Boonah Gliding Club. Wednesday flying at Boonah.

01.01.2022 We had an amazing day here at Boonah yesterday. A successful club day with 17 flights and climbs to 8500 feet. Welcome to our two new members Will and Ricardo, we hope you had a fun day. It is also great to see the Scenic Rim greening up after the recent rain.

01.01.2022 For a blustery Westerly and flying off our cross strip, it wasnt a bad day. With only one aircraft and one instructor we managed to give our few students a cou...ple of flights each. Some need circuit practice and some need soaring techniques practiced. Its always a buzz to share a thermal with the local wildlife too.

01.01.2022 The last weekend of the year was brilliant. Nice cu to 6500' with above 5 knot climbs.
