22.01.2022 Wondering if anyone may have a photo of the Coffee Palace / Boarding house which was in Boort c 1920s. Comments Peter Baldwin I don’t have any photos of the old coffee palace, but here is an extract from my memoir of growing up in Boort, which describes the Coffee palace. The Nelson boys used to unhitch their pony in a block, owned by their Aunty (Mrs McNeil), in Wright Street, opposite Dad’s Garage. They would leave the Jinker in the shade under a huge peppercorn tree, with ...the pony free to roam around on the block. They would then walk up to school, on many occasions with us. At the top end of the block facing the Boort Quambatook Road (Victoria Street), were the partial remains of a mud brick building which in years gone by had been the Victoria Coffee Palace. Mrs McNeil, an elderly lady and a short stocky man with a large head, two chins and a hunch back, named Tony Balsarini, were still living in the old Coffee Palace building. They were rarely ever sighted. When Ross & myself were very young we would become quite frightened if we ever saw Tony and we would run home. I don’t remember what we imagined he would do to us, but of course he was quite harmless. He could often be heard singing the song Two Little Boys In Blue. Coffee Palaces: ‘They were temperance hotels that did not serve alcohol, built during the 1880s in Australia. They were built in response to the temperance movement and, in particular, the influence of the Independent Order of Rechabites in Australia. The 1880s boom soon bust, and the Coffee Palaces lost custom to licensed hotels that they were sometimes built to compete with. However, the term Coffee Palace continued to be popular and many fairly small residential hotels, often in resort or country Towns, used the name to indicate they were not licensed, but they fell short of the grandeur the name implied’. Neil (Hank) and Norman (our Brother) were in the same Form at School and they were great mates. After Form 4 at Boort, Neil went on to Kerang High School and Norman went on to Bendigo High School to complete their Secondary education.. After Secondary school, they both pursued careers in Education. Neil had a distinguished career in Education and In the 2008 Queen’s Birthday Honours he was awarded an AM for outstanding service as a teacher and commentator on PNG. See more
