11.01.2022 I have not used Virus or Malware protection software on any of my personal computers in almost 20 years, and in that time I’ve only encountered one incident which was serious so here are my top 3 tips to prevent virus or malware infection without buying anti-virus software. My most important tip is 1) Don’t be tricked into downloading software onto your computer. The trick comes from 3 sources: phone calls, websites and email.... * People will phone you claiming to be from Microsoft, Telstra or other such reputable company - just hang up. Microsoft don’t care that much about you. * Websites will try to trick you by displaying messages that your computer is infected with spyware, viruses or malware. The only thing these websites want you to do, is turn off your brain and follow every instruction they give you, just close them. * Emails containing attachments or links you don’t understand or were not expecting to receive. Suspicious emails often ask you to click on a link, confirm your account or open an attachment. Don’t trust any email that wants you to do something or take action. 2) Keep your computer software up-to-date with Windows Updates. 3) Never click Agree or Ok to close a window that is suspicious, click the red X in the corner of the window.
03.01.2022 An easy way to check your Internet connections download speed, is to visit www.fast.com. I’ve recently signed up to the NBN and have a reliable 50Mbps speed, however just because I can download this fast, this does not mean all websites can deliver content this fast. For example, I’m trying to download a 55MB file which I should be able to do in 9 seconds, however this file is located on a slow connection and this is currently taking 10 mins to download. No big deal - some websites are fast, but keep in mind many are still slow and/or limited.
02.01.2022 Power is out in Boorowa this morning and crews are investigating. You can check the official status at the page below. The mobile phone towers have battery backup reserves - usually good for a few hours. https://www.essentialenergy.com.au/outages-an/power-outages
