25.01.2022 We will be closed today due to medical stuff. We will be open tomorrow starting a new phase in the company with a new member joining the team. Stay tuned.

25.01.2022 All ready for some love in a machine kind of way.

23.01.2022 So thats a wrap for the latest list. How did we go? Did we miss any that you thought should have been included? What was your favourite? There will be a couple of weeks break while I compile the next list. The next list will be centered around micro engines. If you have any suggestions for lists, let me know.

23.01.2022 I couldn’t resist this.

23.01.2022 Does you car run at an elevated temperature? Does have trouble breathing and runs out of breath under load? Coughs and splutters? It may have Corona Virus.

21.01.2022 Famous Home-built Engines KZ2300 V12 Those who have known me personally for a long time, know that Im into motorcycles, and whats more is that Im a fan of the Kawazaki Z motorcycles - my ride being a 30 year old ZR1100 Zephyr. So little surprise to them would be my choice of the best home build engine. It raps up a rather difficult list of very impressive machines, but here goes: We return again to a previous entrant, Allen Millyard.... His custom V12 started as assorted KZ1300 parts. The issues he faced with this build started with the heads. One needed to be reversed, which caused issues because the camshaft drive was offset and so were the head studs. This meant that he had to remake the oil galleries as well as the water passages. The cam-chain tensioner, cam runs and cam chain all needed to be custom made. His biggest issue he found was when building the bottom end. There wasnt room for two rods on each crankshaft pin, so he eventually settled on the same system radial engines use - a master/slave configuration with each rod milled from a single piece of five-inch-diameter round bars (of chrome-moly steel), with a 20mm thick plate machined out of the center. The engine is fuel injected, phosphor-bronze bushings are used throughout engine and an improved oiling system has been added as well. A quick google search will show you how beautiful this 250hp bike looks. It could easily be mistaken for a factory design by the finish quality alone. Other modifications to the bike were an enlarged K1300 Voyager frame, a stretched fuel tank, new six-piston front brakes and modernized suspension. If the images and videos of this machine, and the other entrants on this list, for that matter, dont want to make you go out and build yourself an engine MacGyver style then you either drive a Prius, or you aint breathing! 21.01.2022 Theres no replacement for displacement. What a sweet way to go deaf...

20.01.2022 Saw (and heard) a very nice Benz today while filling up the car - with a very surprising engine. Thanks to Steve for the chat.

20.01.2022 Interesting engine swap in this 280 Mercedes Benz. Thanks Steve.

20.01.2022 The Rottler allows easy alignment of off-vertical valve guides as shown here on this alloy cross-flow Ford head. The angle is attained via two locking handles and a screw handle with any inaccuracies taken up by a pivot in the cutting tool holder.

20.01.2022 A set of Dietz heads ready for final wash and assembly.

19.01.2022 This is the head off a Toyota 1HD-T that was involved in a car fire. The silver stuff is a portion of the alloy inlet manifold that melted and worked its way in past the open valves into the cylinder.

18.01.2022 Interesting to watch. I remember being mesmerized by such processes when I toured the Geelong Ford Engine Plant as an apprentice.

18.01.2022 More changes taking place this year...

18.01.2022 A fully reconditioned 2H engine ready for its return to Brisbane. If youre looking for 2H stuff, give Alan a bell at Cruiser Utes.

18.01.2022 Off to a happy customer today. It heads to Brisbane tonight via Manns Transport. The 2H engine block has been bored out to .020 oversize, surfaced and sports new cam bearings, welsh plugs and a coat of blue.

15.01.2022 Custom made Mack valve sitting pretty...

14.01.2022 Rings and bearings done on this 1AZ Toyota. Just need to reassemble and do the head up and it will be ready for delivery.

14.01.2022 Reringing just got easier. I used to do this by hand.

12.01.2022 Famous Home-built Engines Suttons Twin Row Fourteen Cylinder Radial Early on in the list, we saw a nine cylinder radial built by Russel Sutton using the cylinders from a Honda XR600. At the end of that post, I said wed see his work again, and well, here we are again. In this post we see his latest creation - a twin row, fourteen cylinder engine built using the XV1700 top ends. A quick internet search shows up some pretty impressive pictures; nicely chromed covers topping of...f each cylinder. He utilised many parts already on the market - pistons and barrels from a (actually many) Yamaha XV1700; oil pump, throttle body and lifters from a Barra Falcon engine; and a turbocharger (did I mention it was turbocharged as well?)from a Cummins bus engine. He sourced out the master rod and assembly as well as the cam plate, but he designed and built the crankcase himself. Some stats on the engine: Bore and stroke - 97 X 113 mm Displacement is 11.7 litres. Induction - turbocharged and intercooled running 12lbs on a standard 8.3:1 compression Ignition - EFI utilising Barra ignition coils Power output. 600Hp /1170ft/lbs torque @2700 RPM (Prop limited) This engine looks like it would belong on a World War Two fighter but then they werent able to successfully use a turbo on those engines because of the room needed (with a couple of exceptions for really BIG single seaters), but it looks like Russel nailed that one too. This engine is a must for a google search for pictures - they say more than words could. See more

12.01.2022 Fixing Fendts. These Fendt heads - three of six - needed inlet valve seats and inlet valves due to the engine being "addicted" to Aerostart. On a technical level, when ordering inserts, be sure to remember, if you are putting non OEM inserts into an existing bore - as a nominal rule - Imperial sized inserts have their interference already allowed for in the insert diameter while Metric inserts need to have the interference calculated. For example, with a 43.5mm diameter insert bore, a Metric insert will fall into the bore (really, really bad) while an Imperial insert with the same size will go in with the required .003" to .004" interference (very good).

