17.01.2022 Yass Area Network of Landcare Groups would like to invite you to a Paddock walk with Alison Elvin This Saturday, 19 September 2-4pm Kangiara (~30 kms from Yass on Lachlan Valley Way) Alison Elvin led a very successful in-house plant id session earlier this year - and now she is moving outdoors to convey tips on plant identification in the paddock. We will meet at the Kangiara Road pull off area which is approximately 30kms from Yass on the Lachlan Valley way, on the right han...d side when travelling from Yass to Boorowa. We are asking people to arrive by 1:45pm as we will then go as a small convey into the property on the other side of the road. The ground is still quite wet so we will be walking - so please wear long trousers and enclosed shoes, plus please bring a hat and your water bottle. If you have any Box Gum Woodland books that you would like to bring please do so as we hope to identify a range of acacias and Eucalyptus. The property is 97 hectares so we can walk for as little or as far as participants are interested. Please RSVP to Kath McGuirk, 0428 822 854. Please make sure to provide your phone number in case we need to cancel due to wet weather. If a Landcare member wishes to offer their property for a paddock walk in the months of October, November and early December please let Kath McGuirk know. See more

15.01.2022 The Landcare Australia Michael King grant is allowing Yass Landcare Community nursery and Bango Bowning-Bookham nursery to sow and grow native seedlings for our... bushfire affected partner at Mill Farm Bemboka. Seedlings currently powering on in the recent heat include Acacia melanoxylon, Angophora floribunda (Rough Barked Apple), Lomandra longifolia, Acacia faliciformi, Acacia implexa, Allocasuarina littoralis, Brachychiton populneu, Acacia elongate, Banksia marginata, Hakae microcarpa plus others. Plant maintenance is vital for all seedlings - especially over what we expect to be a hot summer - so if you can attend the next Yass Nursery working bee on Tuesday 24 November from 9.30 to noon behind the Yass Men's Shed 1428 Yass Valley Way you are welcome to see what your regional Landcare nursery volunteer team is doing.

15.01.2022 Crime Stoppers Blitz Against Environmental Crime. A new state-wide environmental crime campaign by Crime Stoppers is being launched to address the ongoing issue of crimes having a devastating effect on our waterways. For the first time Crime Stoppers has collaborated with both Local Land Services (LLS) and the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) on a dedicated campaign to address the illegal trading of certain plants which are catastrophic to our waterways. Plants li...ke water hyacinth, frogbit and salvinia are illegal to trade and devastating to our environment. These plants grow at a rapid rate, block waterways, reduce water quality and can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to control. They restrict livestock, birds and other native animals’ access to water, reduce food and shelter for fish and native animals and prevent native water plants from growing. But it doesn’t stop there. These water plants also put the economy and our community at risk. Boating, fishing and swimming will be a thing of the past if we don’t stop the growing and trading of plants which cause havoc in our waterways, said CEO NSW Crime Stoppers, Mr Peter Price AM. With spring fast approaching, the rapidly expanding online marketplace has become an emerging pathway for the prohibited trade of plants, and a biosecurity challenge. It is an offence just to have frogbit plants because of the devastating impact that species can have. So, we are appealing to the public for help. Community awareness and action will be crucial in stopping the prohibited trading of these plants. We are asking anyone who sees these plants being sold online to report it to NSW Crime Stoppers. added Mr Price. To make a real difference and protect our waterways, we need a whole of community approach. People are spending time online and this is where most illegal trading of these plants occurs’, said Mr Price. Local government authorities and the Nursery & Garden Industry NSW & ACT are also supporting the campaign. Penalties of up to $1.1 million or 3 years imprisonment are in place for individuals found to be selling these plants. If you see, know or suspect criminal activity, contact Crime Stoppers in complete confidence on 1800 333 000 or report online at https://nsw.crimestoppers.com. We don’t want to know who you are, we just want to know what you know. For more information about the three targeted weed species visit https://weeds.dpi.nsw.gov.au See more
