21.01.2022 Your soil & soil health is considered to be one of your main assets on your farm or grazing business. The first in a series of seven videos focused on soil health & soil testing is available via this link. The rest are rolling out at Soil Land Food, do check them out! We use a soil health assessment that is based on the fantastic RASH approach.

20.01.2022 Put me out of a job and take soil measurements yourself! This is not prescriptive and I’d do it a little differently (probably say that getting bulk density from these corners isn’t all that accurate but an estimation) but you get the idea! Take your baselines!

20.01.2022 You can take the girl out of the field during #Covid19, but you can’t take the field out of the girl. Missing these days in the field and looking forward to digging some holes this spring! #lovemyoffice

14.01.2022 Tying interest rates for farm loans to improvements in soil’s carbon and water storage as a way to save farmers from the disastrous impacts of climate change.

13.01.2022 Founded on more than 50 years’ worth of data from a unique field experiment, researchers have demonstrated that common farming practices drain the soil of carbon, altering the structure of soils’ microscopic habitat and, remarkably, the genetics of microbes living within it.

11.01.2022 Breaking news Soil method projects up to $5000 advance to help with costs An advance payment of up to $5000 will be offered to eligible Emissions Reduction Fund (ERF) proponents to assist with the upfront costs of soil sampling through an advance payment offer that will be linked to a Carbon Abatement Contract.... This pilot initiative is set to be launched in conjunction with the 11th ERF auction in September and follows a recent consultation process. We wish to thank those who provided responses to the consultation. The advance payment will be offered to support baseline soil sampling costs that can present a barrier to ERF participation.

09.01.2022 Bruce Pascoe delivered a lecture on Indigenous farming and land management. The 'Dark Emu' author is also joined in a conversation with agricultural scientist Dr Angela Pattison. It has never been more important to be sharing Indigenous knowledge. So many solutions to the problems we face today can be found in that wisdom. It is impossible to overestimate the powerful contribution of Bruce Pascoe's work, in particular the seminal Dark Emu, which has inspired a number of proj...ects here at the University, including the Indigenous Grasslands for Grain project. The detail and grace in Pascoe's research and writing has unlocked important conversations and reawakened knowledge. In this public lecture, Uncle Pascoe shared insights into sustainable farming and practices, with a keynote address on the idea of 'Perennial Soil'. Pascoe is also joined by Dr Angela Pattison, plant breeder and agricultural scientist from the University of Sydney. Pattinson is the research lead for the Indigenous Grasslands for Grain, a cross-disciplinary project that aims to regenerate the Australian native system for the modern food environment. It is a concept that brings together cultural and scientific knowledge, regional and urban centres, and sustainability with economic viability. Professor Lisa Jackson Pulver AM, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous Strategy and Services) chaired the event.

02.01.2022 WORLD FIRST From Australia in SOIL CARBON FARMING! Earlier this year marked the historic issuance of the first Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) to a soil carbon farming project that goes toward Australia's emissions targets under the Paris Agreement. This is huge! It means that carbon farmers in Australia are being paid RIGHT NOW to store carbon in their soils through regenerative farming practices.... Soil organic carbon is in effect a scorecard for farming practices. Building soil carbon using innovative practices has direct effects on production and yield when this leads to healthy soils. Healthy soils mean healthy livestock, crops and horticulture. This is a positive for the farm, the farmer, consumers and the environment. The broader benefit of a price on carbon adds to the co-benefits of increasing soil health. This date and all the projects that are currently on the ground, mark an important milestone in the transition of agriculture from a source of greenhouse gas emissions to significant carbon sink. More projects are coming online around Australia and more farmers are now adding carbon farming to their enterprise and have already been sampled by Bootstrap Environmental Services. Farmers are encouraged to ask questions and to find out more about carbon farming and how they can be involved. Diversifying farm income is smart business and so is building soil carbon.