11.01.2022 Not just cylinder heads, as this 2H block could attest to...

10.01.2022 Two engines, Red and Blue.

10.01.2022 OK, so we are now at week fourteen of my list of Famous Home-built Engines. The following is a recap of the engines so far in reverse order of display: Suttons Twin Row Fourteen Cylinder Radial Twin 1JZ V12 AD V12... Mike Harrahs V24-71 Detroit Diesel Big Mike Big Ned Aardema DOHC 3-valve L4 Max Lambky and his Quarter Hemi. NSU 2000cc Single Cylinder Motorcycle Merlin 4500cc Rolls-Royce motorcycle V12 LS1 Sweet 16 / HERCULES 1934 The Musket V twin Flying Millyard. Suttons Radial All of these engines are magnificent in both design and built, and with only one engine left, the last one must be something really special! Any ideas on what it is?

10.01.2022 Almost ready to start putting bits back together.

09.01.2022 A nice little Holden pot plant holder...

09.01.2022 To most viewing this the vague line in the first picture going from the hexagonal plug across to the left of the picture could easily be mistaken for a fold in the casting or just a mark on the metal surface itself. To most engine reconditioners, and others familiar with the Ford Alloy XFlow heads, it is instantly recognisable as a crack. In the second picture, now that the plug has been removed, it is easier to see the crack running down across the threads on the plug housing. It is repairable, by removing the material that contains the crack and the plug threads, and replacing it with weld material with a TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welder.

09.01.2022 Lets make some noise!

07.01.2022 Restoration almost complete. Ready to paint.

07.01.2022 Short motor just about done.

07.01.2022 Note to apprentices and casual mechanics the world over: When you pull a head off of a six cylinder engine and there are three pistons at the top, its not a great sign...

06.01.2022 We will be closed tomorrow. Ill be available via phone for most of the day for inquiries, but any deliveries for the shop can be left around near the side door between T&T and myself. Apologies for any inconvenienced caused. BRCH.

06.01.2022 The manufacture date on the bearings give dates around November ‘85. It’s quite likely that these bearings have been in service for the last 35+ years. The copper colour on the bearings isn’t a bad sign. They show an even wear pattern with no deep scoring - it’s a good sign of a happy service life. The white metal overlay (missing) is only a few thousands of an inch thick and so wears away quite quickly.

05.01.2022 Happy New Year to all of our customers and followers. 2020 will see big changes with Border Rivers Cylinder Heads. Over the Christmas period, Stan has been busy pondering and planning.... What was your big 2019 accomplishment? What will be your big 2020 goal? This is a sneak peak for us:

05.01.2022 And completed. It goes to show that just about anything can be restored when comparing this image to the first one. A big thanks to Kev for the picture and the paint job.

04.01.2022 Famous Home-built Engines Twin 1JZ V12 Don Groff said in an interview once, that his idea was to take the two engines and make them into a 5.0-liter V12 with a target of 800 horsepower. Using a pair of 1JZ engines from a MKIII Supra for the job, he got to work. So without doing much in the way of investigation or measurement, Groff picked up twin 1JZ engines sourced from a couple of early-90s Toyota Supras, he cut the blocks just above the oil pan gasket surface, and scratch...-built a new crankcase out of TIG-welded 3/4-inch steel. With the head bolt pattern being symmetrical, you can flip the head end-for-end. There are 13 oil drain-back holes in the block. He used those to bolt the cylinders to the crankcase. Creating the cylinder banks 120 degrees apart, he mounted the right-side cylinder head backwards and modified it so the cam gears stayed at the front of the engine. He laid out a new crankshaft, each rod journal now carrying two connecting rods instead of normal one. With a standard 1JZ making around 300 hp stock, roughly 18 lbs of boost from the twin turbos easily meet the power goal. Weird goal or not, this thing sure turned out to be beautiful. See more

04.01.2022 Busy day today. Amongst a lot of other work, a Toyota 3F bearings replaced and head reconditioned.

03.01.2022 Further notes on cylinder head repair: Precombustion chambers on Toyota 2H cylinder heads is .000 (even with the head) to .004 above. The WRONG. way to address this is with an angle grinder... The patterns on this example prove that it doesnt work all that well.

02.01.2022 One of the changes at Border Rivers Cylinder Heads this year will be a widening of available services. Pictured here in the shop being readied for service is a 1996 Berco RTM225A crankshaft grinder.

02.01.2022 Pretty sure that two-piece pistons arent a thing, especially for a 1HZ...
