25.01.2022 As veterinary services are deemed essential by the SA government, the clinic is open normal hours during this lockdown period. We are open for unwell or injured animals. We can also do call outs for unwell or injured large animals. Please give us a call to make an appointment or arrange a visit on (08) 87521478. If you are unsure if your animal needs to be seen, please give us a call to check. All elective procedures such as desexings and vaccinations will need to be postpon...ed. The clinic will call you to cancel and you will need to call us to reschedule after the lockdown. *Please note - the Kaniva consultation day today is going ahead as per normal. **Also please note - if you are coming into the clinic, you will need to wear a face mask (if you have one) and please use the hand sanitiser at the front door. Also if you are feeling unwell, please do not come to the clinic. We are limiting the amount of customers into the clinic. Please call us to let us know when you arrive and also if you are picking up medications so we can get them ready for when you arrive. We can meet you at your vehicle. As far as we know, the Cross Border Travel Directive #18 (3 November 2020) has not changed. If you have an ET pass, you are still able to come to the Bordertown clinic for essential goods and services. Things are constantly changing so we will keep you updated as best we can. Please don’t hesitate to give us a call if you have any questions. Hope you and your pet(s) stay safe during this SA lockdown period See more

18.01.2022 Summer is almost here and so are our scaly ‘friends’! If you see your pet with a snake - CALL IMMEDIATELY AND GET TO THE CLINIC AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!... Signs of a snake bite usually develop between 30 minutes to 2 hours after being bitten but it can take as long as 24 hours! It is much better to bring your pet to the clinic immediately than wait for signs to develop. Within half an hour of being bitten, we can perform a quick blood test to check if your pet has been bitten. If your pet has been lucky enough to not get bitten or to have a ‘dry bite’ then we might just recommend monitoring. But it is much better to be safe than sorry! The following signs make us concerned of snake bite: Dogs - Vomiting, weakness, wobbliness, big pupils, difficulty breathing, salivation - Sometimes after a bite, dogs can collapse or they may vomit or have diarrhoea AND then get up and appear completely normal. This unfortunately is a sign that your dog has had a lethal dose of venom and they will start to deteriorate rapidly Cats - Weakness, wobbliness (especially in their back end), difficulty breathing, big pupils If your pet has been bitten, we will place your pet on fluids and administer anti venom. Anti venom gives your pet the best chance of survival. Depending on how paralysed they have become we may also need to assist them with their breathing. Recovery from a snake bite after anti venom can take hours to days. Please take care of yourself around snakes. DO NOT handle the snake or bring the snake to the clinic. If you have any concerns regarding human snake bite, please call 000 for emergency advice. STAY SAFE THIS SUMMER Let’s hope everyone’s reaction to snakes are as quick as Georgie’s Maggie when she met a sleepy lizard!

16.01.2022 Next up is...Kyh Role: Veterinary Nurse/Receptionist How long have you been working at the Vet Clinic? About 6 years Do you have any pets? A cat named Baby, dogs named Max, Missy, Ava & Jess. A 17hh Clydesdale named Heath. We also have a few pet lambs. Our favourite is named Andy What are some of your hobbies outside of work? I like to cook, garden, scrapbook, take millions of photos, spend time with friends, read and love watching TV! ... Favourite food? Asian food of any description closely followed by Indian Dream holiday destination? Africa to see where Wild at Heart was produced and be amongst all their beautiful wildlife Prefer dogs or cats? I prefer cats in general, but there are a handful of dogs that I have met over my time as a vet nurse that could change my mind very easily. In the clinic situation, I prefer to handle dogs as cats tend to do more damage to you if they are scared. I have been bitten, scratched and hissed at from cats a lot more than I have been growled at or bitten by a dog. I had one cheeky dog decide to wee on my back while I was kneeling down talking to the owner. They were horrified!! As a child, what was your dream job? Veterinarian , mounted police officer , vet nurse or zoo keeper What would you sing at Karaoke night? Most definitely not unless everyone was deaf!! If you could choose to do anything for a day, what would it be? I would love to be a zoo keeper for the day, that would be such an interesting job! What would you rather do - ride a bike, ride a horse, or drive a car? Definitely ride my horse What is the favourite thing about your career? I love the variety of being a vet nurse, every day is different and you just keep learning new things. I love nursing a sick animal and being able to send it home healthy. I love watching the happiness on the owners face and often the happiness of the pet when their owner comes through the door to take them home See more

14.01.2022 YAY, SUMMER IS COMING! However, with Summer comes grass seeds! Unfortunately, these can cause nasty problems for our pets! Signs of a grass seed problem depends on where it is. Ears - shaking head, holding head to one side, unsettled, yelping Nose - sneezing a lot. There are very few other reasons why your dog sneezes, so if your dog is sneezing in Summer it is HIGHLY likely they have a grass seed up their nose... Feet - swelling usually between the toes, discharge from a wound, excessive licking Eyes - holding eye shut, pawing at eye, swelling and discharge from the eye Tonsils/mouth - coughing/gagging Grass seeds have a habit of migrating so the sooner we can remove them, the better! WAYS TO PREVENT GRASS SEEDS - Regular checks - checking ears, between toes, armpits, belly and bottom - Regular grooming - a short clip can be helpful - Minimise access to areas with grass seeds such as sticking to paths If you have any concerns that your dog has a grass seed problem, please call us on (08) 87521478 to organise an appointment ASAP

It would really depend on where I am going but I would probably ride a horse or a motorbike! What is the favourite thing about your career? I enjoy meeting new people and a variety of beautiful animals! If I was to pick one thing I love about my job it would probably be the challenge of intensive care of critical patients, watching them get back to good health and learning from their case and being able to use that knowledge with other patients. It’s a very versatile career and I learn new things every day which is so cool - there’s never a dull moment! See more
